Title: Kinzua, Seneca Nation
Post by: catfisher on Feb 23, 2017, 12:13 PM
:(  FYI cost of rez fishing permit now $60. Marshalls are active, but nice. Caught some northerns, a walleye, some suckers. Comradery with other nearby fishermen was awesome.

Just a footnote to your post. If over 65 years of age the Seneca Nations fishing permit is much less. I paid $15 a few years ago. Think they may have had an increase, but is cheaper for seniors. Also NYS rules DO NOT apply to Nations fishing regulations such as length of walleyes and season.

Stickhick86 the best I can answer your question going by the Seneca Nations handbook guide lines is: Disabled person (50%or more is $10.00. I believe they have had a raise in license fees since I got this guidelines in 2015. As for Nation rules and NYS they are not the same an example is Walleye limit 4 no more then one walleye 21".  A phone number for Seneca Nation Indian Marshall Department for Cattaraugus County is 716- 532-3040. Strongly advise to find proper regulations on the Nation as you can have a very bad day.

Got the permit. $ 25 for minor ( 12-17). $ 10 if 50% disabled. Also have a 3 day $ 25. Walleye, Muskie, Bass, Crappie, Catfish all close March 8, Open May 1.  Northern, Bass also 15 inches You will get new rules & regs. when you buy permit. READ THE RULES. You Can lose all your equipment or sit in a cell until somebody shows up with $500 bail. Depends on your offense.

Incorrect (to a degree)
First off.... season dates (PAY ATTENTION!)  Walleye pike crappie perch season dates are 1st of may till MARCH 8TH (changed this year) creel limit is 4 of 15" and only one person angler 21" and over(as stated above)
The biggest change besides the price hike is the season dates
Fished there last week... did pretty well... 4 outing yielded 21 legal eyes.. 2 over 21" a musky and a 6lb largemouth

No problem gotagetm... glad to help out and clarify.. I pretty much live on that lake... I love the reservation waters.. from the lake all the way up the river into allegany where it returns to NYS waters... the allegany River system is undeniably a phenomenal fishery.. anybody to say otherwise doesn't know how to fish! Lol
If you have any other questions reach out and I'll help you or anyone else that I can!!

Fishinjohn  Where are you from?
What area did you fish? Off shore or boat? I know everything will change by May 1st. I have a camp on West Perimeter Rd. I don't expect you to give up your favorite honey hole. Just looking for a little help. Been fishing that water since before the dam was built.

I live about 30 min from the lake.. I just got a campsite on water this year over towards bone run. One day I fished off Bank and the other days I took my small River boat (big boat still put up). Fished from wing d**n up past highbanks.
The biggest advice I can give you for that lake is this... DO NOT get stuck on one spot! And do not DO NOT be afraid to try "out of the box tactics"
Every year is different down there last year I found a good school of fish all the way into June  (from may 1st) in 25-30fow. I wasn't able to capitalize on a shallow bite last year (some guys did) but I was able to get my limit ALMOST every time out

She's been on the rise for a while now and getting closer and closer to summer pool.. about another 10 ft and she'll be there. I'm guessing she'll be up there before April 1st.

Anyone see the picture or story of the big female walleye shocked in the Rez. I seen the pictures it is true the Nations' Walleye hatchery has her. They will strip the eggs and turn her loose again in the Rez. Oh how big was she just a half pound under NYS record 16.2 lbs. and 35" long. The hatchery is on the Red House road and is open to the public for all the non dis-believers to see the pictures and story. No April Fools joke! The real deal.

A New York State DEC biologist explained that the Ohio River system walleye have different DNA than Great Lakes walleye and they result in larger growth length. If you want a state record walleye fish there before the spawn when the fish are full of eggs to weigh more. Also Chautauqua Lake has Ohio strain walleyes. The last three record walleyes are from Kinzua in the winter and spring.

I think this was true for both NY & PA Jim.
Maybe not last 3, but at one point Kinzua shared the state records for both states.
Of course it was 2 fish, one being caught in NY and the other in PA.

As long as we don't get any torrential downpours lasting hours, she should clear up some.. main lake should be decent for sure by then...
As of right now, may 1st isn't looking promising weather wise.. Calling for heavy thunderstorms with a 60% chance... hope the pattern changes between now and then!!!!

Sounds like a successful outing to me. Glad you made it off the water before the line of storms blew through. Can't wait to fish Kinzua. Last time I fished it the Rez license was under $20. Finally broke down and purchased one a few weeks ago.  Thanks for the report and keep them coming...especially the water level and colarity. I'm sure today's storms won't help.

Finally made it out there this morning. Fished off the Highbanks area in 8-15 FOW. Landed 4 short walleye, 2 perch, and got into some nice crappie right before I had to pack it up. All were caught on orange jigs tipped with piece of night crawler.  What a nice body of water Kinzua is. I'm hoping to get out at least a few times this year. So much to explore.

It'll take you a lifetime to figure it out  (fished it 35+ years and I'm still learning)
Weather pending I'll be down Saturday evening aft work to enjoy the first night of the year at the camp

Yup.
Fished it the first time back in 77.
The raising and lowering every year moves things, including the fish.
But it's a beautiful world down there.
Even if not catching fish.

Not too many bodies of water to fish  that the opportunity to catch a MONSTER of ALMOST ANY  species of fish that one might want to catch and to hear Turkey's gobbling and then to see bald eagles soaring and diving to catch fish all in the same day.. The zoo is undoubtedly a great lake to fish.. one day you can smack the eyes hard and 10 hours later get skunked.
But I love that place!!!!

I started fishing there back in 77 as well. Limit catches of 10 walleyes were easy to get at that time just bottom bouncing with a worm harness.  Lost a lot of tackle on logs and rocks.  Caught my fish of a lifetime there in 78, a 21 lb northern.  Almost 40 years later I still haven't got anything close to that monster.  It is a beautiful place to be and fish.

Thanks fishinjohn for the update. The waters will be getting busy with traffic as school is getting out this week. Seen a picture of a nice Walleye caught in the Olean Creek in Sunday's Times Herald paper. It was 29" long and weighted 7.5lbs. caught by a Olean High School junior. He released the fish which I thought was very good on a trophy fish like that.  Good luck to you fishing.

Ok.. I'll give a full report in today's outing just to keep some info going on this thread.... today wasn't a horrible day but it was definitely a day of grinding for a few fish.. I ended up boating 3 legal eyes (all over 16" and all under 19") and a 26" pike).. 1 short eye and 4 white (silver) bass..  each legal eye was in different depths, so no way to really say what depth the fish were at.. one was in 17 fow one was in 24fow and one was in 7 fow (that came at high hot sun 130pm) and pike was caught in 22fow.. all caught in different spots! Windy and hot but great to be out!

Went out yesterday 4-8:30PM. It was pretty calm so I spent most of the time trolling harnesses and cranks. Very slow for me...just one short walleye and a half dozen white perch. Spent a good amount of time retying and straightening hooks. Lots of hangups down there.

Is that the norm for Kinzua? Just wondering if the majority of walleye move to the deeper PA waters in the summer. I've only fished it in the spring. Thanks,

The PA bite definitely gets better in summer months as some of the fish migrate back to those waters after the spawn. The northern end hold good numbers all year long, but the southern end is definitely worth a visit once the waters warm up and fish move south

Super good 4 hours on the water
