What Pound Test?

I just got a 5' berkley rod and was wondering what pound test to use for crappie and panfish? I usually fish from a boat and the crappies i'm after are usually around the 10" range. I icefish with 2 lb test but don't think i need to go that small...or do I?

i find that 4 or 6 is good, 2 seems too light and if youre in the weeds its basically end of story.

5' is pretty short for panfish, but I'd use 4 lb. Watch your knots and terminal tackle connections and you'll be OK!

I prefer 4 but have been using 6 because I tend to troll a little for crappie. holds up little better for weeds.

I use 4lb as well, this year I bought the BPS crappie line in 4lb and it has worked well...I also agree with the above comment about rod size, go longer for gill fishing, you will love the feel of the fight on a 7-9 foot rod

Unless they are in heavy cover, #4 is my choice. I prefer Trilene
XT
5' is a bit short for a rod.

i try to go as small as i can get with my line because i never keep anything. i am a catch and release fisherman so i only test my skills fighting fish with the smallest line possible.i do use different line for differant species. in general though, for the most part i use four pound test and will move up to six if the fish are much bigger.

Luv the 4lb stren magnathin out in the open but if I'm in the wood or pads I prefer the 6lb. 5' rod I'd use for jiggin or slips over the edge of the boat or for casting up tight in the sticks and trees. I fish some stuff you gotta have 8lb to get em out and you gotta be able to throw on a dinner plate. Enjoy your new toy.

4# stren works well, but I'll use 6# if I'm in really weedy or woody cover.
