new-be to downrigging
« on: Apr 24, 2020, 12:41 PM »
Hi hope all are safe. I'm very new to downrigging , I have alot
to learn . I have a cannon uni stx -10 manual. 6lb ball. My question is if I want
to get a rapala f9 floating jerkbait down to 25 feet going 1 to
1.5 mph  keeping the bait back 50 to 75 feet from the ball. do I
just put the ball down 25 feet and the bait will follow.
The reason for 50 to 75 feet back is not to spook the fish.
I really need help thanks and be safe

yes

pretty much

With only a 6# ball you will get some blowback of it causing it to ride higher than actually set.
But at only 25' down it won't be tons.
Especially only at 1-1.5 mph

good luck

Seems like you may be over doing it with the down rigger if you're fishing 25'. You could achieve the same with a 3-way swivel and 3-5 oz. on a drop...then experiment with leader length till you get dialed in on the fish. Try that out for size. The options are abundant to play with. Good luck man.

We use our downriggers in 5-10 FOW for spring browns and coho to set light spoons just down 5' below the surface.
This way we only fight the fish.
Super control.
If you already have the riggers they work far better than most other presentations.
But yes, if you don't have the riggers, drop weights are a simple and inexpensive alternative to get things down.

Yep, agreed Mac. I don't even like fishing leadcore anymore. Takes the fight and the fun out of the fish. I have caught fish this year using my downrigger to target 3 feet below the surface.
