Title: Last nite at Gardners
Post by: bug-chazer on Aug 28, 2015, 01:46 PM
Finally had a nice nite to troll at dusk , no boats except for other fisherman and nice temps. Lots of little bass (4 inch on shad rap) little blue gills (1 smaller than shad rap) perch. No walters. Been a hard year from the boat for them this year , but was a fun nite. :clapping:

once the water reachs 70 or under the walleye should start to feed again in shallow water

Dont have to go too deep to hit below 70 right now.

surface water temps need to fall to these temps. The high temps do not hold good oxygen levels, fish will hold at or below the thermal cline.we need a few very windy&Stormy  days to churn things up.The weather we are having this week is not going to help

Ok, I'm in...I grew up in East Hampton and worked in Colchester and Salem for a few years while in college. Now I live in Glastonbury. I still consider Gardner "close enough" to me. I'm in for trying walleye fishing this Fall, once things start to cool. I need to see what it's all about. Looking forward to it. Any beginner tackle/bait/lure tips for me, having never targeted eyes before?

As an aside, I've had a decent year so far, fishing Keeney Cove mostly. Best larry was 4 lbs., and I finally got a few pike out of there a couple weeks ago. The first pike was tiny, but the second was 27" and the third was a little over 30". The 4 lber. and all the pike were caught on a Bucher Slopmaster spinnerbait. I've also had a couple good days at Mashapaug with a tube and a Roboworm on a drop-shot and we had a blast with topwater smallies on the CT river up above King's Island back on Memorial Day. There isn't much better than having a 3 lb. river smallie crush my Sammy 100 as soon as it hits the water.

Bring on the cooler temps and lots and lots of teeth!

The teeth are active year round.  I released a 25 lber in mass fro my buddy a few weeks back, all about knowing where the like to be in relation the the thermocline.  We've been drop shotting runty pike like the size you mention every weekend on deep weed lines.

Found out I have private access to a house and dock on sacandaga so Ill be spending some time there chasing all things teeth this fall.

Very, very nice fish. Beautiful color. I've been working to find their warm water locales this Summer. Not much success yet, but I'll figure it out a little bit at a time. The spot I found them in at Keeney was pretty interesting...the main cove water was 82, but I found a small stream trickling in which the water temp was 68. It felt like ice water compared to the rest of the cove.

15 to 30 feet is where I've been marking many of them.

Lures or live/dead bait?

All artificials.  More verticle presentation than anything else.  If it helps search on youtube for bondi jigging the detroit river...thats what we do.  I mark them on the deep weed edge and then jig...granted I apparently am more effective in getting my friends trophy fish, than getting them myself.  (that was the second 25 pounder ive landed for someone there.  One ice and then that open water one)

This has to be the hottest start of Sept that I can remember. The boat ran great, new helix 7 Si worked flawlessly,86 degree water temps the thermalcline was at 30',the soft shell crabs were great
