Memorial day in Indy
« on: May 24, 2020, 10:37 AM »
Have you ever been to the race?

It's been a few years for me.  I've watched the 500 from the real snake pit, inside turn 1
to the tower terrace.  Not this year. This year is different.  16th street and Georgetown is empty.

I live in Indy and, though on the opposite side of town, we can usually hear the cars at the track.
Not this year.  No fly over, no invocation, no balloon release, no National Anthem, no "America",
no "Back Home Again in Indiana" and no soul shaking rendition of Taps... In those moments time
stands still.  I miss them as much as I miss the thunder of 32 engines, (OK, one usually doesn't turn
over right away), answering "The Call", the muffled roar of the parade and pace laps that becomes a screaming for release at the drop of the green flag...

All that remains today is the fact that is Memorial Day, a time to remember, pure and simple.
That's enough for me.

Be Safe,

rivereddy
