Title: Rental boat sunk at Gate 8
Post by: lowaccord66 on Apr 21, 2021, 01:24 PM
Details are hard to come by but my understanding is 2 rental boats were taking on water and 1 is at the bottom of the res.  Anyone else hear about this?

No, I haven't but I would have thought they would have enough foam under the seats that they would not sink to the bottom...

Apparently two boats were "messing around" in the center if the lake at gate 8 yesterday and one took on water and sank causing the renters from the one to join the other boat.  Apparently the info on this is part of some FB group for Quabbin that's private.  I don't do the FB but am not surprised.  I've seen some unqualified boaters goofing around out there in years past.

Would gasoline from the gas tank and outboard be a issue in a reservoir that is a drinking water supply?

I see a boat and motor was recovered in 2014 that had been sitting on the bottom since 1984.  It was discovered when some anglers snagged their anchor into it in 130 feet of water.

Doesn't it seem odd there wasn't any record of a boat sinking previously?

I guess that depends on ones perspective.  The volume of potential gas leaking and oil is very small from a proportional standpoint.  To that end they allow recreational use there which involved hundreds of boat motors running in a public water supply...all with thru prop exhausts (which if you've run in a bucket you know that water gets real nasty) so I have a feeling it'll be a wash.

Don't use FB so I can't access the link.

You're right but there are chemicals out there that are harmful in parts per billion which is quite small. Lead is harmful in only 15 PPB and PFAS is harmful in parts per trillion.

I would imagine that the people who want to ban fishing at the Quabbin will use this to their advantage.

Right!   It always made me cringe that no boating license is required in MA.  Even just requiring a cheezy boating course would help.  I little education goes a long way.

I saw 2 rentals messing around last Sunday. they were racing each other and jumping each other's wakes like jet skies. this garbage keeps up and rentals will be a thing of the past.

I watched a Japanese family hit a submerged boulder in area 3 with a rental. Really hit it hard with the prop. Apparently the gate guy didn't notice and they didn't say anything. I wonder how that prop faired? I would't want to be the next person to use the boat.

Might be some anti fishing group trying to have fishing totally shut down. It's a great way to do it.

Years ago (30?) I remember renting a boat with my dad and we clocked one of the old stone walls that extend into the water HARD.
We limped back to dock and played it off like nothing had happened. Still have some lingering guilt over that.

Would seem like horseplay would be met with some very stern words or loss of privileges as law enforcement is all over that reservoir isn't it? Seemed like overkill to me.

Do the rental boats have new motors? Last time I was there, years ago, the motors didn't go fast enough to make waves.

It happens.  I think the number one rental mistake (and I was guilty of it) is hitting the lower unit on shoals.  Way back when I was a big googan...I dont think navionics was a thing and the first few trips it seemed unavoidable.

Yes a bunch of the older units were swapped with newer Honda units that were pretty good!

Very true but I've been known to snicker a little when I see an expensive powerboat hit a shoal at high speed because they were inexperienced. I wouldn't snicker at them if some of them weren't so rude to anglers in smaller boats. (Not on Quabbin of course).

Pat and I hit one doing 35 last summer on Champlain...lucky we didn't fly out of the boat.

At least you're not one of those ***holes that are rude to anglers, run over their lines, act like they own the lake, etc. That's the ones I snicker at. I had a lake resident that would strafe me if I anchored within 100 yards of his pier. I got his boat number etc. but CO's said they needed a name to go with the face and boat numbers. Huh? For some reason they didn't want to touch him. My guess a judge or something.

There are a couple of marl bottom shoals on a lake I used to fish with prop tracks all over them. If they had some boulders on it there would be some serious damage. If I was a jerk I'd start hauling out some rock every time I fished it.  ;D  But I'm not.

If you place it on the inside, water pressure will help push it out into your boat. If you place it on the outside, water pressure will hold it in place. Just be sure the handle is flipped up. You don't want it below the bottom of the boat where it could get bumped open.

Some boats arr designed for it to be on the inside . Mine is round on the inside but squared off on the outside.  It won't seal if you try to install from outside.

I always put mine on the inside. in the case you take on water you can get on plane (if possible) and pull the plug to drain the water out. have had to do this a few times in my commercial striper fishing days.

Ditto. Mine goes on the inside. It's never come out in 30 years.
