Catch and Gather
« on: Oct 01, 2018, 11:03 AM »
Had a funeral on Friday and with a few hours of light left decided to take the boat out with my old man and a buddy. We arrived at our launch site and man was it much windier than back at home. Constant winds of 25-30mph with gusts even higher from the north. Slow ride out but we made it to the intended spot and tried to anchor for about 30 minutes with no luck at all. I decided to keep the boat in gear and try to let the 2 guys fish to see if they were even around and willing to bite. Well they were and long story short we ended up catching over 100 tautog and went through 3 gallons of crabs. We worked VERY hard to pick through the little guys but still managed our 10 per boat limit. I have never in my life worked so hard to keep the boat stationary so we could all fish. Somehow I still managed to fish while working the boat and ended up catching 7 of our keepers but lots of credit to my old man for feeding me the bait. One of the best seasons I have seen so far. Fish filleting was enjoyed with some beer for the guys and bourbon on the rocks for me.

Saturday took my little guy out shrooming and did just as well locating a different type of protein. Hens, Chickens, Boletes, and even some edible Corals. Little guy had a blast and slept very well that night to say the least. Defrosted some local beef, dry aged venison, pheasant breast and then chopped up some hen of the woods and chicken of the woods and we all enjoyed a taco feast for dinner.

Sunday, I picked up 30 cases of empty wine bottles and racked 30 gallons of wine. Butchered a few chickens and the rest of the day was spent with my feet up, few drinks in hand watching some football.

For you NH guys, I figured you may like his outfit.

And dinner

Wow, sounds like you have quite a feast in the offing.

What flavor(s) of wine did you bottle?

My wife and I just racked our currant and black raspberry wine over the weekend, and hope to bottle them tonight.

Few flavors.

Currant, Plum, Cherry, Raspberry and Marquette grape.

What do you use for a corker? Do you filter it as well?

Wow, that's quite a variety.

My wife and I generally don't cork.  We recycle wine bottles, generally with twist off caps.

I know that the conventional wisdom is that it's supposed to be a no-no to use anything but corks, but I have not found it an issue in the 25 years that we have been doing it.

We also don't "filter" per se.

We just rack it once through a colander to get the large particulates out, and then siphon it a couple of times (occasionally running the siphoned product through a funnel lined with cheese cloth) to get the smaller stuff out.

Our process leaves a slightly cloudier product  than if we used diatomaceous earth filters and all that, but, again, it doesn't seem to hurt the wine any.

When out in buzzards bay the water temp ranged from 65-68 depending on where you were.

Great job all the way around. I especially like your variety of shrooms.
I fish for those "stupid fish" BASS. Largemouth Smallmouth Stripers, and even Rock bass.
