Nice 20" Brown
-
When/Where'd ya get him?
-
Hard to tell from the pics, but looks to me like it could also be a male landlocked salmon. ???
Either way nice fish!
-
nice fish no matter what it is
-
It is a very nice fish. The coloration does look alot like a salmon, but that square tail looks alot more like a brown tail then a salmon. Salmon usually have slightly forked tails. Either way it's a beautiful fish, doesn't really matter one way or the other what it is.
-
Thanks I believe That the tail makes it look more like a brown, and the Lake I caught it in has a good population of Brown Trout. Got him at Highland Lake in february
-
nice trout
-
Not positive, but I'm leaning towards landlocked salmon. Firstly, the maxillae(large bony piece behind jaw) lines up with the back of the eye, rather than extend past like a brown's would; hard to tell exactly with the way the fish is held in the picture. Mature salmon have flat tales and male browms usually have more color. I notice the adipose fin has been clipped, do they stock the lake with any brood stocks? Nice fish.
-
Yeah it might be a brood fish
-
I caught a similar fish last year in Maxwell creek. Girlfriends son helped.

Nice fish guys! The biologist in me can't help but dispense some info...That hook jaw is called a kipe. It's a male characteristic.

You mean KYPE. ;D
-
You mean KYPE. ;D
I guess the spelling depends on what side of the river your from
-
Actually a kipe is fish related, it is a basket for catching fish, also slang for stealing. 8)

You mean KYPE. ;D
You are correct, but it was originally spelled 'kipe'. The modern accepted spelling is due to a mispelling propogated by Francis Day an icthyologist in the 1800's. He is also the same guy who propogated the now accepted misspelling of char for the original 'charr' see the journal Copeia.

The original spelling was kip, meaning hook, and was used by the Scotch to name the lower jaws of male salmon. A related old English term is kipper, referring to spawning male salmon. My ancestry is Scottish, known for their drinking and fighting. ;D
