Pike on the FLY??
« on: Mar 23, 2004, 12:46 PM »
Has anyone tired to get one on the fly???  I'll be trying for the first time this w/e  and i'm just wandering if anyone has been catching any in the shallow bays with the fly rod. I got a bunch of flies from Cabelas; deceivers, bunny strips, tarpon flies, some wierd looking poppers/gliders.  It's hard enough to get 'em to hit a shinner or a dead bait right now,  so i'm a bit sceptical.  Anone got any tips out there??                                              J

Go down to the fly fishing board.  There is a thread there about pike fishing.

In-Fisherman just did a big write-up on black bunny strips and other leach imitators for pike.  Worth a read.

i tie 12in streamers for muskie. we troll them over deep holes in the st.john river . any bright colors work. esp. firetiger or perch. large smelt or chub imitations work well too. a 6in version could be casted with a 8wt. rod. find a local fly tyer and ask him to tie you some or pm me and ill set you up.

I have been fly fishing for pike for years in the little fished yukon tribs and it's a blast. I use a 9 weight rod cuz there is a good chance of hooking up with a 50 incher. If there isn't any 50 inchers in your area a 8 wieght would work great. My best flies are long bunny bugs, sea ducers and zonkers.
I've never been to heaven, but i have fished  in  Alaska.

a local guy just caught a 20lber  4 days ago trolling. thats a good fish for the river but the lakes got some significantly bigger than that. muskie fishing is coming into its own in this area since theyve been illegally stocked here 25yrs ago. we are just learning how to get them. if anyone can describe thier patterns to me please pm me . it would be greatly appreciated.
