Used to be. Like everything else in NY, they changed it.

hey i  got a  great idea  lets  cut the  limit of bluegills in  half   raise the length of  crappies to 9 inches... totally  confuss  everyone  on trout limits   then  raise the  limit of walleyes  and open the  season early  so  we   knock the walleye population  down then  we  can  fix that .....state  employees  know   job security ... our state  sucks

Good luck to all on the opener, I probably won't make it out until the afternoon but not going to miss it. A little trivia...On average over the past 20 years, the new walleye opener on May 1 is 3.25 days earlier than the traditional 1st Saturday in May opener. Twice in the last 20 years, May 1 fell on the first Saturday.

Years ago when I first started fishing for walleyes in NY the season was May 1 to March 1. Then somebody got the bright idea to change it to the first Saturday in May. Now its back to May 1 like it had been for many years. I fish Lake Erie and they usually don't start biting good till mid to late May so either way doesn't really affect my walleye fishing anyway. I'll give the new panfish regulations a year or two to see how they "pan" out. If they don't produce the desired results in the next couple years I'll send the DEC a nastygram.

I think I have only fished opening day 2 or 3 times in the past 15 or 20 years. Won't be out this year. That may change went the 1st falls on a M-F....h2l
