I wonder how good the fishery would be if the state opened a season??

I understand the risks as they are slow to re-populate, but it's VERY popular in some sates, and they seem to manage OK.

since they are on the endangered species list, I think it would be up to the feds as to whether a fishery would ever be opened up.

The way to go about that, would be to have a limited number licensed of sturgeon guides who specialized in fishing for them and make it mandatory that a guide is used. this insures that proper handling of fish takes place and protects against over fishing. it also generates economic activity around a local resource.
