Title: Water Wolf's adventures - Pike patrol <*})))>{
Post by: Water Wolf on Jun 11, 2007, 02:45 PM
My partners and I did some fishing this Sunday {June 10th}.

We started our adventure in the afternoon, from 3:30pm until 6:30pm.

There was a fair amount of fishing going on at the little lake and it seemed that everyone was catching. Most of the fishing was from shore for both pike and walleye.

My partners and I had a boat so we set up and started trolling. Within 3 min I had a pike on and pike off.
The fishing action was fair, with a fish biting every roughly every 20 min. :)

At the end of the day I landed 5 pike, partner #1 landed 1 and partner number two landed one and lost 3.

Here is the catch. :)
My 5 are on the string, my partners are above them.

It's interesting how much pike from the same lake can vary in coloration, both on the body and on the fins. No two are exactly alike. 8)

I also landed the largest pike of the day. ;D
(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y73/waterwolf101/p2.jpg)

It was 5lbs.

The hot lures today were the smaller Storm wildeyes and single tale Mr.Twisters.

Looks like a good day! Just out of curosity, what are the size limits and catch limits on pike there? Here in most Michigan lakes it's 24" and 2 pike. Here it seems like I either catch one big one or a bunch of 12" to 22 inchers, never had a bunch of good ones in a day. Heck of a job!

Thanks guys. :)

Thanks Kappy, yeah Rocky was an old water wolf himself.
He loved the water was a pretty good game retriever with out hardly any training.
He was also good natured and didn't mind when I put items on him like the glasses.

Pike hound.
Fish limits and possesion lengh can very on some lakes in Sask. but the general angling limit is 6 pike, one of which can not exceed 29.5 inches.

The pike were divided when we got home partner #2 took a few and partner #1 and I are from the same family so we just split the rest amongst our family. Everyone enjoys a fresh feed of fish from time to time. My partners family and my family and I really enjoy the pike more than the other fish. Especially my uncle and Granny. :)

Burbot would be tied with pike forsure. They to are on the top of our favorite eating fish list.
They don't really look it but they are great, just like the cod in fish and chips. In some areas it may be burbot you are eating in the restaurant.

We usually have a family fish fry, the fish are usually done on a pan with some lite butter rolled in flower mixture or shake and bake.
Tasty taters or a baked potato is also added to the plates.
On occasion we barbecue the pike fillets.

I would also like to try deep frying them along with csavage's potatochips and mozzarella cheese dish. 8)

My partner and I went fishing Sat June 16th for most of the afternoon.

We arrived at the lake I have fished at the last couple of times and thought I would try it for a while.

The wild roses are in full bloom right now.
And there are pollinators amongst them.

The lake was like glass.

I fished in that area for about an hour. Fellow anglers from shore and in the boat both said they had not caught a fish all morning, not a good sign so we packed up and headed for a reservoir I have been meaning to try but never have.

This is my destination, Whitesand Reservoir,{thats me on the dock}. :)

There were quite a few anglers out today in this area, both human and bird alike.
These pelicans are done fishing for a while. :)
Loons and king fishers were also about, but too fast for the camera.

In the trees at the top of the hill there is a monument.
Here is the inscription on it.
It is a solemn reminder for everyone to be safe around the water.

My partner and I set up and started fishing.
In two casts my partner had on a junior pike, it went back.
Ten min. later I hooked a pike, this one is a good eater.
My partner and I get nibbles all afternoon from tiny 3 to 6 inch perch and walleye. Our lures were too big for the little nippers.
That reserivor is teaming with tiny fish life, in the fry to fingerling size.
Half an hour before we leave I hook into another pike, here is the results from that area. 8)

There were a lot of shore anglers in that area and it seemed we were doing better than the folks in the boats. We were getting 2 or 3 fish and the boat anglers were comming back with 1 or 2.
I feel they may have been fishing too deep, my partner and I were catching them in 2-3 feet of water and that is were I saw a lot of little fish jumping and boils from larger fish.

We then thought we would explore the reservoir for new fishing locations. I found one, where the river flows into the reservoir.
I decided to try it for 10 min or so.
As I approached I saw what must have been a 3 - 4 lb walleye shoot from the shoreline into deeper water.
At least there is one fish around.;)

As I was fishing I saw a boil close to shore and cast just beyond it, as I went by the spot I had a hit.
This was the culprit.
It was also released.

On that positive note we decided to go for supper. We stopped at Queens Hotel in Sheho, for a nice steak and chicken supper. I would defiantely recommend this place to anyone.  :thumbup_smilie:
Sheho is roughly 45 min or so West of Yorkton.

Sheho is the native word for prairie chicken.

Further down the highway we see some whitetail deer, outstanding in there field.

Along the trip home we find an entire herd of cows had broken out and were walking down the road, they then crossed into the farmers wheat field. ::)

Father's day was a downpore all day long so no fishing that day!  I was hoping to take my uncle fishing to the reservoir.
I took him to Sheho for steak instead. ;D

I hope to return to this new found reservoir again sometime this summer. :w00t:

Title: Re: Water Wolf's adventures - A few fishin trips <*})))>{
Post by: Water Wolf on Jul 05, 2007, 02:06 AM
I have been fishing 3 times since my lasts set of photos.

The first trip was last Wed. June 27th.
My Uncle has only been fishing a few times in his life and he thought he would like to try it again.
We set off for some afternoon fishing and I guided him to the spots where I have been catching. In our first spot I found a hammer handle pike on the second cast, back it went.
We fished throughout the afternoon and in the end the hammer handle pike would be my only action. My uncle, on the other hand, followed my lure choices and casting instructions and landed himself  2 eater pike and a walleye. :)

Pike #1 was 2.8lbs, pike #2 was 3.9lbs and the walleye was 3.4lbs
(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y73/waterwolf101/June27th2.jpg)

Trip 2 was on the 2nd of July. Again my uncle and I fished for the afternoon, but this time I would take him to the Whitesand Reservoir.

It didn't take long before I was into fish.  Schools of yellow perch swam parallel to the shoreline. All I had to do was flip my tiny barbless circle hook and chunk of worm in front of them and wait for the mad scramble and the hit.
I hooked a dozen of them in short order, but the smaller perch were getting to the lure before the big ones{8 - 10"} even had a chance. ::)
This guy was the average for that area.;D
(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y73/waterwolf101/July2nd1.jpg)

As soon as the clouds rolled in, the perch action stopped.  I switched to the pike and walleye gear. All the while my uncle was fishing with his favorite choice of spoon.

Halfway through our afternoon I land a pike. :)

My uncle lands a pickerel rig.

I then land a crayfish.  It grabbed the lure and came along for the ride. It also went back.

As we were almost ready to leave, my uncle lands a walleye.
The pike and walleye were both 2.3lbs.

The 3rd trip was Tuesday July 3rd.
Again my uncle and I are off to the reservoir, but this time we move to the deep waters near the dam area. We fish most of the afternoon with nothing more than a few taps from perch.  Fellow anglers did not fair any better and everyone left fishless.

I snapped a photo of some anglers who had better luck than us.

At around 8:00 pm we packed up and headed for the lake we usually fish at. This proved to be a good choice. We fished this area from 9:00pm to 10:10pm. Soon after arriving I landed and released a junior walleye. My uncle then hooks a junior pike. He then proceeds to catch another walleye and not a bad pike.

Here is my uncle with his 1.5 lb walleye and his 5.6lb pike. 8)

All but one of my uncles fish were landed on spoons.
I caught my fish using storm swimbaits, the G-grub and double tails and worms.

I think my uncle is now hooked on fishing. ;D

My uncle and I went fishing yesterday afternoon/evening {over +27 deg C/+80.6 deg F}.(http://bestsmileys.com/sun/3.gif)  It was a very calm day with only a slight breeze. Fellow anglers joined us off and on during the day and we chatted away while we waited for a bite. There were hits off and on but they were not really ready to feed at that time.

The fishing started off a bit slow in the heat but as the sun dropped lower and lower in the sky the fish turned on.  In the end my uncle landed 10 fish, 2 pike and 8 walleye most of them went back. I landed 1 walleye and two little pike.

This is my walleye, and the big one of the night at 4.3lbs. This chunky walleye was a foot thick. :)

Here my uncle shows the ones that came home with us.

On the left the 3.2 lb walleye and 2.6 lb pike and on the right the 2.1 lb walleye and the 4.3 lber.

The one walleye had a 3 inch pike sticking out it's throat and still it wanted one more mouthful. ::)

All the fish were taken on spoons.

Title: Re: Water Wolf's adventures - Fishin' on Friday the 13th >*})))>{
Post by: Water Wolf on Jul 14, 2007, 03:30 PM
My uncle and I went shore fishing yesterday, Friday the 13th.

It was a nice day with sunny skies and +25 deg C. weather. We fished from 5:30pm until 10:00pm. The only bit of bad luck I encountered in that time was when I lost my new spoon on only the 5th cast. As I cast the the line wound around the tip and "snap" the spoon sailed smoothly into the blue and was gone. :P

I retied another spoon, and in 5 min., I was battling a little walleye roughly a foot long. A quick hi and good bye and it was off. :)

At the end of the day I manged 4 fish (3 walleye & 1 pike) and my uncle caught 3 (2 pike & 1 walleye).

This is the fish that went home with us, note the unusual looking pike that I caught on the right. 8)
The pike on the left was 20 and the walleye was 18 inches. The normal pike was 25 7/8th inches and the unusual pike was 25 3/4 inches.

The group close up
(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y73/waterwolf101/ThedayscatchJulyFridaythe13th.jpg)

Here is a close up of the unusual pike. All of it's fins were a clear yellowish color. The mottled blotches, so common in a normal pike, were absent. It's body was lighter from the pelvic fins back.

This pike had one more supprise for me. As I was filleting the fish I saw something drop out of the fillet.  To my surprise it was a tag / implant transmitter. :o
(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y73/waterwolf101/TaginunusualpikeFridaythe13th.jpg)
I have never heard of fish being tagged in this body of water, but, further West, is a larger lake that has had a pike tagging operation running for a number of years. Perhaps with all the high water this year the pike may have made it's way from the big lake to the smaller spawing lake, and, after the spawn, became turned around and instead of moving West to the big lake it entered the creek that now joins the two.

I am very curious as to why the pike would have such an unusual coloration, could it be due to the implant, the water clarity, or genetics such as albino or silver pike genes? Does anyone have a theory?

This is the second fish I have caught with a tag/implant. The first was this winter while icefishing. It was Feb. 19th/ 2007. Like the other tag, I will send this one to the Sask. Environment field office along with a brief description.
I am still waiting for info. on the first pike.  Hopfully they will send info. on both of them.

All the fish were caught on spoons, the unusual pike was on a Len Thompson 5 of diamonds.

So all & all Friday the 13th was a good day. ! ! ! ;D

That's really an unusual colour for a pike, very yellow!  Until I saw the implant, I wondered if it was a diseased fish or something, but now I'm thinking that maybe the implanted RF tag interfered with it's normal liver function, and caused it to become jaundiced and yellow from non-excreted bile??  I hope Sask. Environment Dep't. comes back to you with an explanation of the tag.

Thanks TGF and Skiff. :)

LOL, your right TGF, I would hate to turn the color of that pike. :w00t:

Interesting theory Skiff, it is an ultrasonic transmitter so it may bother the fish's organs, not really sure. :-\
All the organs did appear normal.

Title: Re: Water Wolf's adventures - Pike patrol <*})))>{
Post by: Water Wolf on Jul 17, 2007, 11:56 AM
That is very possible trapper.
The pike may have been trapped in the smaller creek between the lakes for a time before it made it's way to the lake I caught it in. Those creeks would warm up a lot uncomfortable warm for a pike and may have caused a heat stress color change. It could also be a combination of the heat stress and the stress of the transmitter in it, lots of possibilities with this pike. :)

One bit of info I did learn:
There were only 10 pike with this ultrasonic transmitter implanted in them, and I caught 2 of the 10. One in the lake they were originally tagged last icefishing season, and the other the other day in another lake to the East.
What are the odds of that happening? :o

Thanks mttrout, it was fun. and on Tuesday July 17th we got to try it again. :)

The fishing has been a bit slow lately, it may be due to the intense heat we have been having, the North winds or a combination of them both, but whatever it was the fish are very negative. Even frozen minnows and live earthworms are being rejected. :-\

I had a few halfhearted strikes but that was it, my uncle on the other hand did better, catching these two on a slow rolling spoon. :)

The lake was like glass. I love those types of fishing days/evenings. ;D
It will make a good wallpaper for my computer.

hey maby you should eat that implant and then drive down a major high way and seee what they think..lol    but serisouly they could been monitering the fishes vitales to diffrent water temps or the food they eat or there enviroment conditions reactions...i really dont know  but its a guess b/c thats what they do to wales...
Title: Re: Water Wolf's adventures - Pike patrol <*})))>{
Post by: Water Wolf on Jul 28, 2007, 02:05 PM
Thanks mttrout, perch-man, Big Burk and crappieslayer22. :)

LOL, I don't think I would want to eat that implant but if they were monitoring the fish they would see it leave the lake, move through the bush and travel down the road.
I am not exactly sure how the implants function, but I do know that it is an ultrasonic transmitter and there was a group monitoring the pike's movements from the spawing lake to the main lake. The group wanted to see how long the fish would take to reach the spawing grounds. This spawing lake is a few km's away and I think they said it took the pike anywhere from 3 to 7 days to reach it. The really big egg laden females took the longest.

Speaking of pike, my uncle and I did some fishing yesterday evening.
It was a hot day yesterday with temps in the +30 deg C / 86 F, so the best thing to do on such a hot day is to find a cool shady spot by the lake with the breeze blowing. That's what we did.

On the very first cast my uncle hooks up with a hammer handle pike, I didn't even have my lure on yet.
It went back.

Over the course of the evening we landed 5 more pike and had 7 shake loose just before being netted. Some of the strikes were a mere 5 feet from shore. I had one little pike follow me in 3 times in a row, and each time it would grab the front of the spoon instead of the end. My uncle also landed 2 fish in a row. I was just unhooking the first, placing it in the water, and, "thump", another on. :)
There were no subtle strikes last night they hit it with all they had, and never gave up fighting all the way in with jumps, shakes and dives. The jumps and shakes were what tossed the lures free.

Here are the 4 that came home with us.

I managed to land the big one of the night at 25.5"and 5 lbs ;D.

We left just as the mosquitoes started to come out. :P

On the way home I took a look at my cottage to see if the water level has dropped. The good news is that it has a bit, the new channel seems to be working. When they get the two channels going it should be really good. :thumbup_smilie:

There was large dead white sucker under the steps of the deck.
It must have blew in with the waves, and from the looks of it, was there for some time. ::)

We also checked out the newly dug channel and found a new bridge over it now.
The # 310 highway is operational again. 8)

The ripples you see on the waters surface are rain drops.

Silver / orange, chartruce yellow and firetiger are good colors to.

It's been a while since I have had some time to fish, so yesterday I did some shore fishing for a few hours in the afternoon until evening.

It was a bit windy with some waves but generally not too bad, just enough to stir up the bottom and floating algae causing less light in the water.
The fishing was not to bad, I caught 1 fish every hour.
At the end of the day I caught and released 1 walleye and 3 pike. :)

I start the afternoon with this walleye.
You can't really see it in this photo, but along with the white spot on the base of the walleye's tail, it also had a white spot on the top, kind of neat. 8)

This is the first pike of the day.

Followed by the big one of the day at 5 lbs.

This poor pike was in rough shape, it's tail fin was split in several places and it had small part of it's snout split from a fish hook, the wound looked to be an old one.

This pike ended the day for me.

The fish where hitting really hard yesterday. You didn't have to wonder if it was a weed or a fish this time.

They were hitting a variety of lures, the walleye and the first pike went for a large spoon, the big pike for a dead herring under a float and the last pike a double tail grub.

This is the sight I saw as I left the lake.

Thanks Big Burk. :)

I went fishing yesterday afternoon to the Whitesand reservoir.
It was a nice day, water was like glass and mild weather but unfortunately something put the fish in a finicky mood.

I shore fished most of the afternoon with only a tiny 8 inch pike landed on my second cast. :D
I had lots of little nips and short strikes from tiny pike and perch.  I wish I would have had few stinger hooks with me. :P
The anglers in the boats where not catching any better - only little perch to show for their afternoons efforts.
Some of the shore anglers caught perch, most looked to be around the 5 - 8 inch mark.
One lucky angler, beside me, caught a good perch 12 - 13 inches long.

If I had to rate the whitesand reservoir right now it would be pike poor, walleye  poor and perch fair.

In the end I did get one keeper pike. :)

I also caught a new pickerel rig.

On the way home I spotted a large cow moose in a slough, she was a big girl. :o
I tried to get a photo of her but she quickly disappeared into the bush.

It's been a while since I have been fishing, so on the long weekend, I went for 3 days.

Day 1. Sunday Oct. 7th.
My partners and I went fishing for part of the afternoon.
We launch the boat and load up.

The day started out nice, with calm water and blue skys.

An hour into the fishing I land my first fish of the day on a spoon. :)
This pike was 23.7 inches and 3.7lbs.

Right after I landed the fish the sun went behind the clouds and it got cold and windy.

Besides 3 nibbles the pike was the only fish of the day. ::)

After we left the lake we though we would swing by Fishing Lake and see how the clean up and construction at the lake was going. There is a crew building berms along all of the beaches around Fishing Lake. The idea is to create a seperation between the flooded cabins and the lake. The flooded cabins will be pumped out, and demolished if need be.
Here is a shot of one of the berms.
This is a multi million dollar task, they hope to be done most of the major construction by ice up.

Day 2. Thanksgiving.
I decided to try the Whitesand Reservoir, so in the afternoon I did some shorefishing.
Along the way to the lake I saw a few moose tracks on the grid road, I was hoping to see the owner.

I set up along the shore.  I was the only one out there that day. :)

About an hour into my fishing I hook this hammer handle pike on a spoon.
This little nipper was 12 inches long, it had a nasty slice in it's back, perhaps another fish grabbed it. :pinch:

In the late afternoon, I saw a very large black object swimming from one shore to the other, a regular lake monster. :o
(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y73/waterwolf101/Thanksgivingmoose1.jpg)
The lake monster turned out to be a big moose. It was a very strong swimmer and moved at the speed of a trolling motor. :w00t:
It clambered up the steep bank and rested in the trees, as soon as it saw me it slowly walked into the deep bush. 8)

This was quite the day for wildlife, all afternoon flocks of ducks, geese and swans fed and rested in the water just beond my casting distance, they were not worried at all.
Towards evening 5 coyotes let rip with there songs.  They carred on for 5 min or so, shortly afterwards one came down to the shore across from me and picked up what I think was a dead duck.

Just before I left I caught another pike, this one was bigger, and a good eating size.  This one fell for me flipping a tube jig. :azn:

It was 24.5 inches long and 4.2 lbs. It was missing a pelvic fin, looks like it never devloped. :-\
(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y73/waterwolf101/Thanksgivingfishning3.jpg)

On the way out I spot a ruffed grouse near the road way. I snap a photo before it disappears into the willows. :)

Day 3. Oct. 9th.
This was a bonus trip, I had some business in Melville that day. As always I had a rod and tackle box with me and decided to try the Melville Reservoir for and hour.

Beside the North East corner of the Reservoir is a mounment to a young out door enthusist who passed away. His family dedcated a fishing dock in his memory.

I have never fished this area before and was unsure what fish were there, so I decided to try smaller lures as most fish should go for them.  I could see alot of fish jumping all around me, were there trout present? ???

I had a few nibbles throughout the hour but just at the end I got a solid strike.  I set the hook and was into something. :-\
It turned out to be a nice chunky 3 lb walleye on a little banana bait. 8)
I snap a quick photo of it and send it on it's way. :)

All in all it was an interesting couple of days, I saw lots of country and wildlife and found a few fish along the way, at least I warded off the Skunk.

I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksging and Columbus Day.(http://bestsmileys.com/thanksgiving/2.gif)

Hi all,

I went fishing for 2 hours yesterday afternoon.
It was sunny, but very windy and chilly and too windy for the small boat so I decided to shore fishing instead.

About 10 min into the fishing I hook this pike. :)

The fish seem to be active but not striking aggressively. I receive a few light hits but nothing major, 20 min before I quit for the day another strike and another pike.

A final shot of the 2 pike.;D
(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y73/waterwolf101/Oct214.jpg)
They were 4 and 2 lbs and both fell for a spoon.

Thanks teacherd. :)

I hear you Pike_Hunter.
I did alot of shore fishing last year and found the spoons were the best lure to really get out to the deeper waters, and I caught a fair number with them too.
I hope it's the same this year.

Can't wait for the 2008 season opener on May 3rd. ;D

I hope there is some open water by then, will defiantly be nip and tuck. :-\
