Ya throw any thing big at the bank, early spring in the spaun is always fun. Might get a pike once in a while.  Its just like pulling a big log in. The pike LOL ow ya.

When I use to do a lot of river fishing I would use a very simple streamer made out of dark red and brown deer tail tampered at the eye with about 15 strans of hair.  Used them on a # 6 or 8 long shank hook.  It looked like a night crawler going down stream.  Caught a many eyes on it.  An ole timer taught me how to fish it when I first started to fly fish.  He never use anything but a fly rod for all his fishing.

I have tried throwing leech streamers near the bank in the spring and have done alright, never had a great day though.
