Deep Perch
« on: Dec 31, 2007, 11:49 AM »
OK, lets say I'm on Seneca Lake in my boat and I've found the Perch in 30 to 60ft o/w,
now the question is what kind of rig or how do I get a lure down to these fish?
Any ideas you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Tight Lines,
Steve

I use a drop shot rig with a half to three quarter oz weight on the bottom.  I use two hooks rigged with a palomar knot above the hook making the dropshot.when the sinker gets to the bottom you want it to stick enough to keep the line tight.  The fish will bite most of the time when bait is stationary and if the sinker doesnt' stick then its hard to tell the difference of moving or still, and therefore what a bite is.  Ony time I will go less than half oz, is in shallower water like 20 and less or in weeds.

Rueben is right.  Drop shot is the way to go.  The only other thing I would comment on is THINK SMALL!  Small hook, as light a line as possible (i was using 6 lb. test this past weekend), as light a weight as you can get away with while still making contact with bottom, small baits, and also consider flourocargon leader.  In these clear Fingerlakes it makes a difference.   While actually targeting smallmouth this past weekend with this same set-up, we would occasionally get them jumbos...  We used tiny plastic minnow and grub immitations.  Fathead minnows should work as well.   Just be ready to experiment with an assortment when they get picky.

I was using both 4 lb line (my normal for open water perch) and 10 lb line( with 5 inch minnows for pike) and got perch on both.. including the 5 inch minnows
if that perch looks kinda smaller than over 15 inches, keep in mind I am 6-3 and 230 lbs and have 2 coats on....

Didn't think I'd get that much of a response from this post, but I did.
Thanks for the great advise and the great pics of the big bad girls.  :o

Nice looking fish folks.... :)

I think perch is one of the best tasting freshwater fish there is...:D

I am interested in reading more posts on this thread, before I add anything to it

At the risk of seeming to "hijack this thread. Which I don't intend to do. I'm going to answer pines question...
pine,
A drop shot rig is as easy as tying a hook on a fishing line, but leaving a long "tag" end to the knot & instead of cutting the tag end off, you attach a weight(sinker) to the tag end. The length of the tag end(dropshot end) depends on how high you want the hook & bait to be, above your weight.  I use them sometimes when river fishing , but I tie a rubber band to a loop in the bottom, so that if I get a fish on & the shot/sinker hangs up on a snag. I keep the fish & lose just the weight. That should about cover the basics. If you want more info about dropshot rigs . I'd suggest you Post the question as a Topic in Gen. Chat , or Fishin Equipt. forums & you'll get a lot more tips..

Back to the deep perch...

Keep the post & pics coming please.. I'd like to see more also.
;)
