This mornings splake
« on: Aug 04, 2006, 08:38 AM »
Got out with my friend to try and get a splake to knock TGF's teenie kokenee down the board.  ;D 15 min into our troll he hooks up with with this nice one-

Just like we had planed, except that we forgot to register him in the derby this spring before I left.  oops :'(  Oh well We let it go and I had one on about 20 min later but lost it.  I'll be back out there again in a few days to try again ;D

I have caught only a few splake before, so with that said I have a question. The splake that I have caught have had more of a square tail. Is there more then one type/strain of splake that have different appearences?

toque

Theyre technically a hybrid so they can go to either side of the gene pool

Thanks everyone, hopefully more to come ;D

Touge- Splake vary in their appearance, some more brookie- some more laker some times very hard to tell which they are.

Dwayne- not bad, but we let this one go ;D

I'm no expert at fish id but the main reason I  know it is a splake and not a laker is that only splake are present in the lake we caught it in. ;D  I do think that it has alot of laker characteristics but the spots are not like the lakers we have around here.  Maybe someone else can point out a few more reasons?

i've caught hundreds of splake and never one that even looks near as close to a laker as that one. this is as close as i've seen

Alot of our lakers in BC look just like the one you posted akdg. Similar spots and color.  I don't fish for splake and know very little about them but it sure looks like a BC laker to me. Nice fish either way. Is that in NY or Alaska?

Here is some BC lakers that look similar to yours

There is however much variation in our lakers here....ie
