Well I do a lot of small mouth fishing on lake michigan.  I've found they like a few things. 1 Current  Its almost always a sure thing around charlevoix michigan to hook into a giant (17-22inch) smallie if you find some current.   2. In the middle of summer they go deep 20-40foot range 3 as was mentioned i use crayfish that come outta lake michigan or leeches.   Another thing in michigan they absolutely love are gobies. im not sure where you are from but they eat those gobies like candy if you can find some sand bed in about 30foot water.   Those are just some tips from where i live.   I fish them with a 6'6 ugly  8lb mono.

I always have had the best luck with nightcrawlers and lures in firetiger color patterns. I like rapala originals and they work really good for me.

I've had my best luck w/ 3 and 4" yum dingers drop shotted.  When you find them holding shallower in current, a carolina rigged dinger works wonders.

What kind of waters are you fishing?  I fish a canal/river here and I catch a lot on crank baits or top water baits....

I like to use jig a tube for smallies, or a weightless senko when they suspend.  They will bite just about anything.  Burning a spinner bait, aggressve topwater tactics, a carolina rig craw.  They get really aggressive and sometimes you have to try quite a bit of lures in order to find their favorite on that day.

at low light...first thing in morning or evening....brown bass hammer walking baits and poppers on the surface....
on Lake Champlain the bass are into alewifes, so when they are busting them on the surface the smallies are
the most aggressive ones....I LOVE BROWN BASS!!!

I like to wade for river smallies.  I just look behind some boulders in the rapids and cast there with just about any various lures from spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, topwaters, cranks, and plastics.  Even a bucktail jig under a bobber is awesome for those smallies.
Slip bobber fishing and ice lounger.
