Lake Chateaugay Fishing
« on: Aug 17, 2019, 09:08 AM »
Hello, I am heading up to Lake Chateugay next week with family and was wondering if anyone could offer hints for fishing the Upper Lake Chateugay. Will have a 16' boat with no riggers. Staying on NW end. Thanks in advance!

I've fished Upper Chateaugay a few times mainly for bass. Hit rocky shorelines for smallmouth. The south end of the lake is weed choked and has largemouth and pike. It has some huge pike...if you can find them. You could jig (1/2-1 oz. jig with 4-5 inch swim tail)the deeper part of the lake for lakers. The narrows is also decent for bass.

Thanks CNY! Would love to get into some bigger pike for sure. Lakers are fun as well. Thanks again for the response.

You are welcome! Pike should be on deepest weeds you can find and on an "inside bend". Here is a link to some ny lakes. Not the most accurate but better than DEC maps. Long deep points adjacent to weeds, too.

Spent 5 days on Chateaugay. Beautiful lake.   Fished  almost every day between Moffit Island and our lodge.  Bunch of bass, no trout. One smallish pike. Want to go back in the spring and fall when the fish are more active. Thanks CNY for the tips.

You are welcome. Mid July into Sept. can be tough in the ADK lakes. The bite is almost entirely dawn and dusk (especially for smallmouth). Plus, they have a tendency to tune in on a couple baits or presentations. If you don't have or do the right thing, they are tight lipped. Largemouth are more cooperative but very tight to cover. I'm not a big Pike fisherman but summer is more miss than hit. Definitely better fishing spring and fall. Did the bass have any size?
