Hi, I'm pretty new to fly fishing and even newer to fly tying (Christmas gift this year). Yesterday I was fishing a local freestone river and could see bug casings on rocks so I picked one up and there was still someone home. The casings were made from sticks and debris. The bug I pulled out is below. It looks like some type of caddis larva but I'm not all that sure. Anyone know what insect and stage of insect this is?  Also, what are some fly patterns that I should tie to imitate this little bugger?

you have  single handedly captured a caddis  fly larva ...  what  more important  is your  looking in the water and seeing insects .... there are a  lot of patterns to imitate this  rascal ... I like  the  simple  patterns  myself match the  colors to the  ones  in your  area and  your on your  way ..... :thumbup_smilie:

Hey Rg...

It looks like you used the same color thread for the body (abdomen) and then used a marker for the darker segments... if so what do you use? Sharpie?  Or is it a woven pattern? Just curious...

Scratch what I said... looking closer, it definitely doesn't look colored.... it's in the materials.

interesting pattern RG

I think the colored darker  segments   is a piece  of thin skin or other  wing case material   worked in  a  final over wrap .....nice  fly
