Finding gills.
« on: Apr 09, 2014, 09:17 AM »
I have never done well this time of year catching bluegill and was wanting some advice.

I am planning a trip on Saturday to fish for some gills, was wondering where to start?  I was thinking maybe a shallow man made channel,  or a shallow bay if it is sunny out?  If the weather is bad maybe the drop off outside the shallows. I will probably be fishing with a float and a red wiggler or wax worm.

Am I going in the right direction?

Find the warm water. Could be shallow, could be the shoreline that the wind is blowing to.
Politicians and diapers need to be changed for the same reason

Usually, shallow water on the windblown side of the lake in combination with the most direct sun rays is a good place to start.

keep an eye on wind this time of year several days before you go especially if it is sunny out.  If the wind stays the same direction (lets say out of the south) for several days with sun, look for shallow bays and channels on the North side of the lake.  The wind will keep the warming water in the backs of those channels and bays.  I would fish with small ice jigs under a small float until the water gets into the low 50's.  A fly rod with a black ant wet fly can be deadly too.

If I was you I would ask your uncle Joe to go fishing with you. I hear he is a excellent pan fisherman and taught you what you need to know about fishing, drinking beer, and a little bit about the ladies. I hear he is going to the Blue-Gold game on Saturday but he will be available on Sunday. Maybe he can take you to Banabys after fishing too.

Yes it does look like a good spot. Going to be a little later than normal this year. Anyone have the approximate water temp for lakes in valpo?
