Catching worms and keeping them alive ?
« on: Aug 17, 2009, 01:30 PM »
Hey guys, the other weekend when I was a the lake there were a pile of worms in the gravel after it rained. I picked up as many as I could and put them in an old coffee tin.

Just wondering whats the best way to keep them alive so I can use them all for as long as possible?

Any good tips for me, Im keeping them in my bar fridge for now.

Thanks,
Steven

I am sure there are many ways. I keep them in a cooler in the basement. I mix top soil and shreded newspaper and throw in a banana peel or apple slice every now and then. Keeps for months. Red worms and night crawlers. Buss brand worm bedding works good as long as it is not over saturated.

Keep them cool, that is the big thing.

You need to keep them moist, but not wet. You need soil that drains well and wont clump too. Good potting soil fits the bill, but garden dirt with a little sand in it works too.

Don't forget the air holes in the lid!

Not sure if it's true, but I heard that if you catch crawlers on the pavement, and if you mix with crawlers you bought, there stands a chance of them killing the ones you bought because of the petroleum from the asphalt. I'm not sure ??? ??? Any ideas??--KP

I am led to believe that raising worms indoors has a unique odor. This is a serious drawback, if its true.
