Now there's a question!  ;)
I would say kind of inbetween, but closer to the top.
There are a lot of variables- The lake you're fishing, water temp, time of day, etc.

The only spawning beds you should have to worry about are bass, and the water has to be at least 58 degrees. You probably can't target them, unless you're fishing the Great Lakes C+R season.

Try casting for pike in 4-8 fow in the morning with baitfish imitations like jerkbaits.
Trolling for walleye in the evening is probably the best way to pick one up.
There are a myriad of ways to go about this. Check out the Walleye board.

I have found that pike are much easier to catch than 'eyes, but again, this depends on where and when you are fishing.

Good luck!  8)

Actually, there is a C&R season on bass in the western fingerlakes....Honeoye, Canandaigua, Seneca and Kueka, plus maybe hemlock and canadice not sure abnout the last 2 so check the regs.....I caught a monster smallie on Canandaigua this past weekend (not intentionally as I wasn't bass fishing) but she was close to 6 pounds....

That's what I meant, Dr.
The Finger Lakes, and I believe it is all of them, including Conesus.

I like the bottom , the fish are still lazy as well as myself. Try the jigs and work em slow, like Devil man stated depends on the lake and weeds.
Internet heros give it a rest!
