8hp evinrude max rpm's
« on: Jul 26, 2009, 09:02 AM »
I have a 1987 evinrude 8hp. I don't have an owners manual for it. I want to know what the W.O.T. rpm's should be. I can only assume somewhere around 4500 but would like to know for sure.
Thanks for any replies!!

They're like a Haynes book for cars, but cover multiple model years for each of the major makers.  Mine is the Johnson / Evinrude Outboard 1971-89 1 - 2 cylinder book.  It covers our old 1974 4HP Evinrude as well as the 1980 4.5 HP I just picked up, as well as any other 1.5HP to 60HP engine made during those years.  They run about $30-35.

is it pushing the boat in your pic? i doubt its actually running 5500 give or take 200 rpms.. my duck boat motor which was a 5 hp would only run 4 k and my chrystler runs 6 k... they are both stated for 5500..

Yes it is pushing the boat in my pic.
The reason for trying to find out what rpm's should be is because mine is only running 3800. If it was supposed to run at 4000 I would leave it alone. But when it should be 5500 I may try a lower pitch prop to help it gain more rpm's although I still can't see it getting near 5000.
I have read it is not good to run an outboard slower or faster than its intended rpm's. But I will bet mine has ran its entire life at way slower rpm's.

2 strokes dont like to be bogged or reved to high.. 3000 sounds kinda low.. ever try shifting the wieght in the boat? for me the battery up front will make it go from 5 to 12  with just me.

Well I got my new prop and I am totally amazed.
My rpm's went from 3800 to 5700. I never thought a 2" lower pitch would change it that much. I also gained 3mph. Now I can cruise at a blistering 13 mph .

Why would shifting the weight gain rpms?

most small boats with one person will ride with the bow up and create large ammounts of drag pushing the bow down and on plane will create less drag which allows the motor to run faster..
