Haven’t seen any perch reports ,just wondering if any one has tried. Is it going to be a crazy year on that lake like it has around here
-
I've Ben asking around with all my charter buddies and they has all said they haven't seen anyone on the perch grounds . And that Everytime it would get to be right conditions we get a big north blow and messes things up
-
I am hoping that the first part of July the perch will be around. Till them I will make some money. Wanted to go today but the weather called for rain all weekend. That is the way mother nature changes. Now it is nice and all my partners have plans. Oh well, guess it is time to cut the grass. LOL
-
Last year but June 21st I was catching them .but we also had alot different weather last yr too . It has Ben such a mild yr with temps .
-
Thanks for all the replies,I have perch fever and the small lakes around me are way to busy with skiers and pleasure boats to chase them .Hopefully July will settle weather patters down and bring them in
-
I hear that ! I've been ready since they moved back deep last yr ! Nothing like a lake perch dinner with some home made fried and slaw ;D
-
Leave my south end Gold alone Al lol.
-
That is north 2 u, d**n yankee.
-
Lol, I'm south of 10 and your north of 10 lol, whos the Yankee.
-
Lol, I'm south of 10 and your north of 10 lol, whos the Yankee.
To all of those who live north of the river. (that is the talk from yonder). Hopefully, there will be enough of that gold to share with all who go for them this year. It would be nice to stock some in the freezer. Haven't had any in freezer for a few years. This warm weather should help. 80's for the next couple weeks should bring them closer to shore. GET READY. LOL
-
Just got my first report. Limit of perch from Michigan City in 28 fow. IT HAS STARTED. I cant get out till next weekend. Go get them guys, the lake looks beautiful... If it gets too hot you could always jump in...
-
Seen a limit out of Portage area yesterday as well
-
Thanks Bishop ! I will be after them Saturday and Sunday if weather lets me
-
Anyone strike it rich yesterday???
-

Water temp went from 72 yesterday to 67 today. Nothing marked at all to the east everything seems to be west In the 30's . No big pods yet gonna be a bit before it goes full bore but it's a start and feels good to be on the big lake !!! I'll post pictures when I get home

Both are producing fish just look for the crowds
-
North blow. Everyone I know struck out
-
North blow ? It was only a 4 mph the lake was about a sheet of glass both Saturday and sunday
-
40 sunday , 8 to 14 inch, alot of 10 to 12 inchers, 3 boats some did better and 1 was very close.
Only 1 monday afternoon for a few hours in a different location.
E and N. E. winds are great.
Sunday was a great day.
-
You fishing out of Michigan city wallin? Never been before and I'm thinking about trying it.
-
Sunday we fished out of St Joe, still a long ride in a boat to where we found them.
Monday afternoon we fished New Buffalo and only found 1 but were exploring, we marked alot.
Mich City area has been doing good also, every day is different for them perch but with a south wind its a great time regard less.
Had friends that got 20 out of Mich City area yesterday, but have friends out of St Joe and Mich City this morning and everything is slow so far today.
Good luck , watch the wind and the weather and you'll have a great time.
-
Never been before but have a bigger boat now so was thinking about trying. A little over 2.5hrs to Michigan City from home. I have a buddy fishing there this morning but it was slow when I talked to him also.
-
He's doing better now!

Nice mess, looks like you went out of MC also. You're right about the depth, I would have never guessed they could be caught in 5 fow!
-
Thanks , and yes Michigan city and I didn't get them that shallow . Shallow enough for this time of yr
-
Going in the morning. Lets see if they are still snapping!
-
WTG SPOOLED, You are making me jealous. Good luck Mike, let us know how they are. I hope to be on the water Saturday. Wouldn't you know if the winds are suppose to change out of the north. I don't like to take my boat out on north winds. I have been disappointed many times by launching the boat only to find out that once hitting the actual lake it was much too rough for me and my boat. I like 1 foot or less. Call me crazy, but cautious. Will have to listen to noaa's to watch the wave action. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Going out from the ditch early tomorrow. Anyone else going in am? Usually fish out from Michigan City. Thought I would try something a bit different. Hope to find some early before I get chased off the wATER CAUSE OF THE WINDS.

THE ARMADA WAS IN FULL FORCE TODAY. EVERYONE WAS HAMMERING THEM. WE GOT OVER 50 IN A COUPLE HOURS. KEPT 30, MOSTLY 9 TO 11 WITH ONLY A COUPLE LARGER.10 TO 12 FEET WAS WHERE THE FISH WERE. HOPE THEWINDS LIE DOWN CAUSE I WANT TO BE BACK TOMORROW. WHO ELSE DID GOOD THERE TODAY. MY GUESS IS ALL WHO WENT GOT THEIR FISH. HAVEN'T SEEN THEM IN THIS THICK IN YEARS.
-
Hard to believe that there hasn't been any other posts on todays outing.BE VERRY VERRY QUIET....(SAYS ELMER FUDD)…..

Glad you got them! I haven't made it up yet, maybe next week.

Ppl are quiet, because the "armada" is bad enough already.
Did you see how many ppl were being stupid when the thick fog rolled in??
Imagine blowing up forumns and bringing out everyone and thier mother or brother.

MUST OF LEFT BY THEN. THINK I PICKED UP AROUND 8 OR SO.
-
LOOKS LIKE THE LAKE WILL LAY DOWN LATER TODAY. HOPE THE BLOW DIDNT PUSH THE PERCH OUT DEEP. IF ANYONE MAKES IT OUT TODAY, GOOD LUCK. HAS ANYONE LAUNCHED FROM MICHIGAN CITY? CURIOUS IF THE PERCH ARE BEING CAUGHT BY NUMBERS THERE AS WELL. MY GUESS IS THEY ARE EVERYWHERE. WITH THE WEATHER I KNEW THAT PORTAGE WAS A CLOSER RUN TO SAFETY IF THE LAKE TURNS QUICK. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME I LAUNCHED IN PORTAGE IN YEARS AND IT WAS SWEET.

SO, PLEASE TELL. HOW WERE PEOPLE BEING STUPID WITH THE FOG THAT ROLLED IN. WHAT TIME WAS THIS? ALWAYS LOOKING TO HEAR A GOOD STORY.
-
Went out on Erie once on Charter Boat. Thick fog. Just missed a guy in a rowboat out at least a mile and we were going slow due to the poor visibility.
What an idiot!
-

If you dont have a radar. No need to be up on plane when in thick fog. I will just leave it at that.
-
Just wondering if anyone was out today and if it’s worth my two hour drive .The limit isn’t the problem I just don’t want the skunk.
-
From what I hear its picked up a little.
Going to try it myself tomorrow
-
Went out today and was not in a rush. Had several little things to tie up here at home. Got on the water about 10:30 out of Portage and headed east to the area in front of the Indiana Dunes State Park pavilion. Fished as shallow as 8' and with the Ipilot down, worked my way out to 50' with nothing. Mosied back to the doughnut area and repeated the pattern with the same results-- nothing. Fished some old memories on top of the reef and the trough at the reef with nothing and ended up back at the moutn of the ditch. Called my son and he told me the other day, he did well in 14' of water in front of Ogden Dunes. I tried it and skunked again and then realized an old man like me had been sitting out a ways the entire day. So, I went the same distance out and about 1000 yards west of him and it was 51' of water. I fished it for about 90 minutes and ended up with 9. Two were true keepers at 10" and the rest needed to be stretched. Again, when you are pulling fish from 50' of water, you're keeping what you catch as they come up with their bladders/bellies in their mouths. So, I was grateful for 9 and needed to be home about 5. Overall, a great day to be on the water. Really appreciate the bimini top on my boat as the older I get, the less I like to fry in the sun. There was also a healthy crop of pesky flies buzzing around. I need to put a fly swatter on the boat. The fishing should improve tomorrow with the weather being a bit more stable for a longer period of time...

Nice report, and the search goes on. ;)

I hear you on those flies with the white spot on their backs. I call them nuclear flies. They bite worse than a horse fly, going thru blue jeans and socks like you had nothing on at all. I tried the different types of misquito sprays and found out the only one that WORKS, is the 100 percent deet. I know a lot of people dont like to use it, but, it works trust me. I dont leave home without it. Last Saturday we were lucky no flies. I think they come out in the later hours. We had left by 8;30 am.
-
On the charter boats we take a rag and spray it with fly spray you would use on a horse and it works pretty good. Or if you have on board water Dawn dish soap helps. We wash the back deck down with dawn very once and awhile and they stay away
-
Slez has a sun block lotion. Also has a bug repellent in it. Works wonders! Like $9 a tube. Cant remember the name of it, but it was in a white tube with peach/pink labeling on it.
Stuff seriously worked wonders, been on many trips guys getting tore up and i didnt have a bug on me, everyone asked to borrow some once we realized what was going on.
-
17 today out of M.C., hot and nasty.
Nothing big
-
16 or 17 out of Portage today in 50' of water... A few nice 10" but most were 8-9 inchers -- indeed, very warm and fished with a 91 year old friend that loves to perch fish. Today was a good day to have a bimini top...
-
With the winds coming from the north the next couple of days I am hoping that come Saturday the lake is back the way it was a week ago, with perch scattered everywhere close to shore. It is the only day I could get on this week, hope it is productive. I am guessing the Armada will be out. LOL.....
-
So what does the census report. Do you think that with the winds from the north would move the perch into deeper waters. Or, would you think that by Saturday they will be shallow again. I am inclined to believe that we need 3 or 4 good days with a south wind to get them settled down. Do you think maybe try fishing elsewhere for something different or just wait till next weekend to hope for another good perch outing. Just wondering that others are thinking?????
-
The north winds bring cold water and waves . And when the water temp goes from 74 to 66 they disappear. And they do t like to get beat up in the shalllow water by the waves we have Ben getting. They had small craft advisory today and rip current warnings. I have full intentions in being out Saturday but not now. I think it will be a waist. And I'm not one that likes to clean 7 to 10 in perch . Because at the depth of 50 ' where they are now makes their air bladders come out there mouths and there for you have to keep everything you catch . Jsut my 2 cents
-
Would encourage you to enjoy another lake this Saturday. I fished two days this week after last weekend north spell and caught fish but as the previous post states, they were in 50' of water and not real active. There are plenty of options to go elsewhere and maybe mix it up a bit and try a body of water you have been thinking about but just have not taken the time to explore. You know you are gonna have fun where ever you go...
-
Yep what he said , my wife is flying out of town for a week . And me and my oldest boy are gonna be unsupervised for the time being :o I plan on fishing my butt off ! Batteries are charging . Just the first service on the boat and got some new gear for my birthday! I told my son plan on fishing everyday for the next week lol

Good 4 u. enjoy yourself. My son and I are going to try it Saturday as well. Think we r going to hit the dead sea. Buddy caught 5 eyes last weekend and a 16 1/2 inch crappie. (nice fish). Havent been this year, HAVE 2 TRY.
-
Looks the like north blow wasn't as bad as it could have been.
https://glbuoys.glos.us/45170
As of 8 AM CST Friday morning, its 71 on the surface and 70 degrees all the way down to 20 feet. Then 62 degrees at 36 feet and 55 degrees at 43 feet.
Water column is set up ok for them to be in that 20-35 foot depth range... only question is that has it settled enough from the recent unstable conditions to let them move back in and get set up
I'm guessing by the weekend it could be ok
-
Probably trying it tomorrow. Only one way to find out.
-

Good luck Mike, Let me know how u did.
-
ANY REPORTS FROM TODAY? IF I DIDNT HAVE TO WORK TOMORROW I WOULD TRY MAYBE????? IF ANYONE DID ANY GOOD TODAY. LOL
-
Slow today out of the ditch. Picked away at fish, but size wasnt tablefare.
Marked monster pods of fish in 28 foot of water. Lots of debris marked in shallow 10-15 foot.
Picked a couple dinks in 50 foot. Tried other areas 40-52 to the west with nothing to show or marked.
Tomorrow is an east wind.....
This next week looks like weather to fire the perch up again. Now just a waiting game, couple days, go time again.
-
That is kind of what I expected. Glad I decided to change it up.
-
Buddy got a good mess out of MC with a couple pushing 14. I hope to make it up next weekend for my first trip ever.
-
Whose going tomorrow ,I took the day off ,marine forecast shows south wind to night and tomorrow morning.Waves 1 ft or less .I know it’s 50/50 on the bite but I have yellow fever and need to get a cure .If any one was out over the weekend and has a report please tell and let me know
-
If I get out of work in time for the evening bite I will be out
-
Saturday no good at portage.
Seen/heard mich city was decent sunday.
Buddy was out of portage today, got some fish and seen a few boats rippin em.
He had to go, too rough for his kid.
-
Well I was going tomorrow but wouldn’t you know it family matters oh well it’s supposed to be stormy in the morning any way.Ill keep trying and or dreaming
-
Talked to my neighbor yesterday and he hammered them yesterday morning. Said they were good ones. His daughter got a 16 incher right out of the ditch the other day. Don't have any strategic info as to where or how deep.

-
😡😡😡never fails it’s always something that gets in the way of me getting up there when they are biting
-
Lake looked very nice last two days. Suppose to blow out of the north tomorrow, then it looks good for the weekend.
-
Great conditions out there today! I know we're talking perch on here but I took the kayak out for 3 hours and smallmouth/largemouth fished all around the breakwalls and lighthouse pier. Fishing was bad and I got rained on a little bit at the end but it was nice getting the kayak on the big pond. Only landed one fish and it was a rock bass...

Blowing out of the north at 5 mph. Thats not going to hurt anything. Fish were on fire today when u located the school.
-
Gonna try and go again tomorrow
-
Are they in shallow or deep?
-
Both
-
Anyone make it out today? Another beautiful day. Next few days it is going to be H O T...…. Get out early and get in the air con. I am hoping to be on the water at 5 on Saturday. Hope to be done by 10.
-
Limits in 2 hours today.
Will be going saturday as well. Not going at 5 or 6 a.m. though...
-
Will it be worth the 2 hr drive Saturday, marine forecast says 2 ft waves and south to southwest wind
-
I would say so , by the time I get fuel and I usually takes me about an hour and a half and I'll probably go Saturday and Sunday the fish are there to be had
-
Yes, u will be good to go for saturday with the forecast at hand. South winds 10-15 mph. Ur not going to have 2 foot waves on the perch grounds with where they are located.
Sunday looks like your good till about 3-4 p.m., if sundays forecast sticks true.
Feel free to p.m. me with any details you may want, ive been fishing the perch hard. I plan on going saturday also
-
Be on the water by 6. Who is going also?
-
I'll be out , if I don't get called into work tonight
-
Gotta work. Maybe sunday
-
I got some room left in the freezer, I'll be there in the pac.
-
I'll be in a wet lands camo side councel Lund feel free to say hey tomorrow
-
On the way out the ditch there were 3 big boats coming back in. Saying there were big rollers out there. Knowing that I would only be a few hundred yards out I had to try it since I paid 21 dollars 4 bait and another 10 to launch. Within the first 2 minutes I had a fish on. I was very concerned with the rollers. Had to b 4 footers. So I just made sure I was trolling into them so as to not catch one over my transom. GAME OVER IF THAT HAPPENED. We ended up boating over 50 in 2 1/2 hours. Kept 30. They were larger on average this week. Calling for north winds to come in today in the afternoon. Have to watch NOAA to c if tomorrow is doable. First 1 getting bait today. When we left there was over 65 boats fishing in the general area. Fish were everywhere. The best depth 4 us was 16 to 18 fow. GET YA SUM.
-
>:(Got halfway up there and got a call from home. Its just not meant to be for me this year.Happy to hear of limits and size .Hopefully still be able to get up there before the big fish come in and completly shut perching off
-

North wind the next 3 days 15-25 mph. Bye-bye perch.
-
You got the rite ! Everytime it gets good it BLOWS 😤 ..... But managed 47 nice ones today ! And was off the water by 11 was nice to get out
-
Your reports are awesum but they are killing me.I hope they return so I can try again with out any issues from home.
-
ANYONE ON THE WATER THIS AM? LOOKS LIKE THE WINDS R CALM BY ME. I KNOW THEY ARE CALLING FOR SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY LATER TODAY. WONDERING IF THERE IS ENOUGH WINDOW TO GET A FEW TODAY.
-
North wind the next 3 days 15-25 mph. Bye-bye perch.
HOPING, THAT BY THE NEXT WEEKEND, WITH THREE DAYS OF SOUTH WINDS THAT BY SATURDAY THEY WILL BE BACK. I HAVE 2 WORK ON SUNDAY. KEEPING MY FINGERS CROSSED.
-
What size boat is needed out there on calm days? Would you be pushing it with a 16' deep modified v john boat?
-
I have seen 14 foot John boats out there on calm south wind days. This lake is rougher than all other great lakes and the oceans. I was told this first hand by a tug boat captain who has been all over the world. I have a 16 deep v with 40 horse and I am still over cautious. I like the lake to have less than 2 foot waves 4 me 2 b comfortable. Just me, I dont push it....
-
It's not just the waves that you have to watch out for the bigger boats and their wakes too ! The big pleasure boaters do not care if your anchored and how small you are . I've seen boats rolled over by big boats that didn't pay attention . An or had the common sense to put the nose of the boat at a 45 to the wake coming at them. If you go just use common sense and watch for others because they don't always watch for you

Here is a few pictures form Saturdays catch
-
Jeaoluos jeaolous jeaolous! Fine catch right there,I hope that’s a sign the perch are on the rebound or at least a good year hatch from years past
-
From what I have seen the perch are doing great caught some big ones this year and it ain't over yet. Hopefully next weekend they'll be back in
-
The lake is churning now like crazy.
-
Just can't seem to make it up there. Much of a chance the perch will go Saturday with all this north wind? Still looking for my first trip up there.
-
In my opinion I wouldn't bother . Three and a half days of north winds . We will need more then two days or southern winds to bring them back in shallow. I'm sure the perch will be there Saturday but they're going to be scattered and I would say 40 + feet. Hopefully we don't get anymore big blows from Thursday on and by mid next week to next weekend they will be back where they was this past weekend
-
Thanks for the advice! I thought that would most likely be the case. I'd like to catch a few on my first trip ever and I don't want to have a bad taste in my mouth after almost 6 hours of round trip driving.
-
I hear ya , that's a drive ! I'd say if weather is perfect from Thursday till Sunday guys may be able to get a few . If I hear anything promising from any of my charter buddies I'll keep ya posted . It's a blast when they are on fire !!
-
Thanks, I appreciate it!
-
It's not just the waves that you have to watch out for the bigger boats and their wakes too ! The big pleasure boaters do not care if your anchored and how small you are
Or if you're in a kayak...

Don't even get me started on inconsiderable *holes out there. I stay off of a nearby Wawasee for that reason. It just raises my blood pressure.
-
Yep gotta love when there is 50 + boats anchored or drifting and some snow flake comes hauling butt threw everyone or the jet skeirs !

Oh heck I've had them so close they ran over my lines. And had people purposely strafe me because they don't want me anchored where I'm at. The 200 foot rule for distance from shoreline for skiers gets totally ignored.

My dads uncle took a guy off of his skies with a cane pole once out on the mississinewa. I guess this guy kept buzzing them while they were anchored up fishing for crappie. Uncle Lester finally had enough and drilled him with a cane pole the next time he came past. This was back in the day before all the pc crap nowadays. He saw a problem and fixed it.
-
Ah the good old days! You can't get away with correcting things like that nowadays.
-
Lmao that's awsome , and no you can't . Hell defending yourself will get you thrown in jail now a days . But I'll take my chances 😉
-
The lake laid down today. I am praying that by Saturday all is well.
-
Ah the good old days! You can't get away with correcting things like that nowadays.
Fished with a guy who spoiled 100# test on a pole with a big bobber. If boats and skiers buzzed to close to us he would cast far enough out so the boat would run over his line and rap up in the prop. Boat dead in the water and we would move to our next spot.
-
What’s everyone’s opinion will the perch be back in Saturday with the south winds
-
Heard there was a bunch out today. I havent gotten any reports. ANYONE??????
-
I'm doubtful that Saturday will be successful in the shallow Waters but I have been wrong before my guess was going to be Sunday maybe they would be back in the 30's
-
By the time them perch get set back up in good schools, the kings will be coming in and push em right out. Lol.
Should be some kings fairly close after that north blow! Keep that in mind if wanting to get out and change the pace.
-
Heading up to Michigan city tomorrow evening for 3 to 4 days...hope to get some perch...any pointers are appreciated.
-
Bite was good in 35-40 feet between Burns Harbor and Michigan City today
Should be excellent by Saturday. I was expecting it to take longer for the fishing to recover...buoy temps look great again already

Thanks MC... I've fished a handful of times up there...appreciate the help.
-
I heard some was caught today too , I'll be out Saturday
-
Anyone find any shallow today? Hope they are close and stacked.
-
Finally made the trip, but the big ones were no where .Could of filled my limit numerous times with 7to8 inches. It was pretty ruff .If anyone stayed for the evening bite maybe the big ones might of come along.I had to head back at noon. Was still good to get out and fish something diifferent .Noticed quite a few skamania steelhead That were dead in the harbor.I wonder if they made a run up river and the heat wave took a few out.
-
The west winds were tough today. Started out by the doughnut with everyone else. Only saw a couple boats catching them. ALL SMALL. So went to the ditch mouth. Started picking them up in 30 feet. Kept 30 a lot of sorting. Stayed till around 11. Need a couple more days with a south wind to bring them back to shore. FUN FUN FUN. Ended up with 6 doubles today. As usual, the largestfish of the day flipped off at the boat 14+. LOL
-
Yea I had quite a few doubles but small .Oh to be only 1 hr away and have the big lake at your back door
-
We fished in front of my baldy... caught some small ones but no keepers... didn't see many around us doing well either... hoping for a better day tomorrow... not sure where to go out of yet...
-
Heard it was a tough bite, going to try tomorrow.
-
Everyone I talked to today said they was all small.and if you notice the boats was scattered from 25 to 45 fow . The fish are too scattered rite now usually all the boats fish the same depth in a giant line . When the boats are scattered so are the fish but it does mean that they are moving back in.and will be anytime before they start to get into the big pods
-
Wallin, did you find any today?
-
lots of small fish today sorted for 13
most should have been throw backs but decided not to feed the sea gulls. :o
-
Wallin, did you find any today?
Fished from around 8am to 2pm and it was slow.
Lots of dinks, I didn't keep anything under 9 inchs I guess.
Ice Cleat fished with me a got a few nicer fish, he had 9 or 10 I believe.
Nice breeze kept it cooler all day, 29 to 30 ft is where we found the bigger fish.
Talked to other boats that got limits but I only keep smaller fish if they swallowed the hook.
To hard to clean lol. Fat head minnows are what i use and throw in a few crappie minnows.

-
Heres mostly what I use, i have lots of them, I just found these T-Turn and I caught lots of fish on these yesterday.
The other rigs are mostly from Bass pro in the crappie area made by the name on the package. Theres tons of drop shot rigs I use mostly for drifting using the dead stick lazy guy method, lol.

Perch seem to have just started and now the north blow can’t win😡
-
Perch started over a month ago now , and yep that's how it works every yr never fails . Get it while u can
-
Everyday is a gamble when perching.
Here today gone tomorrow.
Some days you find some bigger ones some days there all dinks.
My freezers looking good and thats what counts lol.
Just gotta get out there and try when weather permits, its always a
good day when your on the water, fish are a bonus.
Fish-ON
-
Question ? My personal preference on perch is to eat them skin on.of course descaled . To me they taste so much better that way and cook better . BUT scaling is a mess and a pain in the butt ! That being said I'm considering buying a descaler ..... Any of you use on on perch ect.. and what's your thoughts on them are they worth the money . I figured as much as I perch fish the big lake it might be a good investment.... And when I say descaler I mean a fish tumbler
-
I try to keep them big enough to fillet.
No skin for me is my preferred method.
It'll work I'm sure if you want to do that much work.
There good any way you fix them.
-
To me I prefer even the big ones skin on . I've heard some guys say they use the slick skin scaler and they work great and I we heard other say no..... I usually clean 40 plus at a time by myself so if it is worth the 230 bucks I may invest into one of it's gonna save me the extra mess time and stabbed fingertips then it may be worth it
-
I have always found that the skin side has a hard time holding the batter.
-
Fished again Sunday, managed a meal for 4 of us at camp. Had to move east of where we were fihi g to get them. Most came in the later part of the day. Will try again... came home Monday morning with the bad weather moving in.
-
Mich City boat races show this weekend.
Crazy house so no fishing THERE for me.
-
Ben a north wind all week and gonna continue threw Saturday perch fishing is toast and I would be willing to be the race gets cancelled
-
The tumblers I've seen either turn the meat to mush right on the bone or you had to finish scaling anyway. Table spoon is what I use but I don't do forty at a time.
-
No fishing this weekend and probably not next. Hope the week after brings them back. Need to put more in freezer.
-
The tumblers I've seen either turn the meat to mush right on the bone or you had to finish scaling anyway. Table spoon is what I use but I don't do forty at a time.
Ya I've heard that if you don't pull this out at the perfect time that can happen . A buddy of mine bought a little plastic deal to scale them and he said it works great. Makes a mess but works good . Maybe I'll give that a try first
-
Back before we learned to filet them we would use a skinner to peel off the skin, and when cleaning the crappie we had nailed old pop bottle caps onto a handle. This worked really well. Just gave them scales a real fly, they were everywhere. Had to do the cleaning outside. Have you noticed the batter doesn't stay on the skin side of your fish????
-
I noticed that , but that's how I like it jsut perfect to me
-
According to noaa, the lake is not too rough. Maybe someone will venture out and hook a few. LET US KNOW...
-
Pretty neat fishogger , thanks for sharing that
-
We had a great day, took awhile for me and Ice Cleat to find some bigger fish but we found them. Probably
caught close to 80 fish between us 2 but alot of sorting. Always do your own weather check, never depend on others.
It was a good day to be on the water.

-
Good job ! I would have never guess they would be back that soon !!
-
Way to go...thanks for the pics. I hope to make another trip this yesr.
-
Looking at the weather I may go back Monday for a day trip... we will see what the wind does.
-
I'm going sunday, may get a little bumpy tho.
-
I will be going out from the ditch. A short distance it the lake gets choppy.
-
How did anyone do out there today????
-
Friend got 12 keepers out of NB.
Were trying it again tomorrow.
It might get a little ruff.
-
Do you think the northern winds will shut the fish down for Monday? Forecast looks great for Monday but I didn't know what the wind Sunday would do to the fish.
-
Hoping all those cigar boats from the races in Michigan City stay far away from the ditch area today. NEED PERCH, NOT WAKE....

Should be fine till afternoon. I HOPE.... Would like to be done by 10:30.

Lake was like ice this am. Started off slow then we found a massive pod. Ended up with 24. Couldn't find the pod again to claim our limit. After looking for over 1 hour and only boating another 1 fish we pulled the plug. Beautiful day 2 b out.

started out all nice then the smaller fish came in.

Long day, 68 keepers for 3 of us today. Yea that lake was slick this morning. Beautiful day.
28 to 30 ft with that spot lock was the ticket. Grandson got 2 perch over 14 inchs.
Sorted thru lots of small fish, used 8 dozen minnows.
Al did you go out of N B today?

No stayed by ditch. Only fished for a few hours. 31 foot 4 me was best. Had plenty of bait to chum afterwards. A shame throwing away at that cost. Need to find a stainless tank to keep minnows alive thru heat.
-
Nice job wallin... sick kid kept my grounded...looking at the bouy info on line sounds like a similar day today.. watchung for may e tomorrow.
-
NO WINDS TODAY OUGHT TO BRING THOSE PERCH CLOSER TO SHORE.
-
Had friends get 33 out of N B today from 11 to about 4 I guess, heard of nice fish taken around the
M C area today also.
Wed were hoping to get out again.

What do you think the wave height will be with a NW wind tomorrow?
-
They are calling for light and variable winds tomorrow. Waves should be around a foot, maybe less

Depends on speed of the wind . My weather says 5 to 10 if that's all its gonna be should have nothing more then 1 to 1.5 foot chop . I use Michigan city buoy .com it shows picture and wave height temps ect....
-
Ya I was looking at that ... early w and wsw... I have a bass tracker and was hoping to get on with fair weather...
-
You'll be fine. Waves will be great. Only 1.4 footers right now, plus:

It says "calm" from 9 PM until 1 AM
And the wind is under 3 MPH from now until 8 AM, not cracking 5 mph until afternoon
-
Well I'm gonna go for it
-
Should be great tomorrow and sat and sun too.
1/2 ft to 1 ft, north breeze always feels good out there.
I'll be out there in a gray and blue Alumacraft.
Not sure yet where were starting east or west, just keep moving till you find them.
I love my spotlock.
Good Luck, I keep moving till I find a steady pod of fish that are biting.

Nice, you're killing me! Maybe I can make it up there next week. Not sure how many times I've said that.
-
Will it be good Saturday or Sunday with the north blow that’s coming in for a couple of days,I would like to find those quality fish too!😡
-
As long as the 15 mph they are calling for is as strong as it gets would should be good . Friday is only a 5 mph
-
Hoping to get back out Saturday.
-
Left the house early for the day trip to the big lake. After stopping for bait in Michigan city I changed directions and headed to NB since I already have an annual out of state for Michigan. Got on as the sun was only up a short time. Went out to 40fow banged 4 right off the bat' smallest being 10 1/2 . Then nothing...so I moved in to 32fow and hit 2 more quality 11s. Then nothing for at least an hr... moved around d a bit and hit a couple 9s dbl... made a mark on the helix and proceeded to do a controlled drift with my trolling motor. Drifted off course and hit a couple more and made a mark. After another mark on the helix I had a little triangle on the screen and I pinned down on them. Came home with 25... kept about 5 9s to make the limit...top fish of the day was 11 3/4. Good day and still made the 2.5 hr drive home in ti.e for football practice.

-
Good report, glad you got a mess!
-
Great day out, good bite in the morning but it slowed , lots of searching and sorting.
3 of us ended up with 28 keepers. We fished Mich City east.
24 to 32 was our best range.

Glad you guys got some... lake was perfect.
-
Curios as to what bait most of you use for bait on lk Michigan.I always use small shiners. And maybe that’s why I don’t do very well .Would just plain fat heads be the best?
-
Would the white meat from the tail of crawfish work well? I've heard guys use soft crawls but they are too rich for my blood.
-
I use shiners and fatheads from cheifs in Michigan city . And never have a issue catching perch with them
-

In my experience, and I think conventional wisdom as well, shiners usually outfish fatheads considerably
-
You just have to ask yourself do you want to pay 5 bucks or 20? Eeinghburghs in Demotte at 1 dollar a dozen or 1.25 for fatheads. Cheapest around. I used to buy by the pound when Marvels was in Business. Think they were like 8.50 to 12 dollars. Enough for 2 boats and then some. 12 to 15 dozen.... I agree baby roaches or shiners will catch more fish. AND THEY DO LIKE THE LARGER ONES. I WAS SURPRISED. Anyone get out today?
-
I know a guy who catches perch in Canada every year with twisler red...haha... I used the flat heads at chiefs as well and had no problem getting bit.

I use the bigger walleye Fat Heads and do fine I think.
Some times i get a couple dozen of the small Fat Heads.

I will be there just out from the mouth a few hundred yards west 25 30 fow alumacraft with 40 merc. smokin a cigar. Should be on water by 5;30.
-
Fatheads will catch you fish.
Baby roaches will catch you quality. Hand over fist.
-
Will the Washington ok ramp be open Sunday, that’s probably when I will be up there
-
Good luck to you guys hitting the big lake today.
-
TOUGH BITE. Only ended up with 5, all quality. 28 to 31 fow. Fished almost 5 hours. Plenty people enjoying the speed.
-
Was Washington pk launch open,I don’t like giving the marina money to launch
-
In my low experience fishing them up there... my helix 7 is my buddy... it made all the difference for me while drifting.
Hope you still enjoyed the trip abishop

Was up there last weekend. Went to the zoo. The speed boats were practicing before the race on Sunday. CROWDED.....The launch is free? Thought the only free launch was the Hammond Marina. If Washington Park is free, I think you still have to pay to park??? At least I had to. Correct me if I am wrong.

Always a good day to be out. I think the chinook are coming close to shore. Last week I saw a few dead ones belly up. The perch are probably on their way out to deeper waters. IMHO. Only marked 2 pods all morning covering a lot of water.
-
Out now got some really big ones and counting .....

Interesting... I marked some large fish 5 to 7' off the bottom last week...wondered what they were... they don't feed on perch do they?
-

I was thinking later in the day may be better. What depth is working best 4 u?
-
When I launch at Washington pk I’m there when no one is collecting money and no one when I leave,am I missing something
-
I was all over Bishop from 24 to 38 . And yes if no one is at the gate they can't charge you to launch at the beach. BUT they start collecting at 7 am . At some point here soon the quit charging for the season . But I wanna say it was 25 or 27 to launch a boat there . Unless you have a beach sticker
-
Well I’ll be out tomorrow cost not a factor at this point.Would just like to find some good fish.Marine forecast is south winds with 1 foot or less waves .Any one else going to chase or find some odd tomorrow,oh and will chiefs be open early tomorrow
-

Fished M C east today and it kicked my butt, worse day I had in over a month.
Small fish, no fish schools. Nice day on the water. Was a very early bite I'm told and I was at the marina at 6am.
Oh well Fish On, next time. I like the Tail Creek Marina.
-
Managed 6 nice perch today, very slow and fish were scattered.I would catch the nicer ones when there wasn’t even a mark on my locater go figure .About 5 dollars a fish with cost of trip but a day on the big lk is priceless
-
When does the perch fishing shut down up there?
-
I think real soon I was marking some huge returns on locater down about 20 ft in 32 ft depth of water.I would think they are something other than trash fish but I could be wrong.Wish I had under water camera
-

Don't assume anything . Once or twice I found the perch suspended in 30-40' off the pump house in St Joe. Salmon were slow and I heard a couple boats talking. Apparently when there is a good fly hatch the perch come up and feed on them. And they are very specific as to depth as shown on the graph. They won't come up or down much unless they are very active. Minnows worked for me but I imagine the flies hatching at some level and not moving much. It took me a while listening to the radio and the two cruisers talking to adjust my technique. I started out on or near bottom and came up to 18' to catch my first fish.
-
When does the perch fishing shut down up there?
The kings show be moving in befor too long and that usually makes the perch move out . And I have noticed it's Ben a solid perch bite for over a week now and the still are not in the low 20's yet. I'm thinking this is gonna be the last push before the skate out deep
-
Appreciate the insight... I'm new to al the chasing lake mi perch. It's been fun...I just hope I can get one more trip in this week.
-
So on my locater the 20 foot returns could of been perch schools. The echos were quite large which is why I was thinking something other than perch
-
The perch fishing usually remains good into Sept and Oct the last few years. In fact in 2016, 2017, and 2018 the best catch rates were Sept and Oct - better even than July or August. Just that very few people were fishing
Kings have very little to do with perch movement IMO
Once the lake turns over and then settles down a bit, the perch fishing can be incredible in Nov/Dec if you can get out. Just a matter of finding them, like always

I'm referring to them being in the 30 to 15 fow range ,. Some people don't care to catch perch in 50 and 60 fow. To when they are that far out perch season is over
-
I know why the people dont like to venture out to far. That lake can get rough very quick. I am one of them.
-
Any reports on perch lately?
-
Had a real good perch dinner last night does that count😁
-
Looks like a good weekend to chase them good luck to all who venture out after them ,hoping to have some good luck at 4 winds casino this weekend
-
So will this “@&&&@@“@@ing spill affect the perch derby in new buffalo this coming weekend.Im just disgusted with big corporations and what the state allows them to do and get away with .SLAP ON THE WRIST y’all have a nice day please don’t let it happen again
-
Perch Derby is on for sat, weathers looking great.
Come on out and enjoy and learn the it.
$10 for a 1 day license. Its a great time to learn other Perching guys in the area.

Waiting for the Official posting of all names but there were 15 boats that attended.
Biggest fish was 13 7/8 I believe , 2 - 2nd place winners with 13 3/4 the official posting with names will be out soon.
It was a good turnout. Big swells but fishable. Great time had by all. Fish were scattered most of the day. Water has really cooled off.

I want to thank everyone that came and fished the 10th annual Michiana Walleye Perch Derby. Congrats to Mark, Bill and Randy for catching the biggest perch @ 13-7/8 and 2nd place to teams of Mike & Jim and Tom and Joe both with a 13-3/4. Congrats also to Mark, Bill and Randy for the winning "BEST 3" total inches of 40-3/8. Great turn out of 15 boats and 37 fishermen and 1 fisherwoman. Weather wasn't the best but fish were caught.Hope to see everyone next year.

HOPEFULLY, WITH THE WARMER WEATHER AND THE SOUTH WINDS HAPPENING ALL NEXT WEEK, I JUST MIGHT HAVE TO TRY TO FIND SOME PERCH ONE MORE TIME, NEXT WEEKEND. PRAY THAT THEY STILL ARE HANGING AROUND???? WHO'S WITH ME????>?>?>?
-
have never been out on the big lake for pearch...every year i plan on going out one of the mills screw up the water.
-
Haven't heard A good report from a soul in weeks
-
they've been tearing them up by the state line up to New Buffalo all week. probably done for a bit now with the big north blow
-
Can I ask about how deep ?
-
Thinking by next weekend the lake will be normal and the bite will be on. (I HOPE)
-
You just have to hunt around for them big schools.
Usually 15 to 30 ft. look for the others boats.
They will be around awhile we all hope.
-
Oh I know how the perch game works . Just wandering depth they have Ben in .I don't mess with them last 35 fow . And I cant see them being in the teens anymore with the water temps dropping like they have Ben . Especially after these last few north blows
-
There were a decent amount of perch shallow last night in 10-20 feet
Hot weather and south winds... better get out while the getting's good! Fall will be here soon
-
Thanks for the info MC
-
GOOD LUCK 2 ALL OF YOU LUCKY GUYS WHO CAN GET THE GOLD ALL WEEK. I CANT GET ON THE WATER TILL SATURDAY. SAVE ME A FEW. POST REPORTS AND PICS FOR THOSE WHO SCORE AND CAN...THANK YOU

Time to chase gold! I should probably stay out east tomorrow right? Maybe launch Michigan City or does anyone think Portage and work east? Miss perchin something fierce, finally got a Lund so it’s on!
-
I would stay east. Michigan City has been better than Portage recently from what I've heard
-
Thank you kindly
-
Seen a few boats this afternoon on 249. Wondering how they did. Any reports?
-
Trying sat out of NB or MC if wind is bad.

Trying sat out of NB or MC if wind is bad.
Yes, same here. the winds aren't looking the best. Last night, there was a small craft advisory. We will see.
-
Looked like Saturday the winds will be low... sunday 10-11 ssw... that shouldn't be to bad for us small boats should it?
-
That storm made the lake roll a bit today. Didn’t go far and managed dinner and a sunburn. Beautiful morning if you dont mind surfing
-
I've been fooled more than once by mother nature so i always respect that big water and watch and check
the winds and waves. Besafe and find them perch, planning on NB but MC as a backup if them waves are to much, its showing 4ft swells overnight but smaller waves late morning. Just besafe and it should get better as the day goes.
Besafe and watch the winds and you'll be OK.
-
Things change by the minute out there that’s for sure. I was very impressed with the way my 17 ft boat handled but I guess being as wide as a Sea Ray doesn’t hurt. Just stayed close to port and the perch were right inside the mud line anyway.

Pretty windy today isn't it? How many did you end up with? What depth? Kind of thinking about waiting till next weekend. I am not as brave as some at my old age. LOL
-
Worked for them. They were in 15 to 20. Related to the mud line but we’re also scattered outside of it. They likes the 68 to 70 degree water
-
Was the lake rolling today? I decided to stay home. Possibly next Saturday. Depending on the weather of course.
-
Anyone get out Saturday? DA BEARS...
-
Went to NB and she was rough , waited till 9 :30 to launch because of rough swells, alot of boats came back in but we took our time and motored thru the swells, it was a terrible day as far as the bite but we had a good time. We left around 3pm with only 2 keepers, friends stayed till dark and they finally turned on. Water was nice when we left.
Gotta get out when you can.
-
Lake was like a sheet of glass last night.

GOOD LUCK, NEW BUFFALO?
-
Thursday for me. I am tempted to hit the usual spot but need to more adventurous Should be a nice day
-
I’m off the rest of this week ,would new buffalo be better considering water temps. Its showing 52 degree water in Michigan city and 66 at new buffalo
-
68.5 surface according to the Michigan City buoy. Fish 15 to 20 ft wherever you go baby golden roaches = yellow perch. I’ll be out in the morning good luck and safe ventures to all that are joining me
-
GOOD LUCK, NEW BUFFALO?
OK thursday and friday.
I heard of at least 3 - 50 perch limits today.
Yes Al
-
Limits in new buffalo and Michigan city? Definitely going tomorrow
-
Anyone have any luck today. This is the best conditions we have had all summer. Looks like 2 weeks straight with prevailing south winds. Can't wait till Saturday. LOL
-
Minus the 30 mile an hour gust they're calling for Saturday and the storms are calling for all day Sunday
-
I’ll be searching the Michigan city area tomorrow unless it would be better in new buffalo.I really don’t want to spend the xtra money for a Michigan licence.Any good info and point me in the right direction
-
Any reports? I will be launching from the Portage Marina early tomorrow morning. If we get ,the strong winds from the west as they are predicting, it will be a easy short run upon return. GOOD LUCK... I heard 25 f.o.w.
-
Well nothing to report from me.I fished west towards the ditch, all depths ,didn’t even mark a single pod. Also went east to blue tower .If any one fished new buffalo hopefully that’s where they were

Just gotta get on them when the shallow perch bite starts it lasts for quite awhile . And we pound them double like crazy and alot of 13 to 15 inch perch . And never run to Michigan.they can keep there expensive license

I am inclined to think like you. I think that with the winds being consistent that perch once found should be in that same depth range within a few feet reguardless whether in New Buffalo, Michigan City or Portage area. I havent heard anything all year further west???? Just my 2 cents. I do like the larger bag limits in Michigan. Might give it a try one time and only pay for a 1 day license. Just to know where to go in case??????? Have yet to catch any monsters yet all year, but I prefer the 9 inch, they taste better. Would like a 15 some day, or even 16. I know they are in there but I have never got anything larger than a 14 1/2 inch in the 50 years fishing Lake Michigan.....
-
Yep , and this yr has been a good one for me atkeast even tho I haven't been out in a good bit. I got my fill and have some nice bags in the freezer so I can have a good perch meal this winter. I would like to get out at least one more time for them. I was going to go Saturday but got called in for work . Now season is fixing to take off so we will see if I can make one more outing
-
In the same boat. Hoping to get out Saturday. The end is near. Need a couple more bags to stock the freezer. Havent had any in freezer for a few years. Nice to have a perch dinner in winter. LOL
