Big Baits for walleye
« on: Sep 02, 2005, 03:29 PM »
Hi guys since the fall is rolling around the corner, the walleye will be feeding heavily in preparation for winter. This usually means a bit bigger baits. I was wondering how big a lure or bait you have caught walleye on or have heard of walleye caught on?  For myself I have caught walleye on 6 inch grubs but heard a story of a walleye caught with a 9 inch Northern pike in it's stomach, the walleye was 10lbs :o ;D

I have caught walleyes on 5" super flukes. And I will use bigger jerkbaits, up to 4" when fishing after dark.
When walleye are feeding on larger forage like mature ciscoes, shad, or smelt, bigger lures work well. We don't have any pelagic baitfish around here, so I stick with smaller lures. Two to three inch cranks, 3 - 4" grubs, and the like.
Big eyes around here will take larger panfish, and smaller bass and trout. So sometimes a big lure is an option. But in Colorado, small lures rule. In other areas where bigger meals are more common, big lures can rule.

Doug Stange has often said that it is almost impossible to use lures that are too big for walleyes.

I went fishing the other day, and caught a walleye on a 7 inch gulp worm.
I think if it is skinny enough they will take some large lures or bait.

There's always gonna be a walleye big enough or aggressive enough to take a big meal.

We have caught 20 inch walleye with 10 - 12 inch brown trout in them.  Wimpy lures catch wimpy fish.

We are fortunate to have several Lake Michigan drowned river mouths within easy driving distance.  Some really big (30 inch +) walleyes cruise these outflows to feed after dark, especially on windy nights in the fall.  Our best luck has been while trolling #18 Rapalas at night.   I have done my best with chartruese and pearl.  My fishing partner swears by orange and gold.  I have heard of several larger 'eyes being caught by guys trolling muskie size baits.

We catch many large Walleye in the spring and early summer casting 7" Grandma's and 7 to 9" jerk and glide baits...Of course we are a bit disapointed when this happens because we are targeting Muskie. Super Shad Raps work too, try perch pattern and give it a ripping action.

My second largest walleye ever came on a big 'ol cisco kid.  Course my biggest walleye came on a 1/8oz inline spinner. :whistling:

I'll post some pics in the coming weeks of hawgs on large cranks...at the moment, my favourite lake is still at spring flood levels, with no water being drawn down as yet. the shallow safe trolling flats are now 10-12' deep instead of the usual summer 4-5'...combined with an extended cold front the fish arent in their usual haunts...yeah...big hawgs like big bait...later...Grump ;D ;D
