What is it?
« on: May 07, 2005, 11:03 AM »
Well, I was scaling a big rocky cliff to fish a stream today, when I came upon this little booger.
What kind of salamander is he? Lungless? I've never seen one like him.

It not jack in the pulpit...looks like red  trillium (aka Wake Robin) to me.  Very nice pic.
I bet that salamander would make good bait

I dunno the name of the little guy but there are tons of them here in Maine. If threatened they will "drop their tails"

Are they all that tiny? in SD we see much larger specimens like a ft long. In AL they were real small like that  but in MS there were some that weighed 3-4#, just freaky looking things. I dont know what they were but just ootie. Lots of lizards in the south also, kinda cool.

The little critter is prolly a red-backed salamander, Plethodon cinereus.  Pretty common in NYS.  There is also a "lead-backed" phase, where they are grey with lighter speckling.

Those guys are very common in Ontario, I use to catch them all the time as a kid, scared the crap out of me everytime the tail came off.

Thats about the size of them up here as well, A FOOT ALONG? that would scare me more then the tail falling off

We have some geckos out here outside my house. They can get fairly big like 6 or 7", I'm sure they get bigger though.
