What is this fish?
« on: Nov 10, 2004, 07:25 AM »
This was found dead in a freshwater lake in New Jersey and we have never seen one before. Any ideas on what it is? The plastic bag can fit a 5-gallon pail in it so it's a big fish, I'm stumped.

It appears to be a Pacu, a vegetarian relative of the piranha.  They are popular in with aquarium owners and get quite large, so much so that it probably out grew the tank and the owner released it into the wild.  They are sensitive to colder temperatures as are piranha so they won't last long in cool water temperatures.

Thanks FB, looks like you nailed it. I just looked up Paco and found it's also called a freshwater pompano.
