Post by: AD on Sep 07, 2004, 10:40 PM
I worked up in alaska this summer outside of Homer Alaska in the Tutka bay fish hatchery, a hatchery run by Cook Inlet Aquaculture association (CIAA).   I had plenty of time to do some fishing and thought I would share the pictures.

Here is a bunch (15) nice pink salmon that have not gotten their spawning colors yet

I had a good summer working in the hatchery.  Fidhing was amazing.   We caught tons of halibut (well technically they are called chickens under 100 pounds) ranging from 1 to 78 pounds, cod from 1 to about 20 pounds and lots of sole, Irish lords and many other bottom dwelling species.   I caught King, Red, silver, and pink salmon and dolly Varden too.

The halibut didn't taste too bad, either.  We had some for dinner Saturday night.  That, and I've got a piece of one of his reds in the fridge - his dad (Bensmen) smoked it.

Some would say that it is light too long up in Alaska way too long durign the summer, I say hey, its fine with me that way I could work a 10 hour day and still have plenty of sunlight to go fishing  ;D     I think I went fishing for the first full month I was there after work before I missed a day of fishing, didnt miss a whoel lot of days of fishing this summer.    Worked hard, bu had a lot of fun after work with fishing.    A summer well spent full of great memories.  Couldnt rightfully even say how many fish I caught, all I know is that there were so many that my arm was often sore from a good night of fishing.
Didnt get too many pictures, or any for that matter, of the black bears that were around up there, the tiems I saw them up close I was either running in the opposite dircetion, keeping an eye on them, holding the .338 or .280, or had forgotten my camera.
Met soem really amazing people up there that run some lodges for guests, a nd cheap for up there too, at $250 a night per person.    It is really a place that everyone should get to once in their life.
Out of Homer their are so many different fishing charters to go out on it would eb hard to choose, they range from 1-7 days out on the boat, the 7 day charters are amazing, I met a guy who had jsut gotten off of one adn had brought back off of it 700, yes seven hundred pounds of fish.    Those of coarse cost a bit more but would be well worth it.    The halibut charters you could usually expect to at leaste catch a 50 pounder with chances of bigger ones that that being pretty good, I saw them this summer come back with some pretty huge fish.
When we fished for halibut we could not go out nearly as far as the charters did.   But we could manage to catch a bunch of little ones (chickens) anyways.    A good night (3 hours) of fishing could produce lots of halibut and a few (1-3) in the 20 to 40 pound range.    We fished anywhere from 50-150 feet deep but found the best luck around 100 feet deep.   We also caught soem hefty cod while fishing for the halibut, a couple in the 20 pound range, and if you got into a school of them, two cod on your line at once was not unusual.
Dolly Varden in the stream near us ranged from 6 inches to a nice 21 incher that I landed, with a few more even bigger than that.    They were the main target earlier on as they were up in the stream feeding on the natural pink salmon hatch, the fry adn dead eggs.   They are a blast on light tackle.
Pinks were everywhere later on, we could have caught hundreds a night if we had stayed out fishign that late.    They were nailing pixie spoons one after the next, the spoon would barely hit the water if we casted into a school of them.    They fight really well, especially if they were not colored up adn ready for spawning yet.   Lots of fun on light and even medium tackle, a big one (8-10 pounds) took quite a while to land on a medium weight ugly stick lined with 8 pound test.
Reds and silver, we had to breeak out the heavey gear for.    The silvers are by far the best fighting salmon I have ever had the pleasure of hooking into.    They will make your drag scream and your pole bend to the limits, absolutly a blast to catch.    Reds wernt bad to catch either, although we had to snag them, that was legal, because they are filter feeders and would not bite.     We had to go to different areas to catch these (both the reds and silvers) because they did not run up the stream next to the hatchery.   We wanted to catch more Reds but near the end one of our fellow co-workers decided to run over a rock with our boat going full tilt, so that put an end to out lower unit on that boat adn an end to our longer trips away fishing.
Although I found a few reds in the stream next to the hatchery adn found that after about 30 casts in front of their noses you could get them angry enough to grab hold of your lure.   I landed a nice one on my medium ugly stick with the 8 pound test and that took next to forever.
If anyone is looking for a few good books to read I could really suggest a few.   here are three that come off the top of my head,   Alaskan Viking, The Alaskan Wolfman, adn North of the Sun, all three are real great books about alaska and peoples experience up there, with thte later two being stories of the earlier pioneer/trappers in alaska.   Well worth the reading.
Im working on trying to upload a bunch more pictured, but photobucket is not cooperating with my slow internet right now, but hopefully Ill get some more posted soon.

Hey, that photo where you need the shave looks familiar to me.  Is that the pool in Homer down toward the end of the peninsula(or is it a spit) ????  Was just there a two years ago, can't wait to get back!!!!  Am I right???

Post by: AD on Sep 14, 2004, 04:06 PM
Hookset, yup that would be the spit pool,  ;D, those silvers in their were raised as fry by us, felt like harvesting cattle to me for some funny reason.   Yep you were right, they have it stocked for different runs, kind, silver, red, and pink runs.    But those would be my organizations silver's that we hatched out and raised till they were big enough to release.

Yay, got a few more photo's up to share.

This one is of the float system of 12 40 foot by 40 foot pends and 2 sheds that I worked on most of the time

We got a real kick out of this one, nobody bothered to tell the captain of the fish tender that you can only get into adn out of the lagoon over a 14 foot tide, well here is the result.  (good thing it was a flat bottomed tender).....    I think he is a little bit stuck    :P

How deep were you fishing for the halibut?  I took a charter out of Seward and we were in 500 ft of water.  The reels had big bike grips for reel handles, 2 or 3 lbs of bait, 5 or 10 lbs of lead and down it goes.  What a workout.

Post by: AD on Sep 22, 2004, 10:41 PM
Deepest I ever fished this summer was 150 feet deep (a 20 ounce sinker did the job to keep my 60 pound test down there with 1 herring chopped in half, one half on each hook), we usually had the best of luck right around 100, A lot of the charters that go out of Homer go out a long ways in a day to a hump that comes up from deep water to about 100 feet deep and fish on top of that.

I have lots of scenery pictures too Ill get around to posting a few soom,

Decided to change this over to some open water fishing pic's, seeing as I do a bit of that too when Im not in alaska.    ;)       I dont have many of me, most of them are older regular pictures,   but I have a few from my dad last summer while I was in alaska, he still did some fishing around here.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv50%2Fdeerslayer07%2FP4210003.jpg&hash=f257b19b7a0f5eae5bb3630d9767faaf)
A batch of stocked brookies, they dont over winter well in the spot we fish for them,

Also In between my two summers in AK, we went on a charter onto Ontario, Chucker picked up a 25 lb king, I got a 12 lb steelhead and bensmen and my brother and Chuckers friend also landed some fish.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv50%2Fdeerslayer07%2FFishingTrip2003.jpg&hash=e78d15042768c2b98b43dd35b3edabf9)

A few years back we were down at Martha's Vineyard visiting an Aunt and she surprised us with a fishing charter.       We each landed a 20 lb Striped bass.    Along with a bunch of blue fish.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv50%2Fdeerslayer07%2FMVFISH.bmp&hash=90c8979e38401659b53e55a110596a47)

I was going to post another pic or two, but I dont think my mom or aunt would like that (they are pics of a 39.5 inch  and 16.5 lb pike that my aunt landed and a 39 inch 15.5 lb pike that my mother landed up in Remingy Quebec  .

More pics to come, I can't wait for trout season, gonna get some good fishing in, but still have some more ice fishing to do before that comes around.

Yeah we caught some really odd fish.   That was part of the fun, sure we didn't get many halibut of decent size, but we always would catch a bunch of fish and lots of them.    Always had a few to bring home to eat if we wanted.     My boss actually caught an octopus when he was jigging for halibut.

Got out for a few hours today,  Started off at Little York but it was pretty windy and the canoe was at a trolling speed.   Headed back to the ramp and off to a sorta secret little pond that I know holds 13-15 inch perch.     Didn't catch on of the big ones, but the few small perch we caught had some blue coloration in them,  really beautiful fish.

I really like this pond, don't think it gets deeper then 10 feet but its a nice lake to fish.    You would swear it is in the Adirondacks or alaska,   but it isn't.   It is hidden away in central New York.

Just some scenery shots

Looks like the ponds are all un-frozen, the streams are coming down in level.    Gonna be some great trout fishing coming up.    I see a lot of limits coming up and the smoker smoking some trout.

Im gonna try to bring the camera out whenever I head out fishing.     So more pictures to come.

Headed out to that pond that I posted the pictures of above tonight for some bullhead/crappie action.
This has really become my favorite pond quickly.
Started off with a little bobber and spikes action, picked up some small crappies, 5 inches maybe, and a bunch of shiners.     It was fun.  And I can say at 22 years of age this is the first time I have ever really caught crappies intentionally.   Most of the other times it was sunfish fishing and caught a few.     I plan on targeting them a little more later on.    But I was more determined to get into the bull's.   So after it got too dark to see a normal bobber (I forgot the lighted ones) I switched over to split shot and night crawlers.
In a matter of an hour and a half I landed 8 and kept 6,   Could have kept catching them, they were bitting really aggressively and fairly often, but I got enough for dinner tomorrow night so I headed back home.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv50%2Fdeerslayer07%2FDSCF1070.jpg&hash=216bfaf3b7f1e08d2e3bc90a8f27038c)
That is what I brought home tonight.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv50%2Fdeerslayer07%2FDSCF1074.jpg&hash=858cbcf46ff8fadbdb00e5f59e92dca1)
The biggest was 13 inches

Got out today for a bit of trout fishing.
Me and Bensmen picked up 2 a piece, I got 2 brows and he got a Brookie and a brown.
Biggest was 13 inches
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv50%2Fdeerslayer07%2Fbutternuttbrown-13inch.jpg&hash=2f11f535fb620cd34a596055db860487)

We had to keep the brook (it swallowed the hook)

I post a pic of the poles we use for trout in a bit.    Ill jsut say when a creek chyb bites it feels liek a northern pike hitting a darevevil sometimes  ;D.      We basicly use super-ultra-lites with 4lb test.     .

Thanks, I tend to fish with Ultra-lites most of the time.    It is usually a blast fishing with them.

Hey, thanks camo_fish I am heading out with the family tonight after the Bulls and maybe a few crappies.    Ill try to remember my camera tonight.   Not sure if we are going to keep any, but I want to try to smoke a few so maybe a few will get bucketed, heard they are ok that way, and a few bulls combined with the trout we got should be enough to fill the smoker.

Got out from 6:30 to 9:30 tonight, got 6 or 7 bulls, a nice perch  (10 inches) a decent bluegill, and a big shiner.     Let them all go.   The bulls were not as big as the othernight.    Was occampanied by my mom an d dad.    Just had another beautiful night out under the stars.     I love fishing in this spot.    And we were even accompanied by Ben, our faithfull family bassett hound, he was just happy to get out with us and not be left behind.

Only a few things missing, Chucker and my brother and it would have been the best night out this year.

No crappies tonight though, there is always tomorrow night  ;D      Thinking about seeing if my neighbor wants to head out.

Still a good time I bet... nothing compares to quality time on the water with family, a family that fishes together stays together, I grew up fishin with my father and there is nobody on the planet I would rather fish with. Aside from that, getting youngsters into the game is our future, cant go wrong with that  8)

No worries Jim... Going to camp tomorrow.  This time we get to use indoor plumbing, too!

Might see if we can actually get the big rowboat out so I can try the Opti2.  Even so, there might be bullhead out front tomorrow night.  8)

Went out tonight again for a little bullhead action.
Started off with a light pole and a bobber to see if I could find some decent crappies or perch.
I didn't get anything decent, but with spikes tonight I caught, a bunch of shiners, a ton of perch (mostly dinks, one was around 10 inches or so) a small crappie, a bass and a pickerel.   All on spikes.     Couldn't believe a pickerel grabbed the spikes.     One of the Shiners probably went almost 12 inches, it was a beast, bigger then any bull I caught tonight.     I missed that ponds grand slam by not catching a sunfish.

here is a large shiner.

It is a great sorta secret little pond that I have grown to liek so far this year.    Saw some nice bass jumping.   I cant wait for bass/pike season.   Ill be out there pulling buzz baits.

Problem with this pond is it weeds up pretty well, deepest hole is maybe 10 ft.   and it has a fair amount of logs.   Lost 3 or 4 bulls in them tonight.
But I managed a few.    when they decide they want to take the worm they inhale it totally

I dont catch a whole lot in that pond bullhead wise, I know there are places where I can catch more.   But there is something neat about being the only one fishing the lake at night, with almost no houses around.     Headed back in around 10 or so when the canister on my lantern died.     3 nights of fishing was enough for that one.    Bite had died off so I didnt bother putting on the other canister.

I need a few more so Ill head back out tomorrow for them.

Got out for a few more hours, just to catch 3 more to make it 6 for dinner sometime.    Two for each of us is a good amount for the size I've been getting.
Tonight it was attack of hte angry beaver though.   I fish there pretty often as of latly adn never have had this beaver out in front of me.   It was almost pacing back and forth out a ways in front of me a ways and slappin its tail every once in a while.    It wasnt too happy I was there I guess.
Caught a bunch of the bulls, they were bitting pretty well, but lacking in size.    No great size but I kept the three I needed.

Yep it would be called catching and not fishing if we caught fish everytime out.   I just enjoy being able to get out.
The pond with the brookies is a small put and take pond that gets stocked a few times a year.    The trout dont seem to winter over too well, but there is the occasional holdover.    But last year or the year before someone dumped some rudd and bass in there and that has not helped the pond out either.    The regular baitfish in there have decreased and numbers and sometimes you cant get your bait down to the trout cause the rudd get so out of controll.    But it is still fun to fish.

The pond with the brookies is a small put and take pond that gets stocked a few times a year.

Are they 3N brookies? Also known as triploid? That's what they stock here......they hit the eggs with high pressure......throws one chromosome out of whack and they don't produce eggs or sperm. Basically it turns them off in the spawning time of year and they grow bigger.......you do the hatchery thing I'm sure you know about it.

No they arnt triploid, They are stocked in some streams in hopes of starting a better population and one of browns in stead of brook Trout.   Whirling disease really affects and kill s off the brookies, where browns carry the disease but it doesnt really affect them.

Got out for the bulls again tonight with the expectations of doign well with this warm weather adn the front moving in.   Well it was exactly the opposite.   No bullheads at all tonight.   Me and bensmen were both there and a few nibbles but no real takers.

Just got a bunch of panfish before the sun-set.

lol....   Sunfish....     Nice thing about them not having a length limit is we put a few in out pond behind out house that we put in.   The pond is about 250 gallons.   And dont worry these panfish will be well fed.

Gave it a shot for a few hours tonight
Lost one heck of a Bullhead right at shore.   A beauty   had to be around at leaste 18 inches, that is a downfall of using an UL for them, you are bound to loose a few, but you can see them hit better.
Managed to land a few though and brought home one more.    A real fat 11 incher.

Did get a few panfish before sundown.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv50%2Fdeerslayer07%2FDSCF1186.jpg&hash=3dc5f9ea58ee45b59c96bd77c15d8be9)

Here is one of the perch that have a bluish tint in its skin, but it didnt show up too well in the picture.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv50%2Fdeerslayer07%2FDSCF1183.jpg&hash=8e11c3548c0bb1eb21285a5760188e80)

The full moon made the worm an easy find for perch, so I had to weed through a ton of perch.  Must have just caught 30 or 40.    I should have kept some.   A lot were 8-10 inches long.

Had a good time though, I was fooling around flipping rocks near shore and found a madtom,  Ill find out tomorrow if it is a tad-pole one or the other kind.

Thanks all.    We get them out of a small pond that gets stocked a couple times every year.    Over the years we have figured out how to catch them pretty well out of their, and you have just got to love the taste of brookies that size.    I actually got a nice 2lb Brown out of their a year or two ago that had to be a winter over trout.     Its produced fish after fish for us for a bunch of years, and is a blast to watch all the families with younger kids catch their first trout or one of their first.

Thanks, Not much new to say.    Thinking about heading back out for another batch of brookies, but 10 in the fridge is more than enough unless we put them in the smoker.    And these brookies are hungry, hen they take the bait they absolutly swallow it, so C&R really isnt an option there.   If I go there are usually people there who are more than willing to take a few trout from me so that is always an option.
At leaste heading out for a walk in a bit.   Ifugre we will probably put in the poles, whether or not we plan on fishing.
I am also heading out next month on the 20th to eventually end up in MT for a month to visit my gf and try to find work out there, so that should be lots of pictures to be updating if I have internet, and if not their will be a load when I come back.   And yes I am going to bring my fishing poles with me :).

Thanks,   yeah we have found a place where we can hit them pretty well, and have found, and tampered with the bait that we use to get the right scent and the right presentation.    We have also found the right places in that pond to fish.

Got out for a few today and got into them again   :D   Came back with our limit

More nice brookies. Is the lake you're catching those fish out of have clean water? You've eaten a lot of fish lately and hopefully there isn't a mercury warning or anything in that lake.

Its not a lake at all actually, its a pond,, a pretty small pond.    This pond has no natural trout in it as there is no spawning structure.   I should have shown better in a picture, the trout have raceway wear and tare on their fins.     The state stocks them in there in rather large numbers, but they adapt pretty well and can be awfully tricky to catch sometimes.    No mercury warnings in that pond, seeing as I have gone and seen where they were grown, a fush hatchery.

I've fished that pond with them before.  We typically use good ol' garden hackle on small tru-turns under wee bobbers, or small silver Kastmasters tipped with something smelly.

Yeah and if you do not expect to get anything larger than 2 or 3 pounds go with ultralites they show and feel the hits a lot better, especially when the bites are real light and the fish are skiddish..    Too often do I see people over rigged, or rigged to heavy for these brookies, and any other small trout.    Also don't be afraid to try under a bobber and right on bottom.
I'd like to tell you what we use for bait but its a family secret recipe.

Got out for the Brookies this afternoon and dad kicked my butt again.     But we ended up with our limit of 10.    Bensmen landed two 11 inchers.
Went out last weekend for some pike but it was pretty rough out.   Didnt catch any pike but it was nice to hang with the family.

Also saw a decent snapping turtle and "snapped" a few pictures.

Yeah I think I'm going to toss them in the brine and then we will have warm smoked bookies for diner tomorrow night.

Oh I forgot to mention I also managed to hook a dog the other day.
There was a guy walking 3 dogs not on a leash and I was baiting my hook up when the dog comes flying by, made it over my line but not the 7 fool HT super-ultralight and the line followed he pole.   Sure enough *snap* went the line and the dog ran off with my hook embedded into it.    Before I could even say anything the owner and the dogs were off into the woods.     Needless to say I was a little peeved, but just thankfull that snap wasn't from my brand new fishing pole, but I did loose one of my few true-turn hooks I have left.    Tied on a new hook and went back at the brookies though.
Just sort of irritating, there are 4 guys standing on shore fishing and the dogs are wading into the water and splashing around, sure doesn't help the fishing either, especially when they were hitting so light.      We would not have caught nearly as many trout if we went using low vis 4lb test, and super-ultralights.
For anyone that fishes for smaller fish off bottom, or just is a fan of seeing how light of a pole they really make for softwater, these are the poles to use,    Check them out, HT makes then in 6 and 7 foot lengths that I know of.
I really want to get out to Otisco adn land one keeper Tiger before I head out in 2 weeks.   I tried all winter adn came close but no keepers, a few real nice bass, and even a brown out of the north end but no keeper Tigers.     Even lent my gaff out to a guy so he could land his 15 pounder.
Oh well if not Ill be in Montanna with acess to a boat adn close to FT peck reservoir, and from the pics Icetroll posted I know their are some monster lakers pike and walleye in there.     Will take some research but Ill figure something out.

But the good news is Im gonna go after some Bullhead tonight.   Hope that rain holds off and the winds keeps calm.      Might try for some crappie too.   We will see.     Hoping to have some pictures to post  ;D

Got out for the bullhead tonight, not a single one.   I or I couldn't get through to them at least, after it got dark I was still picking up perch of bottom, put on a bigger gob of worm and got bigger perch.  Should have kept them, I caught about a dozen 8-10 inchers.
Before dark I was slamming the perch/sunfish/shiners off a bobber and spikes.    Literally as soon as the bait sank straight down I would have a fish   think I caught between 50-100 panfish tonight all under 8 inches.    It was crazy.    I never have caught fish that fast for that long.     As soon as the bite started it went dead.     Thats when I switched to bottom.
A good night out though, a huge midge hatch mixed in with a few crane flies and a surprisingly low amount of mosquitoes
Snapped a few pics while I was out though.

Well got out for my last time in New York State for a while.   Im heading off to Montanna for a while, not sure for how long though.
Me and Bensmen nailed the trout, with Browns, brooks, and bows being landed.    We brought home a good solid limit of 5 browns, 4 bows and 1 brook.     I landed 3 browns quick on 3 consecutive casts then the bite died, Bensmen went wandering down the shore adn found the school and we cleaned up.     Gotta love stocked ponds for some nonstop action.
Biggest brown was a solid 15 incher.

I will be trying to upload a picture of a 27.5 in walleye tha twould be in the lead in the tourney but it was caught on a setline so it understandingly doesnt count,    also have some baitfish pictures, that I cant put a name to them so I will be looking for their official name.      Been catching a lot of those baitfish anywhere from 5 inches to 12+ they sort of lok like a shad, they might be but I dunno.

I think that the baitfish I am catching are goldeye, Ill post a pic Im uploading it right now.    Does anybody know if they are good bait for channel cats?
Have not gotten a darn thing on the lines in a few days.     The ground is dry so I cant tell if someone has been fiddling with them, I doubt it but Ive got a way ill be checking that out.
Im gonna try and get the walleye picture off of my laptop onto this computer later tonight.
I am really not sure how else to catch the cats, I dont have any real access to a boat right now so Im stuck fishing this limited space of shoreline.    Oh well its still fun to fiddel around.

either goldeye or mooneye...same sh*t different bucket.  They are different but i cant really tell em apart there so similar.  ive used goldeye and had great success on the red in manitoba.   Might be different there but id say cut em up!

Yes that is a goldeye...the anal fin starts ahead of the dorsal fin...the reverse is true of a mooneye.

They are an excellent bait for catfish as they are natural prey for them around here - cut them into steaks and bait away...they tend to work better if you can keep the guts hooked in with the steak...don't be afraid to use the head either.  If you get them on the bigger side, you might want to try smoking them...a local delicacy.

Thats what I thought, thanks,
Seems that the bite is a tad slow as of latly, I fish a beautiful hole too that looks like it should hold cats.   Ive been fishing the drop off, the hole, and the back of the hole, only have gotten one cat out of it, the other cat came from fast current.
I put out some of the goldeye so we will see what happens.      I have had some of it out for a few days too and nothing yet.     Best luck has been off of cow liver so far.

If you don't mind me asking, how big is this hole? I would imagine you would have caught several by now if they're in  there, but maybe its a real big pool?

AD, if there are numbers of cats present in the hole, they should let you know pretty quickly.  I would not sit on a hole for more than an hour unless you are catching multilple cats...usually i only give a hole 20 minutes.

Yeah guys its a tiny whole but the only one I can reach from shore in the stretch of river I have permission to fish.   The whole is real tiny Ill post a pic from the next time I go down.     If I had a boat things would be different but I can only fish this short section for now (getting permission for a section that looks a lot better hopefully)
I suppose it would not be technically considered a whole, its a deeper section but its just behind a current break.   It is a spot that anybody in a boat would just pass up and so would I if I could but I cant.
Here in Montana I am allowed 6 setlines out at once, each setline can have 6 hooks off of them.    I bait them up toss them out and check them twice a day.     It isn't really fishing and I know that, but it has given us a little bit of fresh fish so that is nice.     I also cannot by rules and probably wouldn't anyways enter any fish I catch off of them into the tourney (I have a walleye that I caught off the lines that would be leading).
Dint think I have caught anything off of them since the 20th or so though.      :-\
I did get out fishing for a bit today at some pond that was formed from a dammed coolly, it has pike panfish and evidently carp in it.    Didn't get any pike or panfish or carp.   If I was given time I would have put out a carp pole for sure and had some fun (this pond is infested with carp, and some big ones too)   But we were wanting to get back to the ranch where I am staying cause there is a lot of work that needs doing.
But for the cats right now I have what we believe is some cow and mule deer liver, and some goldeye, and maybe a few leftover rocky mountain oysters       I am having some problem with bait steelers, not sure on the size of them but I am going to figure that out soon, I have been using both circle and regular hooks to see if there is a difference and no difference has shown.
I think the real reason why I'm not getting more fish is just its a bad spot to fish.

Probably a turtle.  I am constantly getting hits and small runs, but  miss a lot of hook sets.  Then it never fails a minute or so later you see a big tutle head pop up.  I have managed to hook into two snapping turtles, that is fight.

That very well could be I hadn't thought about turtles, the current seems a bit strong, but then again they are strong swimmers.
My other thoughts were maybe a mudpuppies?     Sometimes they like to eat bait.     And the other possibility is other people, but I'm 90% certain nobody has bothered my lines, but it is still hard to believe that I have had no fish in this long.       Oh well gives me something to ponder over and fiddle around with on the slow days.

If I go back to that pond I sure as heck will.     I was just hoping to get one of those toothy critters that I remember so well from my past.      But we might be heading out to FT. Peck later this week so maybe Ill find one there.

AD BigRed's right on the money. That is crazy that you got the goldeye on a crank :o I target them with a tiny hook a split shot anywhere from 18-24" under a small float tipped with a small piece of crawler then steak them up and use an inline or three way rig for big cats check out the my tourney entry cat It was  caught it on fresh cut goldeye. :)

I cant seem to catch them on a little bober hook slpilshot and worm,    They will be surfacing all around my bobber but wont touch the nite crawler.   I have tried dpths of 6 inches to two feet deep set for depth off of the bobber and still nothing.     Wishin I had my fly rod here in MT I bet I could catch a lot that way.    But I am not sure how to catch the goldeye effectivly enough to keep the lines baoted up.
If I had my way I wouldnt be fishing this section but its the only spot Ive got permission to fish off of from shore, and with no boat my options are severly limited.    If per chance I do get out in a boat on the river going is still tough without a depthfinder to find the holes.    I have been reading up on your posts and bigred's and feel I could find some cats, maybe not monsters but a few more at leaste, if I could find the holes.
Plus I have found out that somebody is infact tampering with my set lines, or at leaste has once or twice.

I would buy a couple of those big bear traps, once they walk around your area and try to mess with your lines, or steal your fish, they will have a big steel jaw around their ankles, they will probably think twice next time.

I thought about it, considered it.   I was thinking more of a spare, jsut to let them know.  But then I got to thinking if it is the Fish and Wildlife service and I catch one in a trap somehow I do not think it would make them very happy, unhappy law officers make very unhappy people.
The lines are prety much devoid of bait so Im thinking I may just pull them, still havnt gotten hold of the families cousin to see if I can set lines off of their property.
I did catch a really nice rug today  :P     It was a keeper, brought it in and parked it up on shore sure wish people would not dump their trash in the water.     >:(

Heh a bread bag and cat food, odd things to catch.
Well I got to town for a bit today and as a side thought I stopped and bought a few bait, asked for a dozen and what I got was about 4 mixed bag of blacknose and redside dace, white sucker, fathead and some sorts of shiners.    Looks like this bait store did a little of their own bait collecting.
Went to put some on the setlines and not 5 minutes after I tossed one back in I got a 18-20 inch walleye, gonna be tasty for sure   :thumbup_smilie:    Kinda odd getting one at 2 PM, I was just baiting them up and looked at that one line and it was jerking all over so I got a walleye.
Tossed a pole out with some bait and a bobber, and the goldeye were marauding it like a school of piranha's.   If I had had a better size bobber I could have caught a bunch more of them but I landed 5 kept 3.    Gonna eat 2 of them just to try them and gonna use one for bait if needed.
But one of my setlines, another one is shot so Ill have to fix that one, that leaves me with 4 in the water and the two out need repairing and one thats in the water does too.      But thats okay I have the 4 baited up with live bait and am hoping for a cat or walleye in the AM.
Ill see if I can upload the pictures later when I have more time

There isn't a pile of meat on those goldeye and they are a fairly bony fish.  They are a bit of a local delicacy smoked, so if you have the opportunity, try that.

Dont have a smoker, I fillet them and seemed to have gotten as much meat as I have off of perch in the past, they taste bad Ill just toss them, saved the guts and head for bait still.

Sure gonna taste good too, the first one was great.       If Im out here this winter maybe you adn dad should make a trip up here to ice fish Ft. Peck, if not Ill make a trip to fish "the river" seeing as we have winter access on there  now.    We might get to Ft. Peck for some pike trolling in the next few weeks.  Would love to hook into a 10+ pound piek for sure.
Got out today and my gf caught her first solo fish, first day fishing with a spinning rod and she is casting well and hooked and reeled in a goldeye  :thumbup_smilie: (she is the one who wanted to bring the fishing pole)  saved it for bait incase we run out.      Seems that goldeye love a fathead suspended about a foot below the surface.

Hmm it could possibly be, I new it wasnt a sauger because of the white on the fins.   Have to say the motteling struck me odd, but i had never seen a walleye smaller like that up close.     So it could possibly be a saugeye, I know there are sauger around here and in the river too.    I had a bunch of pictures taken so I Will see if I can dig through them and find a little better picture of the fish.

That stinks, I like fried cat too, up here I dont think there is too too much to polute the water to make them un-eatable, and the daily limit for channel catfish is 20 or 30 a day!    I dont think I woul dever want to keep that many, 1 or 2 a day is fine by me.

Got two fish off the setlines yesterday 1 walleye and 1 cat.     Before anyone says anything yes I know the cat is small, It bit a 4/0 hook and a huge chunk of bait, I tried my best to revive the poor little guy but he was pretty much all but dead, even have a rain tank here I put him in there for a while and it still died, I tried my best to re-vive it but it was dead, so I kept it as to not waste the meat,   They both came off of chunks of goldeye.

I thought by using 4/0 hooks on most of my rigs and circle hooks on the rest Id be able to avoid small fish like this

AD, that's a sauger - spotted dorsal fin and lack of white tip to tail distinguish it from the walleye...they're cousins though - both members of the perch family.  Occasionally they cross-breed to get saugeye.

I was wondering if it was bit disregarded it because the whole bottom of the dorsal had white on it so I thought walleye, but now that you say that it does occur to me that it is just white tipped.

Thinking one of the others that I caught earlier on might have been a saugeye also.      Not used to having sauger around, Ill have to pay a lot closer attention if I am lucky enough to catch any others/

Before anyone says anything yes I know the cat is small

Yes the catfish isn't a giant by no means, but why are you defending yourself on keeping a small catfish.  If the fish is within limits you did nothing wrong.  That size catfish is the best size for eating,  I personally will not attempt to eat any catfish over 3 or 4 lbs.  A friend caught a big cat once and he had the bright idea to clean it and make catfish nuggets for a fish fry.  Well I think a total of 3 nuggets were eaten and the rest of the fish had to be thrown away, it tasted so nasty, muddy, and gritty, just horrible.  The same friend and I once got into a mess of catfish about the size of yours once, we ended up keeping close to 40 of them.  It took a while to clean them the way we do it, but those fillets were all eaten up at that fish fry.

Guess what I caught today on the set lines?    A sturgeon, its not a pallid, I think its a shortnose or shovelnose (I forget which one of them is around here.     But yeah I took a quick picture and let it go.     It had sort of lassoed and snagged itself, but was really lively and took almost no reviving, not to mention it was only out of the water for like 15 second most.      Just a little one didn't even put the tape measure to it just got it and let it go.
Uploading the pictures right now Ill post them later.     Its good to have a person fishing with you so you can get pictures quicker and let the fish go.
From what I could see though the fish was hooked in the mouth at first just thrashed and ended up shaking the hook loose and re-snagging itself.       The hook just fell right out afer the pictures were taken and then off it went to live and fight another day.
Havnt caught much on the setlines since that 2 fish day though.   But I have been doing really well on the goldeyes on rod and reel for a little C&R and the occaional one for bait.    The Goldeye have been cooperating pretty well with a 20 fish day being the norm for latly, all though the bite is slowing down seeign as the weather has gone odd.    Its been nice to have then there biting as well to give my gf some practise catching some fish.
Looks like I might be in Virginia by the 8th or so give or take a few days.      Im hoping itll be that soon at leaste.
But enough jibber jabber and here is the fish picture

Ill be workign part time for the state of Virginia in the fish hatchery outside of Marion, my boss from Alaska now is the head manager there and gave me a call to see if I could come work for him.    Its part time 3.5 days a week, but Ill be getting a full time job and my CDL within  a year hopefully.     Ill be staying with my boss and his wife and faimily rent free, so working 3.5 days a week Ill still be able to get by, and ther ewill be a lot of time for fishing      ;D    Anyways Ill be making enough money to save up some cash on the side too.

Jim - hope the VA trip can wait until atfer Labor Day.  There is a new river spot to be broken in!

BTW, sturgeon is prolly a shovelnose, with the off chance it could be a pallid.  I'm looking up ID stuff.

Cuz, yeah I believe it was a shovelnose, they have the un=even whisker length, pallids whiskers are the same length I believe.     And yeah seeign as it is a state job I do not think Ill be starting work too soon, Im hopping to get the rest of the paperwork in the mail tomorrow, then I have to fill it out and send it to my boss who will send it elsewhere.      So Im hoping ill be around for at leaste one trip to the river.    If not Ill be back up for some icefishing, or maybe deer hunting this fall.

Bigred, yeah I was pretty lucky to get to land one, they certainly are a neat looking fish.

Got a litttle channel cat on the setline this morning, no camera for pictures but it was smaller than the otherone and me and my girlfriends decided to let it grow, going to have a fish fry thursday with what is in the freezer anyways.    Think Ill pull the lines out friday afternoon since Im leaving saturday, a few more days to actually land a big one.

Yeah it is pretty much the job that I have been wanting, and went to college for, so itll be good.       And I will know where to fish too ;)    It will be a great way to get aquainted with the area doing ride-alongs with the stocking truck, and getting paid for it untill I get my CDL and can legally drive those beasts.
Its in the far western tip of Virginia up in the blue ridge mountains I believe.

Got a channel cat off the lines this AM, a decent eater, Ill post the pics later tonight.     This one was rolling too just rolled a bunch of times on the line, but the swivel I added took care of most of the tangles, only had the hook to un-ravel.
Seeing the size of this fish coming in as I was pulling in the lines Im even more convinced the channel cat I lost was 15+.
But we are going to have a fish fry this thursday and a big one at that too.    :D

but here is the keeper I got on 8/22/05  hopefull maybe another picture later tonight when I check the lines latter this AM.      Crossing my fingers for the 10+ pounder.

Thats a nice cat! There is some beautiful country in the blue ridge area. I was there a couple of years ago on a week long camp and hunt. I am hoping to get there this year as well but not sure if I'll make it.

I have a channel bigger than that in my aquarium! He was only a few inches when I got him and now he is getting to big for the tank :-\ He may just become an eater so I can get some guppies or something (cat fish don't make very good pets, he is always grumpy and ate all my other fish even the cleaner fish!)

Geeze what size fish tank do you have?      Thats a pretty big channel cat for a fish tank and quite the hunger to feed, but I bet it is neat to watch it for sure.
Im looking forward to getting to see the Mountains down there in Virginia, should be a fun new experience.

Oh yeah I got another channel cat this AM about the same size as the one yesterday just skinnier.      It had a belly full of goldeye and some other baitfish though.       Another fish for the fish fry.  :)            I'll post the pictures later.    For cat's and the walleye/sauger Ive been catching, nothing else I have used has matched goldeye for bait yet, only have caught one fish that wasnt on the goldeye that was the 6 pound walleye I got earlier on, will post the pictures when I get back to NY of that one, Ive gotta sort my laptop out as it isnt cooperating (Im on a tabletop right now).      But that walleye came off a cow liver.     Gave off some real nice meat too.

I would say it is easily 3 or 4 pounds and close if not over 20 inches. I think its going to break my tank cuz it freaks out once in a while. (my recodemation is not to have one as a pet, eats a tone {it likes meow mix}, does not like any other fish in the tank {except a big gold fish} and freaks when I walk by the tank and slams into the other side!)

Neat photo of your catfish Deposit. He is a nice looking cat. He eats other fish you say, humm he shows that cat fish are not the mer scavengers and botton cleans you might think they are, they are both skillful predators and scavengers. :azn:

AlaskanDreams, do you string your set lines across the river, in a row of hooks or how do you set them up, in my area we can't do that but it, neat to see how they work. :)

Fishing on the Missouri River above Ft. Peck Reservoir I am legally entitled to have 6 lines out with 6 hooks on each.    Their is no way I could string them across the river due to its width and amount of crap that washes down it.       Right now I have 4 lines out due to the limited space I have permission to fish.
Putting out these setlines has been a learning experience for sure though.     Right now the general setup I am running is for line I am using braided nylon (it has to be braided) Something with not too big of a diameter to reduce snag and objects that get snagged on the line.     Also with braided if the current picks up and rolls the setline down the river it will not un-ravel your line.      I have it anchored on shore to a stick in the ground (with my name and phone number on each stake)     For weight right now I am using horseshoes (the kind off of actual horses) this way if it gets snagged and the line breaks I am only out a horseshoe and not some big expensive weight.       The lines very in length depending on how far out I can toss them and where they are (certain places there is no reason to toss them out too far otherwise they just get washed down stream.     I like to try to keep the lines perpendicular to the bank.     I like this for a few reasons, this way if it isn't that way when I go to check them I know it has got a fish on it or is just loading up with algae and other debris.      The hooks I try to place further down the line to get them away from the shallow bank.     I have 6 hooks on 3 of the lines and 4 hooks on the fourth.      I space them down the bank a ways so if they was down they wont get tangled.    The one whole I am able to fish is tiny, so I have one setline in the current above it and one right on the edge of the current (these two are the ones that I catch the majority of my fish off of, with the bigger fish coming out of the current and not on the edge).    For hooks I am using what I could find in the stores around here, snelled 4/0, and that is what lost me the bigger fish the snelling just broke.     If I was running the setlines for more longterm I would invest some money and beef up my equipment, go to cable leaders and install large tri-swivels on the line to stop it from rolling and twisting from the current, and big fish.      Looking at the regulations for Virginia there is a chance I may be able to do some of this sort of thing down there for big blues and channel cats.    So this might have all just been a learning experience for me (If I cant down there then that is okay too)
I've learned a lot and its just been through trial and error and research on the net (more error then trials though) but its been a good experience.    I know it isn't real fishing with hook and line, but it is fun to hand line a fish into shore, and when I had the two big ones and unfortunately lost them, the heart rate was sure racing.         But Ive gotten enough fish for a few fish frys.    And somehow I do not think th few channel catfish I have taken are a problem, seeing as the daily limit is 20 or 30.      Seems that the catfish population must be large around here.
I have enjoyed it though Ive gotten a 6lb channel cat and a nice 6lb walleye off the lines.

Neat way to fish AlaskanDreams. Do you use a circle hooks? Or how do you keep the fish on for a length of time? I know with regular hooks that  fish can turn and twist and still work that hook out in a few min, even when you really set the hook, the fish basically tares a hole big enough for the hook to fall out. :o

All I can find around here is 4/0 snelled.      I brought a few circles so I had those on the lines too, but I have lost fish off of the sneeled for sure.    If I had more, and bogger circle hooks I would hav ecaugt nore fish.      Seemed that some of the fisher were just content to sit ther and stay hooked while others just rolled adn rolled.
Im sure a lost fish cause I wasnt using the circle hooks, if I ever put out setlines again Ill get some good circle hooks for them for sure.

Well Ive been back in NY for a bit now (headed to Virginia wednessday)
Been fishing the St. Lawrence River a bit by our camp.      Got one small pike (18 maybe) one small small mouth, and tons of panfish, two different batches the first were small with one beefy pumpkinseed that was a solid 8.5 incher.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv50%2Fdeerslayer07%2Fpanfish.jpg&hash=52ca954608bce62dc0a0ebb46a522f71)

Round two was much better, which is when I got the smallie.
A good batch of perch and pumpkinseeds.     Kept a dozen or so.      Only problem is with this batch 1/2 of the perch were filled with whitegrub
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv50%2Fdeerslayer07%2Fwhitegrub.jpg&hash=395183588370d93f9e79d364b3fee496)
And another with what loooked like necrotic flesh?    I dunno about this one though
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv50%2Fdeerslayer07%2Fnecroticflesh.jpg&hash=03767c41006bf63378272fa4a7c84214)
and one pumpkinseed had black spots insisted into its flesh (glucidia?) maybe   I was thinking it could be the early life stage of clams.   I dont think black spot goes into the flesh it stays more in the skin if I am correct.

But not bad for fishing on the river outside of Ogdensburg in a little canoe.

nice fish AD, nice to be back in the empire state for a bit?

the black spots in the flesh looks like good 'ole black grub...the trematodes will burrow into the flesh as well as just the skin.

Uploading some pictures as I type, hopefully they will upload.     If not Ill upload them next week when Im back on cable internet up North.
Ive been Working for the state of Virginia at the fish hatchery, which the Inland fisheries division is also based out of.     They have been doing a lot of sampling to check populations and see how our trout stocking has been going, and see how their stocking of walleyes, and management of other species has been going.     From what I have seen the fisheries are being managed to there top potential.
They try to mostly electroshock because it is non-lethal but once a year they do use gill nets so they can go into some deeper water.    Today was one of those days.     They gill netted The Holston, its half in Virginia and half in Tenesee.   Its a pretty decent lake and they were checking for walleye to see how the stocking and management has been going.    Well lets just say that the walleye are doing great in there, several walleyes in the 6 lb region and one 8 lber were brought in.      Nobody really likes the whole gill netting thing, but it is the only reliable way to check out and see what is going on.      Ill post a few pictures of some of the fish when they upload.      But we were taking Otiliths, weights and lengths on the fish and any other data.     The fish are doing well, young of the year walleye that were stocked are a full inch or two larger then the ones that were naturally reproduced on the river that flows into the lake,.    Ill tell ya what though these guys know what they are doing, and if your a sportsman in Virginia your money is being put to good use.   We have limited fishing around here but they do the best with what they can to maximize the potential for anglers to catch numbers of fish and size.     Then nets do kill the fish but only tend to catch a limitednumber, and absolutly no damage is doen to the total population in the lake, which is booming.     The Aelwifes adn gizzard shad have had two booming years.    Lots of baitfish for all the other fish to munch on, which has made the fishing rough for anglers, same with a bunch of the other lakes.    There is jsut so much natural forage that the fish are harder to catch because there bellies are a lot more full.    But all the data we can take of the fish gives us more knowledge adn thoughts adn information on how we can grow a bigger adn better fish in the lakes adn hatcheries.
Ive helped them out a few other times electroshoking some of the lakes, and local rivers and streams.     The trout are dooing really well too.   Some of the streams out of a 100 foot section of stream we have gotten 100+ trout, and most of those were natural reproduction.     Although the trout have taken a pretty good hit down her ethis summer as it has been so dry, today we got out first somewhat signifigant rain since almost 3 months ago,   rivers and creeks are running really low, which has hurt the trout and other stream fishes.
I havnt been fishing much,  work has kept me here at nights doing some night checks and leave removal off of our intake screens.
The other pictures dont seem to want to upload but here are a few pictures of the channel cats that I have been catching (no size but really high numbers)  they were this years and last years stocked catfish.

Ill also post some pictures of the trout hatchery down here when I get back north next week for some deer hunting adn family thanksgiving.    Right now including the fry we have at least 800,000 trout if not a full million.   We have over 100,000 right now ready to go out to stocking.    Just waiting for the rain to bring th ercreeks and rivers back up.      Most of those 100,000 tout are about 2 fish to the pound, but the browns that are included in that number ate around 1.5 fish to the pound with the occasional couple pounder to toss in.     Ill tell ya there are going to be some fish getting stocked out this year,   perfect eating size.      We took 1.2 million rainbow trout eggs this year and something liek 400,000 brown trout eggs.  We take all that we can because we give some to the other state hatcheries around Virginia that need the fish or eggs.     Ill go into more details when I post the pictures though.
Here is the big walleye of the day

Well I havnt posted much, made myself scarce with a bunch of the crap around here.
Work has kept me pretty busy latly, Its getting warm and the waters getting lower, a real bad combo for a trout hatchery carrying more trout then ever.
Snuck out a couple times for walleye and ran into some bad anglers and a streak of rotten luck.       Called it quits for the year there though.       Talked to a Game Warden when we were out stocking, he got called for a potential record walleye, ended up being a spent female and was a half pound short of the record, she weighed in at 14.5 pounds or something,    if he had caught her full of eggs it would have been a 17+ pound walleye.     The angler releeased her to catch again next year.     In the old old record books there is one that was suspected to go 17 + and one that was weighed at 21, but they re reallyl old records.
Walleye bite will get real hot soon down south.
back north for a  bit though.

Did a little Rainbow fishing down there adn caught a few, somehow it just seems like harvesting cattle to me still, I know where the little buggers came from adn tossed food at them before they left.
Caught 4 or 5 sub-legals and one legal keeper and took a pic
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv50%2Fdeerslayer07%2FLaurelbedrainbow.jpg&hash=e0f41f6e2835262e4c6265476006e401)

As you can tell it was skinny, not too much for food in that high mountain top lake.   SO they are simple to catch.

LOL  I know how you feel. When I would keep a few trout that I had raised and were stocked locally,  I always thought a little bit before I cut'em up.  Then I would eat them and invariably they would be mighty fine tasty ;D

yeah they sure do taste good, that rainbow never even made it into the fridge, got fried up right after I cleaned it.

Back up north now like I said, and wow is all I haev to say, went to check out a spo that me adn my dad get some trout from adn we did as good as ever.   were fishing for 45 miutes, took 15 minutes to find them.    WE got our limits of brookies, in about 30 minutes.  The bite was HOT.

Sad thing is 1 older gentleman and his young son left right as we got ther after fishing for a while and landed one small rainbow.    Two other gentlemen left with nothing to show and here me and my dad are landing them one right after the other.

Got back out alone after the brookies this afternoon, and man it was windy.    Nothing working on the secret bait, must have been the weather.   Had to go on the search with a certain lure.   The brookies were tapping it, more nosing it, they werent hitting hard at all.   Nailed three though and into the bucket they went.     I caught 2 on back to back casts, adn a third about 2 or 3 casts later and then that was it, nothing else would even bite it.

Hey they were still alive :) WTG on the brookies

They had been tossed in a bucket full of water right after being caught and were not too pleased about it.    They were alive untill they got a bit of a tap on the head before the knife.

Went up to the family camp and we all enjoyed ourselves, even Ben did.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv50%2Fdeerslayer07%2Fbenn.jpg&hash=ce883255861f651ec349b799451e642f)

Well got out for opening day of pike saturday, my intentions were to go after some pike in an area where we figured they would be.
It was a wet rainy and windy day making drifts with the boat hard to do with the rver current.    Me and my dad started off with lures and tossed everything at them.     Rattle traps, jgs, spoons, a lot of other things.     Started a drift with sone golden shiners a felt some weight, no real hit or bite but some weight on the pole.  Turns out I had a fish on, got it up adn netted it, a walleye and just 18 inches, not what we were looking for, and it was a bit....   deformed,   check out its spine and tail.    Got it measured and ito the livewell and Dad hooked up, and landed a little pike (19 inches) and the next drift he got another sub-legal pike (20 inches((ooops typo fixed to 20)))   bother were really fat pike though.      Rain was getting cold and almost sleet so we called it quits.

But here is the walleye, and no I am not bending its tail at all, that is the way the fish was.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv50%2Fdeerslayer07%2Fmay07walleye1.jpg&hash=fea049441da3cfdf7d21dbc142d194b5)

Chucker got there later on in the day, and we went back out again, adn the wind was even stronger, making the fishing hard and the drifts even faster (not to mention making it cold).   Only one fish was landed,  a brute of a Smallmouth, guessing it was somewhere around 4 pounds, didnt weigh or measure it, was out of the water long enough for a picture and a release.    Best fight from a fish Ive had in a while,  the wind and the current were pushing us one way and the bass was heading the other way.     I had a blast.    Was good to be back out fishing with my dad and cousin again, but its back south and back to work tomorrow.

I forgot about that pike, must not have been big enough to remember   :D        nah it was a nice fat little pike for sure.     Would have liked to seen the fish that came off the husky jerk later on though.

But yep that walleye tasted just fine and dandy.

It seems somebody's memories of other's catches is off a bit. Second pike in am was 20 not 10" inches.

One thing for sure is that it was truly nasty weather where we were. But any day on the water with you two is still fun for this old guy. Ben though had right idea staying in camp under the blankets.

Do wish we'd seen that one that got away on Chucker...........

Wow is all I can say, few of the guys aroudn here go down to tennessee to one of the lakes and fish for hybrids, and they were nice enough to invite me along yesterday ( well last night through part of today).      We were mainly fishing for hybrid's (striped bass and white bass mix I think).      They went a few weeks ago and caught a ton, and big ones too.     Like I said they invited me along this trip.    We were pitching shad for the most part, with "light" tackle (medium-medium heavey weight poles and 10 lb test)    I landed 4, all of which were over 6 pounds and one was a bit over 10.   After four fish my arms were pretty sore, Id have to say they are about the hardest fighting freshwater fish I have ever hooked (maybe besides a few larger northerns).  I have not had somethign pull that hard in a long time now.     Not just one run, get them up to the boat they see the light and listen to the drag scream off 50 yards in a matter of seconds, get them back near the boat and off it goes again.      What an amazing trip, They took a picture of my first three and when I get copies Ill try to get them posted.      The guys were great, invited me along, let me use a few of their fishing poles (they had a few extra) and pretty much showed me what to do.     I think we boated 10 hybrids, I got four, and one of the other guys got 5 or 6, and the other got none.      What a trip though.     We C&R them all.     Ill be hopping to get back there soon, if not thats okay though.

As promised (but a bit late) here are some of the channel cat pictures from the past few trips.    And some of the panfish which are infesting the shores, pre-spawn.       Nothing big catfish wise but there have been plenty of them at leaste, havnt gotten skunked yet.
Thats about the normal size

Yeah some of the smaller ones look pretty nice with the coloration the way it is.   For their size they put up a pretty good tussel bringing them in too.     I havn't kept any yet this year, but Im sure that will change one of these nights.

Well I have been saving up a bit of money here and there with work, finally broke down and spent some today.     Got a hitch installed on my 98 dakota, going to borrow a "hitch extender" and will get some use out of my canoe finally.    I got it almost 5 years ago when I graduated highschool.     Along with the hitch and reciever for the truck I purchased a few new "toys" for my canoe.
It will work well for what I need it for,  seeing as a regular boat just is no-where near my price range.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv50%2Fdeerslayer07%2Fcanoe.jpg&hash=f7b40a8f9932c34b4e473ade8307f02e)

Ive got a set of paddles (and a set of oars and oarlocks) for it also.
Bass-pro had the electric motor on sale along with the battery and motor mount.     I fish mainly electric motor only lakes and the canoe will be about perfect for them now.

Could have entered the pike or smallie in the tourney but seeign as the pike was too small to keep I let it go without all that measuring and stress.   And the smallies I C&R's (with much internal debate)

Deposit, Dinner was around nine, the three of us (my mom dad and me) finished the pike up.     Still have to say pike is a great eating fish.      They go real well with a nice cold Blue also.

Hey cuz, yeah we were around the island, out in front o camp didnt give up any fish (except a monster fish that broke dad off, it had to be something pretty darn good sized too)    The bigger smallie was caught out of 3 ft of water.
The x-rap's earned their keep again in my tackle box, even lost the treble off of one too.
Explored a few new spots and they proved to be good finds,   Youll have to get dad to take ya out there this fall.

Now I just got to get my canoe registered and itll be fish-on.    Till then Im still parked on the back.

Its worth a trip to the coast, or worth everyone to go to alaska once in a life time (at leaste)

I havnt been fishing since Ive got down here, we got three to five inches of rain here, absolutly poored, so thats done in my night fishing off the banks.   Its not the water level in the lakes, they are fine, its Ive been pulling partial night duty and keeping an eye on the dam level and keeping the intake screens clear so work gets all the water it needs.     The stream is chocolate milk brown, and its been washing down all sorts of trash and leaves to clog the screens.
I did get a copy of three pictures from my hybrid striper trip a few weeks back Ill work on scanning them in.    And Ill post a picture of the striper one of the guys caught last weekend, its a 40 + pound one  :o    .      Its huge.

Im itching to get out, Ive got new gear adn a canoe if I chosoe to go out on a lake, or I can sit on the bank with my new rod holder and blacklight.

Hope you get a chance to get out soon. Rain here mostly to south and east.

I-88 by Armours washed out all four lanes right by the exit we use. Fishing anywhere east and south of here is  really gonna be messed up. Massive flooding will wash away a lot of fish.

Supposed to be okay up north.

Looking forward to posting of striper pics.

Cuz says fish photos aren't as difficult to view as fish fry ones when I talked with him the other day.

No pictures from tonight's trip,   I did not even let my camera go to within 10 feet of the water with the way my luck was going tonight.
On my way to the lake I shorefish, I narrowly miss a young black lab, who seemed rather intent on getting run over.     So I get to the lake and get set up,    get three poles rigged up and tossed out, and get to setting up my lantern and putting a new mantel on it.       I get  the first one on, burn it off, and its got a hole in it, so I have to take that one off, and put the only one left I had on the lantern.    Get it burnt off all set to go, put the propane cylinder on in and set the lantern aside.   Hadn't had any bites yet so I check my poles.    Not one of them, nor two of them, but all three were snagged.     End up breaking all three lines.    On the third pole I was pulling on the line, the line breaks the pole bounces back straight, hits a lantern pole and snap, the pole breaks in half and I watch in amazement as the tip of the pole precedes to fly back out 3 feet into the lake.   Oh but this trip gets better.   Walk down the back, 50 feet and cast and real a sinker back in in a fan like re-peat casting.    All clear no snags good to go,     Got everything moved over, down to two poles set-up and cast them out.     Its just about dusk so I fire up my lantern, it doesn't want to start, the automatic igniter isn't lighting,   it lights finally (with a near explosion) but its working, set it aside and try to catch the fish that are tapping away at both poles (had to be smaller channel cats) and precede to re-bait each pole a ton of times) but half-way through that the lantern tips over, I freak, reach for it and ssssttttt.    Burnt my finger, but I got it upright, but now the lantern is off and wont-restart at all, my last mantel was busted in it anyways now.    So I break out my brand new shore blacklight and give that a whirl, it worked as well as I hoped at least)      I ended up getting my bait stolen and caught nothing, went through a  whole tub of livers with only one lost fish to show for it (it felt like an okay cat too).      I call it quits and head back to the house.   Get here get inside, get my gear set-aside.   And realize I left my second tub of livers in the cab of my truck, go out to the truck, I locked it.   Not quite sure where I left my keys tonight, in my room somewhere, so the livers will have to wait till the morning cause I had enough for one nights excursion.
Final score 1 broken pole, 1 broken lantern, one full tub of livers, no fish landed, and one burnt finger.      I think the fish came out the winners tonight with a full stomach of chicken livers.
Tonight was one of those nights I should have just stayed home.     Hay but at least it was a nice-weathered evening, and I found where I can get some crayfish and baitfish for one of my turtle tanks.

You're way ahead of me, cuz.  I haven't gotten out at all, save for one backyard outing 2 weeks ago.  Chris got 4 smallies that wouldn't even have been good pike bait, and I got a clam the size of my palm.  On a spinnerbait, no less!

That really sucks Cuz,    If everything is okay by early August or September maybe we can get out a few different times, camp is turning into a pretty good spot to fish from from what Ive heard and seen.
Its looking like I am going to have to take a month off from work, Ive about got my yearly hours maxed out, so Ill have a month free to do some heavey fishing.
Actually there is also a chance I may be purchasing a 14 ft john boat with a trailer and a 25 hrs mercury on the back (for 400 or 500).     The motor even runs well.     If I get it it might stay up north at camp with dad.

Been a while since Ive posted some pictures, But its basically been the same for a while, small channel cats and some panfish.

Had to take a month off of work so I migrated back north for a while to do some fishing.

Have had a pretty good first week so far.

havnt landed anything big, yet, but with light tackle its always fun.

Dad lost another one that jumped off that was probably close to 20 + inches.    One heck of a nice smallie.    Still this one (amoung others) that he landed was a nice one.

I cant seem to find any big northerns, but I am the king of catching undersized ones.       Chucker will testify to the fact that there are some nice 29+ inchers around like the one he C&R'd (no picture)

Fished over the weekend with Chucker, and his nephew, and my dad.     We all helped Chucker's nephew land his first and second smallie.      He was pretty happy, and was curious as to the cleaning process, so we brought a few more back to camp for the frier.

the perch wouldnt lay still for a picture.

Plenty more fish were caught then pictured, and a good time was had by all.    More pictures to come in the next 3 weeks.

Picture heavy (29+ pictures), lots of fish, lots of fun.

Im the one with the beard, my brother is the other "younger" looking guy, and the "older" man and laddy are my mom and dad.

Well my month off is starting to wind down (only have till next monday and Im headed back south) the fishing has been amazing.    With one day 16 or 18 bass being boated and 15 of those were legal size, most were released though.    Pike were a bit on the small size, but with many being caught.
on to the pictures.

Many bass were boated (lots were released without pictures).
My dad lost a monster pike or musky.   Never have seen one hooked scream off line like it did before, and we have boated some nice fish in the past.

No real big pike were caught, biggest was a 24 incher that I caught.      Had a 34 + inch (guessing) pike nail my daredevil imitation next to the boat, but came off.     Bass on average were going about 2.5 pounds, with several bigger being boated and lost.

thanks,   we jsut found where they were adn thats all it took.

hah, lets see if I can upload this video correctly, if it works it will be a video of our bassett hound Ben, standing on the ow of the boat while we were moving (I had a good hold on him though)     he seems to enjoy the wind or something because he does this all the time now.

I guess you guys and gals found some smallies. very nice, was that in NY here somewhere?
And for those dark pictures, try putting the sun in front of ya, not behind ya.
But, if you have photoshop, you should be able to fix the lighting in those photos.

The vid of your basset hound's ears flapping in the wind is great.
Thanks for sharing those great fishing days on the water.

Yeah I usually try to take them with the sun in front of me.    I was just in a hurry to C&R the bass and wasnt paying too much attention to where the sun was.

The fish were indeed caught in New York, all were caught out of the St. Lawrence river.

very nice indeed, and I know how that hurry up and take the shot, let me put the fish back and catch another. That is why during a killer bite, I will throw a few nice ones in the livewell and take a picture of them later.  ;)
Looks like there are tons of nice and fun smallies in the St. Lawrence river, WTG.  8)

Smallies wernt bitting too well, the colder weather brought them off the bite a bit.

But the pike were still biting.      Explored a bit more of the river and found a pretty good spot.     Caught a few friday night, saturday I landed 3 and lost at leaste 4 others.    And today I landed one.
Yesterday (saturday) I got a pike on back to back casts, the second I hadnt even began to reel in before it hit.        Managed to get two keeping sized ones and they were bound for the deep frier.

Yeah a fair amount.     There usually is one in the freezer, enough for a good meal and the rest tend to get let go.

Wow,  its been a while since I last updated,   or fished haha
The winter months are slow here in VA and work has been busy.
I start a new job on the 26th, got on full time at one of the fish hatcheries so things are only going to get busier, not to mention Im looking for a new place to move into.       So needless to say it doesnt look like Ill get too much fishing in for a bit.

The walleye's are running though.     Managed to get out for a few hours Thursday night for them, and landed one small sub legal male.      Slammed my rapala that only was 2 feet from the end of my rod.     Managed to get all three hooks into it.

   (https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv50%2Fdeerslayer07%2FDSCF2415.jpg&hash=2475d280feb7d9503074407b0893bed8)

A bit far off rom my goal of a 10 + pound wall hanger but ya gotta start somewhere.

I probably wont fish for them too much though, the crowds get too large and the true jerks show up.

Had a lot better luck tonight in the old 'eye spot.    Seems  for about that 1/2 before dark 1/2 after the bite was on.   But I fished from about 4:30 till 9:30 or so, and was constantly casting the whole time.
I was bank fishing a river, and every time Id pull the rapala off the oppostite shallows over the drop off something would nail it
Whether it was a walleye of a quilback (need identification on that one I could be wrong picture will be posted below) something would grap the rapala, and yes these quilback sould actually bite (hooks were in the mouth)

**note that thats a f-11 rapala on that fishing rod and the tip of my boot in the picture **
      (https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv50%2Fdeerslayer07%2FDSCF2417.jpg&hash=0b45ecf8313b97313025a1c93a561c64)

Finally got one keeper, haha   its actually my biggest walleye ever so far too, a 20 incher, hey Im getting there.     It was pretty fat, I was thinking it was a hen, but when I fillet it it turned out to be a male.      All the better, plenty of males to go aroun, nice not to have to take a female out to eat.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv50%2Fdeerslayer07%2FDSCF2424.jpg&hash=4340b471b4ecab9cfb55d19d829371bc)

I landed one other smaller walleye, another sub -legal, and lost several at the bank or out farther, one would have been legal also.
I lost a bunch more of those quilback, and landed several others.    Seems that they spawn the same time as the walleye.

*note that its perfectly legal to fish for the walleye in the spring here in Virginia, Im not poaching these fish.    The section of water I fish has a 18 inch minimum and 5 fish creel all year round*

oh, here is the river Im fishing......      If anyone was fishing the other side and happens top find the 3 rapalas (f-11 brown trout pattern) on the opposite shore Id appreciate it if they return them to me haha.

and just another picture for the fun of it.

Nice picss. Glad to hear you are getting out and about other than seeing fish at work all day. Basset pose looks a bit familiar. They're so good at finding a comfy position.

Looking forward to being able to fish with you down there and having the crew from there come north to fish on our turf.

I hope so, but its not looking like I'll be able to get back North before then.    My job will get real hectic after hat first week in April.     5 days a week, and friday nights too will be gone.
Most of my time off will com ein winter time, when the mountain is closed down.     I would liek to sneak up sometime, and a 4 dayy weekend or possibly 5 might be able to work,  but no more two week trips for a while at leaste.
Maybe sometime you and dad can make a trip down.      I know right now they are catching monster stripers out of Boone in TN.    Their was a 50 + pounder landed sometime last week from what they radio report said alon gwith several other 30's.
The wallaye are starting to come in thicker.      I rand out of plugs last night but I landed 4 and lost a big hen right at shore.     If I can find my thumb drive Ill post a few more pictures.

Well here are three pictures from days gone by.    About this time last year, a buddy took me down to his hybrid hotspot and put me on a few nice ones.     I have three pictures, but caught four.    He said it was real slow too, Ive seen his pictures from nights where he has caught 25 + of these drag pulling tackle busting bad boys.     :flex:

Fishing here has been slow latly, but should pick up as the aelwives come on the spawn a bit stronger.      Went out for catfish 4 nights last week and only caught two on thursday night and last a walleye off of a plug.      Couldnt stay out too late or go too early though, work's been keepoing me real busy latly.

Both  ;D

They fight amazing on medium to heavey tackle.     Drag screaming rod bending, tackle busting fun.
they taste really good too, sort of similar to regular striper meat.

Awsome,   hope you two have a good weekend weatherwise, although the past indicates towards bad weather  :D
I'll probably head out in my canoe sometime this weekend (if I cant sweet talk my way into a trip to the lake in tenn.), and if I get everything un-packed by then into the new appartment.       The aelwives are getting on the spawn so hopefully the walleye will be up and after them.

I'm not sure of Where it is, but Smith Mountain lake has them in it I think.      I'll tell you though that they wont be as fat or bulky, VA doenst quite have the forage that the Tenn. fish have.    A lot of VA lakes a 5 or 6 pounder is a good fish, in tenn its a small one.

Well I made it back North to New York for a little fishing for a week after the 4th of July on the St Lawrence and the fishing was incredible.       I ended up with 23 pike (12 of which were caught in one day) 3 walleye (one was a personal best)
Fishing for pike was the best since my paents bought the camp a few years back.     Teh  current was swift making it hard to fish for the walleyes.      All three walleye were surprises when I was casting for pike.

I'm back north again for some fishing and a buddies wedding, hopefully Ill have som emore pictures to post after this trip.

Well no new fishing pics (been too busy hunting), but a few scenery pics at leaste.     Sorry bout the crappy quality but I was board and all I had on me was an old 3 mega-pixel digi.     Left my good one home on avccount of how cold its been.
Got me thinking about those cold mornings on the ice when the holes get to steaming   The whole place looked like that, we have had consitant temps in the low 30's to high 20's here in SW VA.  Every mornign it was in the low teens with one of them going single digits.     Even had some ice forming, in one of the bottom settling ponds it was up to an inch and a half.    Supprised the heck out of me.

Our temps have been in the 20's the past week with heavy winds.

Suprised to see it's that cold down there?

Post by: AD on Nov 24, 2008, 05:34 PM
Yeah the temps broke  for the cold side.  I loved it being a NYer at heart, everyone else was complaining.     If it stay's like that, or gets cold enough this winter I know of a few high elevation lakes that'll get good enough ice to walk on, and fish on.      Believe it or not I actually have seen pictures of a 3/4 ton pic-up parked on ice in VA, the lake at that point (12 winters ago) had 12 inches of ice.

Up in the mountains itll stay, but the low elevations it goes away real quick, was warm yesterday and most of the snow/ice burnt off.

:-X    wasnt really sure if I was going to post this cause I feel like an idiot, haha

Well I thought I was finally going to have some decent photos to take.

Jsut to let everyone know, walleye season is open all year round here in VA.   It is about the only time that a shore angler can reliably target walleye with any luck.

Took a drive down to the South Holston to do some walleye fishing, they are post, and mid spawn, and the bite was great.    I ended up getting my limit, with 2 spent hens in the 3 to 4 pound range.      The 4 others were males in the 18 - 20 inch range.      I think everyone else fishing was doing real well too.     It had been slow from what I have heard before then but the warm weather that night and warm rain brought them into the spawn real heavily.     Both hens came off of a crawler harness fished from shore, the males came off a rapala floater # 11 in a brown trout patter (my go to lure).      The harnesses worked real well but were slow to produce (but they did produce the two post spawn hens).     The rapala produced on 5 back to back casts (caught a quilback on my thrid cast).     It was rainy so I didnt want to bring my good digital camera, its a bit too expensive to chance getting wet even though I have a water proof case for it.     Came back and cleaned them at work then headed home, happy as could be except for the fact that I forgot to take a pic of them     :'(
Oh well Ill probably head back down one of these nights if Im not too tired from work.   And hopefully Ill remember to take pics when I get back this time.

Well here are some pics finally,    Sorta my average sized stringer, there are 4 on there, 3 were around 9 inches (including one brookie) and one was about 12.     Lost a bunch today, couldn't seem to keep them hooked, were real light on the bite.     But landed 4 bows and 1 brook, let one bow go do to it being too short to keep (less then 7 inches)    Had 3 others up to the bank before they fell loose, had another on with a spinner and went to lift it and it came off.      Had fun though, the rain held off long enough to get some good fishing in.
Been doing stringers about like that on and off this spring and have had some great meals.

Yeah I like the mounts.

Well I went to go trout fishing to my favorite spot and well.....  Didn't get to fish as the road was closed, seems a tornado went through last night and took about a good stretch of the trees adn screwed the road up too.     Me and a few friends drove up to the foot of the mountain, and decided to hike in and check it out.     ITs a good mile or two hike when the gate is closed, but its all graveled.     We ended up up top through the 3 or 4 switch backs and The tornado touched for a good half a mile and took most of the trees with it.   Those that were smaller it wither snapped off, twisted of for just plain splintered.   The bigger ones were broke off or pushed over down the mountain, or pushed over taking the road in parts with it.      Ive never seen anything like it.   Trees that were 2 to 3 feet thick just pushed over like they were a bowling pin, others snapped or twisted.       Ill try not to get too picture heavy, ended up with over 100 pics from a camera phone.

Looking at the news lots of other places got hit, no injuries thankfully.....   The weather services is trying to decide if it was an actual tornado....   Nothing else I know of can touch down and life up like that.....

So no fishing today, but a long hike and lots of pictures.

No fishing either, the creek was the highest Ive ever seen it, well over 4 feet over its normal flow....

Scary part is is if that tornado had kept its path and not lifted off or run outta steam, there were campers tent camping in the creek bottom a half mile down stream    :o
They had to air evac 4 other campers that were trapped up on top of the mountain.

Well,  absolutely slaughtered the trout today.   Two of us hit up a local stream and limited in 30 minutes, and lost many more before we could creel our limits.    I'd say I hooked 5 or 6 others that I lost.....
It was a small stream and the rod is use is an 8 foot crappie rod, I think its got too little backbone for short hook sets due to overhanging brush, I just couldn't get a good hook set.    Ill downsize to a ultralight about 5 or 6 foot long.
They ranged from 8 to 10 inches and all will make for good eaters.

Didn't bother using my card, bigger and better trout to come ;)

Trout fishing has been out of this world this year, they are a little smaller then usual, but hey they all eat real well.

Weather looks like its going to get nasty again so not sure if Ill hit the stream this weekend or not.
Its getting close to the time of year to switch over into catfish and the occasional trout trip instead of heavy trout.

It does sound like crappy weather for your weekend.  We're home, but it sounds like everyone else is on the river.  We're heading up next Friday morning.  Dad and I will try to get some toothies for you.

Well, Ive been hard at it hitting the trout still......

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi609.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ftt173%2Fbartholomew82%2FClinch%252009%2FDSCF0905.jpg&hash=ab49959fa8a2256be3c86bc5fd42f71d)

There is 4

Ended up camping out over the weekend and doing some more trout fishing, ended up with 17 on Saturday and 13 on Sunday, making it a 30 trout weekend, with many more lost at shore or during the fight.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi609.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ftt173%2Fbartholomew82%2FClinch%252009%2FDSCF0924.jpg&hash=d39ccabc3fc10bbf55a0b192e243632e)

And a pic of my fish with a friends fish.

I think all in all the group I was camping with caught about 60 trout all together and let all but a few go.     Out of the 30 I landed I kept 6 Saturday, and 4 Sunday and everyone else kept a few.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi609.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ftt173%2Fbartholomew82%2FClinch%252009%2FDSCF0920.jpg&hash=8684a47a490f6753b4050389b107c422)

It took some work this weekend, usually they wont leave half a night crawler alone, and some bit on the first pass, but others seemed to take the shrimp flavored eggs, others slammed a trout Magnet, and others hit a spinner.     Catch numbers were spread out between those 4 baits.    I ended up carrying a spare pole that I rigged with a spinner or trout magnet.     That way after Id fished a hole for a bit with my bait rod(worms or eggs) Id set that one aside and go at it with a spinner or the trout magnet.

Was packing up camp Sunday, and some people were leaving an didn't want the trout that they had aught, so I ended up taking them too.......    Not sure why people keep fish if they don't plan on eating them?    ???      Its a big waste if you ask me.

What a weekend.....

Started it off by fishing a stream Saturday that hadn't been stocked in over a month, and had been declared "fished out" by the "locals"......    I had my limit in a little under an hour......     The trout were almost coming out of the water to chase after my night crawler.      Caught 5 out of the same little pool which is unusual, usually I can get one, or two at most before the rest in a pool spook out for a while and Ill have to give them a few hours to "calm back down"   Didn't get any pics of those.     With how hige the baitfish population in that stream is along with the large amount of aquatic larva I'll have to check it out again late summer to hit some of the "holdovers"    the potential is there for some great growth.
Today (Sunday) headed up into the fee area, it started off slow, busted off a few hooks on snags and lost several fish before I could bank one.    It was a "grind" sorta day, took lots of fishing and lots of effort but I landed 13 trout and lost a few real good ones, but landed one.     Biggest was 14 inches, but on 4 pound test and an 8 foot crappie rod it was a blast.    She nailed a section of night crawler from her hiding spot bhind a boulder in the deepest pool.    the rod was literally bent in two.     I could land some more of the bigger ones that Ive hooked, but Id rather go light and have fun and loose a few them go heavy and jerk them out of the water.

:edit: oh and the few extras are my friends.....     Heh I didn't go over my limit

havnt posted in a while, been too busy during the week and not here on the weekends.    Been working some massive over time this summer.     Also have been trying to train myself to move up to the next level at work         This has turned into the summer of trout.....    Ive been hitting them hard this summer, most Saturdays have been by a trout stream and some Sundays....     Been limiting every time and then some.  Size has increased greatly too, from 8 to 9 inchers to a constant 14 inch, and about a pound a piece with some small and some lots bigger.....    Had a tangle with a 6 to 8 pounder last Saturday and fought it for a good ten minutes.    Was bringing her to net and she broke off...     Four pound test just doesn't hold up too well, but its all about the fun anyways, she gave me my fair share of that, nothing like seeing and 8 foot ultralight bent over and the drag a squeeling.    Ive been averaging over 10 trout a day, with some days higher and others lower.     Its been a blast.     Met some great people along the stream and have had some great fishing company.    Waters getting lower and clearer though so Ive been having to be stealthier latly.     Been a little trickier.
Was pointed towards a good site for buying some repair items for the boat, so looks like I have a good winter project coming up.

      (https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi609.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ftt173%2Fbartholomew82%2Fp_00018.jpg&hash=49473c7553cec95fdef9ae2631661973)

Crappy pic but there is 12 trout in the sink (my limit and my female friends limit) Biggest was right around 14 inches.

Headed North in a few weeks to put some massive hurt on the Pike smallies and walleye.

Yes he did, and he also mentioned that he picked up a motor for it also.      Hopefully you can take that long weekend and we all can do some fishing, really am hoping to make it a two week trip but we will see.

Laid off the trout for a week and a half to go with my grandparents a happy 60th anniversary, and managed to get some fishing in.    That and offload some trout to my parents in NY.
While dodging some nasty thunderstorms me and Dad did pretty well, my brother landed some nice ones too.
