Hit the backyard stream (That’s what i call it anyway) this morning. It’s a bonafide “crick” this time of year. Caught a ton of Rockies and a few smallmouth with the fly rod. Water was cool at 7:00am, air was cool, fish were hungry.
I’ve been wet wading small creeks for most of my 70 years. Still just as much fun now as its always been. With the heat and humidity coming our way, its a perfect respite from the boat in the baking sun.
Go get your feet wet!

Oh my thats great... Back in the day Sprout "Crick" in Lagrange NY with gramps drowding worms with a 15 foot bamboo cane pole.... No reel.... He could drift a garden worm and catch trout like no other..
It was always a crick not a creek...

I'm just getting back into small mouth fishing myself after a 30+ year hiatus.
(We don't have 'em where I live now, so I have to travel a bit to pursue them).
I do have a terminological question for you New Yorkers?
Exactly how big does a stream have to be to be a "creek"?
We don't have them here in Massachusetts, where a stream is either a "brook" (small) or "river" (large), with nothing in between.
I get the impression that a "creek" is somewhere in between, but exactly how big does a "brook" have to be before it becomes a "creek" or a "creek" becomes a river.
Sort of the same sort of question as to when a "hill" gets to be a "mountain."

Interesting question as I get myself ready to visit what i consider a stream this morning.
Here’s the way I’ve always thought of it.
Creeks are largely made up of runoff from rainfall in one way or another and feed into larger streams.
Streams are formed by creeks feeding the same flow , are larger and eventually Flow into rivers.
Rivers collect what the streams and creeks send them and flow into lakes.
“Crick” is an antique term for the little creek down the road.....most used by antiques like me.

Not disagreeing, just sayin'...here I have Skaneateles Creek and Nine Mile Creek near me. They both are outlets of lakes, Skaneateles and Otisco. So I feel a creek is larger than a stream, crick or brook...I used to live next to Carpenters Brook (we used to call it a crick) and there are little spring fed creeks, cricks/tributaries running into that all along the way from the Carpenters Brook Hatchery to the Seneca River in Jacks Reef...so I guess it's a local VERNACULAR...ie: language...depending on your location and the local vernacular.

Sounds reasonable.
The stream/creek I fish a lot is Ganargua Creek on the books. It originates somewhere south towards Bristol and empties into the canal in Palmyra. It then exits the canal via an overflow near Port Gibson and continues round and round till it empties back into the canal again near Lyons.
It has many lives.

I found a sweet hole yesterday maybe 6'x6' deep hole I could see about 20 trout swimming around one I would say was around 18-24 inches didn't have a rod with me but I will be back

This particular hole was not but I do know some good holes on "Mud" crick or Ganargua same thing

Heading over to the “crick”in a bit. Gonna pestered some Carp for a while. Went yesterday but didn’t get to my spot till near noon. Water is low and clear. Carp were lazily feeding in the shadows. I was forced to be in the bright sunlight. Tossed in some “strawberry Jello corn” and a couple good sized fish moved right in on it. Before I could get into position to make a cast they spooked and didn’t return.
I should be in the shadows this morning. Hard to fool them when conditions are in their favor.

Big slug. The net is about 20’ wide. Two zeroed in on the strawberry corn within 5 minutes. It took a corn fly and headed for the next county. Good thing I took the 10 wt. Waited another hour or so but nothing more.
Sure gets your heart pumping.

Nice fish; it's surprising what size fish you will find in 2 ft. of water!

Watching those submarines approaching is really nerve wracking.
Did I tie a good knot....am I ready....? Not like search and surprise. The anticipation is a killer..

Went over to the “crick” this morning thinking I was gonna test some new flies.
Ha! Came up to near record levels yesterday and running mud brown. It’ll be a while till it settles down. Lots more rain forecasted for tomorrow.
Might have to drag the boat out.

Sure did! We got pounded down this way. Creeks are up, I saw a lot of trash washed into Conesus, and the road crew was busy on W. Lake Rd. cleaning up where culverts and driveways washed out and over the road.

I said the heck with it and hooked up the boat. Perch fishing tomorrow. Got a nice ribeye in the fridge. Maybe some surf and turf.
