Little update. My son is super happy with the chip carving knives I gifted him. They're a huge step up from what he was using.
Next up is the segment cutting fixture. I've been interested in segmented turning for some time. Making segmented rings accurately and repeatedly is no small task. I'm 85% complete on a fixture system for cutting these pieces.
Took time out to remodel our master bathroom. A long overdue project.
Think I should go back to work. I need the rest.

Been working on a fixture to cut exact segments to glue up and turn on the lathe.
The results
The setup!
I can't take credit for the fixture design or method. It's widely known as the "Wedgie Sled". A simple piece of genius from a seasoned woodworker and artist. The possibilities are endless.
Anyway, it really works well. A bit of fine tuning and I'll be off to the races. Builidng it was complex and interesting.
So many elements to consider.
The process reinforces my assertion that all humans should be adept in math, geometry and trigonometry. These disciplines are useful every day of our lives.
Nothing better than exercising an aging brain.

I've only seen a few really good tile guys in my time. Didn't know that's what you do. There's a lot of skill in that work.

Nice ornaments Rg, turning the little bird on the perch must be tricky being so small. Do you have a special tool for turning them.

Something up there usually works.
I'll use whatever is in my hand most times. Skew, spindle gouge, bowl gouge.....doesn't really matter. Much of what I do on these little ornaments is done with a 3/8" bowl gouge with a traditional 45 degree grind. It's all about what you're comfortable using.
Ed, the natural ones are gonna be $10. I'll be doing some fine finished pieces that will be $20 ....plus first class mail.

Some pics of this year's offerings.
No two are alike. Depends on the piece of wood in the lathe.

Thanks! They're fun to make. I give some to the girls at work. Always good for a big hug.

Well, in the midst of turning 20 bird house ornaments for an order and a snowman, I turned out a garden dibber for a friend at work.
Have to say, I'm happy to be back in "turning season".
And, to the recipients of the other items, all is progressing nicely.
