Both spinnerbaits and in line spinners are great for pike and may be the best overall lure for them. When working shallow weedy areas, I pick spinnerbaits. When fish are a little more finicky, I choose the inlines. The #15 panther martins in gold or silver, and #5 Aglias or Black furies work well for pike. Small musky bucktails are good too.
I have generally had better luck on spinnerbaits for pike, but if you aren't fishing weed areas, you cannot go wrong with a big inline spinner.
When the water is off color, I pick the spinnerbait because it pumps out more vibration and flash. And in the evenings for pike, crawling a buzzbait along the surface is lethal.

I prefer spinnerbaits hands down, for one of the reasons Mdaddy pointed out:
Vibration!
They work especially well in the fall, on the deep side of receding weed-beds.
I have caught more open-water pike on spinnerbaits than all other lures combined.

Very good point guys, I too have good luck with the off-set spinners for pike. I have caught a few pike in the evening tossing a bucktail jig and an clip on off-set spinner. >*)}}}><
