Nice fish.  But, most importantly, it is nice to see young guys fishing instead of runnin the streets.  Keep it up, youl go far.

just my 2 cents

Thanks,

The boys love to fish. My oldest is now driving and he can't wait to get out after school and hit the river with his friend. Much better than other alternatives.

It's not always about the fish. The scenery brings you back as well. Here's some pics I took at some of my favorite fishing holes:

Great pictures, never seen the black hole like that, and I agree. I like the surfs up on Saratoga, just a little bit of water that spring.
Drove my the Batinkill today, looking good, alittle color.
Got to wait till next week to hit the streams, good luck this opener.

Slipbob,

I agree. The camera is a must. We were fishing the backwaters of Coveville on the Hudson for bass last summer when to my son's surprise, the Manfish of Coveville appeared from the scum when I took this quick shot:

Deposit,

I was fishing Vermont and Mass. that day. I fork over the extra 80 (40 each) bucks each year to get nonresident licenses in those states because their borders are fairly close to my home in NY and they have pretty good stocking programs. On Mass's Fish &Game website, they even give a weekly listing of the waters that they stock.

Have you ever been to the village of Deposit? Pretty good trout there too.

Just got back from a little family vacation on the outer banks of North Carolina. Did a little fishing and caught a bunch of types fish including stripers, bluefish and seatrout, needlefish, puffers, sea bass, drum , etc.  Most ran small but lots of fun.  Also went to a free exhibition of NC state record fish mounts at one of the piers (Jeanette's) that was blown away from Hurricane Isabel last year. All they asked for was a donation to help rebuild the pier. Nice display of fish including a sixteen foot blue marlin.  I couldn't help the last photo. . . I just had to do that.

Sounds like a great time on the Banks. The last picture is awesome, maybe they can turn that one into a commercial.  ;D  Looks like you and the family had a great time, now the boys have to come home and get ready for yucky school.  :P Where abouts did your son catch that sea trout, did you guys go out on a boat or was it off a bridge some where. Great pictures and that was one hugh yellow fin.

Not much fishing this weekend as raking piles of leaves took priority. I did get out just a bit from the shore and jigged up some perch and this 30 something pike. Also caught a 7 pound cat.

??? hey bartman/camo or anyone else that catches pike around locks 1,2,3,4,ect.  on the hudson, do you notice the color of them, kind of silverish with white spots ? Is it because of there habitat or is that what river pike looks like ???? There not the greenish color of ther cousins that live in the lakes....tight lines guys
Title: Re: Bartman44 Files - Open Water
Post by: Bartman44 on Nov 08, 2004, 04:41 PM
My guess is that they are of a different strain and it's the environment too. Most Hudson pike are cleary silvery and their white spots are smaller and unique. It's just not river vs. lakes though. The Mohawk river pike have completely different markings. These pike have more pronounced and bigger spots. The top two photos are Hudson fish, the last two Mohawk. Completely different markings yet all river fish.

Not much fishing lately, just some perch fishing for a few hours in Waterford this weekend. While I was there yesterday, the Bounty was locking through. It's the actual ship that was used in the movie "Mutiny on the Bounty." You never know what you're going to see down there.

Nice goin Bart, they are a blast. I dont think the third one is a hybrid but it does have some broken lines, I have seen a bunch of ocean run bass with similar markings, the hybrids usually have very prominant broken stripes rstarting right behind the head,  but ya never know. :o  Jebus Bartman.  Those things are massive.  You and mb3 must have had one heck of a fun day catching those.  I'd be psyched to catch just one.  Do you ever keep any to eat?  I hear that's some of the best tasting fish.  Never had it myself but it's supposed to be really good.

I can honesty say that I've never kept a fish to eat out of the Hudson but I've eaten a few smaller ones that I've caught from the coast of Maine and they're good eating and fillet up nice.

Yes WNY, the kid's arms (and armpits) were so sore that he had to let me land a few.

Would have been good out there today but had to work all day. Will be back at them Thursday and Friday.

But, if toga doesn't call be back Mon. or Cossayuna, I would like to hit some stripers.

Was supposed to hit the Hudson again today but opted for some flyfishing instead. That's the problem with the month of May, everything is going at the same time.

Maybe back to the stripers tomorrow.

After I picked the right fly, I scored big. Browns ran small but the bows were mega. Caught and released about 15.

Mostly C&R but I occasionaly take a few trout home for dinner. I'm mostly a panfish eater.

Took MB3 and his friend out today for a few hours in Schodack. His friend never caught a striper before and his first one was the little one pictured below that he thought was a "big" one.  Then he got into the next one and when he got it alongside the boat he said something like "Holy S%$#@"

Take a kid (or two) fishing!!! Fun stuff.

Haven't posted at all lately due to a broken digital camera but bought a new one recently. Still need to develop and post some June, July photos taken the "old" way.

Anyway, here's a few taken recently from the home waters and a few Adirondack trips.

WOW, I mean, WOW. I just really the that set of pics. I truly admire you and and your love for the outdoors. It truly impresses me that you routinely share your love with your son and pass such a grand tradition on for many generations to come through your sons. I believe you are another kind of hero; The kind of hero who passes on tradition and respect for the outdoors and all the wonder and excitement to be found. My hats off! Cheers!!

Hey Bart:

Are those canoe photos taken in the St. Regis/Fish Creek Pond/Rollins Pond area in Franklin County?  I was just there a few weeks ago and it sure looks familiar.  But then again, alot of the watyerways up there look very similar.  Just wondering.  Great photos and continued good luck.

Yes, Hookset - Stayed at Meacham.  Floated some of St. Regis and Deer River flows.

How's the track treating you?

Back from the outerbanks of NC. Took a million pics but I'll spare the beach, golf and Civil War battle site shots. Caught some sea trout and finally did the pier thing which was actually more fun than I thought it would be. Kids caught one fish after another. Also, no vacation would be complete without a final stop at the tackle shop.

Lastly, my college-bound oldest got out the past few evenings with his friend and he's getting some decent smallies. My turn is coming soon.

Hey Bart, the track has been picking my bones clean.  I am contributing to my own local economy!  I hope to make it all back over the weekend at the Travers, but historically, that's a nightmare of beer swilling and lost money.  Oh well!  Continued good luck!  By the way, great birthday gift.

Looking to adopt a 35 year old?  Actually Hookset, I just dropped my oldest off at college yesterday so I have room for another.

Here's a few recent photos that were taken with "real" film when the digital broke.  I'm sure Marbury will be posting the pickerel in the tourney. Will probably be on the Hawk somewhere tomorrow night.

Got out with Marbury this evening. 5 minutes into the trip he hits this 20 inch bass. We also got into some regular size bass and pike, then I switched to the big stuff and got this gator, just a shade under 42 inches. Released it quickly, eventhough it broke the hook right off of my bait.  Yahoo!

Been reading the racing form all day today in preparation for tomorrow.  I don't know why I bother, my wife picks them by the colors of the silks the jockey is wearing and cashes more tickets than I do.  May have to resort to throwing darts!

Nope, laid off of Flower Alley.  Actually, not an awful day.  Walked in and hit on a medium-sized bet and I worked off of the voucher for the rest of the day.  Beautiful day to be trackside, the 'surroundings' are always lovely.  One of these days I'm going to make money instead of donating.  But not this year...

Good job Bartman and son.  It is now Trout time and soon it will be walleye time down at the pond.  Only 5 weeks away now and we'll have to meet up again and catch a few eyes after work.   8)

Thanks for the posts everyone.

Actually Slip, I've been practicing some legal C&R river walleye action in the evenings the past two weeks and been doing well, though no monsters. It's a nice feeling carefully working that jig & twister tail off the bottom and BAMMM, eye on!

Drove past the pond the other day and it looked very inviting, get your new home in order now.

By the way, I just bought MB that pair of Hodgeman Streamlights he's wearing in the pic above and they are crap. After three hours of fishing, they started leaking in the seams. Returned them to Dick's today and I'll be ordering a better pair for him on Cabela's tonight. You get what you pay for.

Got out this morning for 4 hours. It was Marbury's lucky day and I
was the April fool. He catches this nice rainbow(first pic) on his "first"
cast of the day :o on his favorite blue fox spinner.

I lose a BIG one a short time later and never mentally recover from it >:(
He then proceeds to catch 5 nice brown trout to my one rainbow.

20 minutes before the cold front comes through, he nails this 20 inch
brownie in my face. Final score - Marbury 7, Bartman 1.

Nice brown your boy got.  If it is the stream i think it is, there are some real beautiful 20 inch plus trout in there.

At least one as that puppy went right back in the water to grow some more.

That's enough with the Bartman ribbing. It's bad enough here at the house. He's also outgrown me at 13 and he's calling me shorty. It's time for me to break out my secret weapon (the fly rod) ;)

Great bunch of pics Bartman.  I spent many, many a day wading that river when I was younger down near Hale Eddy and Hancock in search of trout.  Some great shad fishing too down past Hancock in May.  Did you fish the East branch at all?  That water rolling out of Cannonsville is COLD man, cold :D

Didn't fish the east this time but I've floated it. Some real deep holes. Pea's eddy is a lake.

West Branch was 45 degrees.  We actually were on the bridge at Hale eddy the other day looking down when a school of gizzard shad went through.

Pike guy, his waders leak again. Called Cabelas today and they're shipping me a new pair.

It was tough to find the time in May to get away but I did manage to break away from work to find some quality fishing.  I managed a striper trip with the kid & his friend, got back down to the Big D for some big rainbows sipping sulfers on the edge of the tall grass, did some special regulations bass fishing with both boys on the river, got Marbury up to the Ausable to further his flyfishing skills on easy-to-catch trout, and even got a few walleyes that are the subject of tonight's dinner.

BTW, we are rebuilding the shanty!  See you in the same place next ice season.  Hope we don't sink this time, that got a bit expensive.

Thanks for the comments all, I have no idea where I'm going to fish in July - as many of you guys know I'm a river rat and my rivers are way beyond flooded at the moment.

July fishing trips were few and far between but we hit the Adirondacks
for several days camping which is never a bad call. Also got in a few river
trips and one trip to Saratoga. Kids caught some nice fish but I figured
the ADK scenery pictures were better. Threw some fish pics from the
month in at the end.

Thanks everyone.

Yeah, he's been playing a lot of Texas Hold'em lately and that's his poker face. We'll try for some smiles next time.  At least he should be smiling in the Jiffy Pop shot, it's as much fun to make as it is to eat.

August started well- was out with Smiley for an hour last evening and we got some nice walleyes including this one. (Don't tell me, I should be smiling ;D)

Here's some August pics. The month started out with the rivers a bit high but they came down nicely mid-month which allowed us to break out the topwaters and flies in the yak and canoe. My crayfish tie didn't last long - we had several 40 fish evenings (with some bonus eyes) before we headed to North Carolina

On our way to the outer Banks of NC we stopped at the Chesepeake Bay Bridge-tunnel pull-off for a pit stop. Take a look at these signs.  The guy in the white T-shirt has a case of rolling rock on his wagon. So much for the first sign
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v81/Bartman44/aug5.jpg)

Take a look at this pic. These 15 rods belong to one guy. So much for the second sign
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v81/Bartman44/aug6.jpg)

We hit the pier one day on the outer banks at sunrise. The guy in the background (rod high) is fighting a 50 pound cobia. He fought it for 30 minutes and then it headed down the pier toward the "tourist" fishing area ::). Three tourists wouldn't move their poles so the cobia takes a right turn and wraps the line around the piling - SNAP!  Pier's aren't my thing but they certainly have some entertainment value.

Here's MR cobia before departing for deep water
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v81/Bartman44/aug11.jpg)

We also hit the sand in my brother-inlaw's 1973 Ford Bronco, cruising the shore for rising bluefish.

And we actually caught a wide variety of sea creatures
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v81/Bartman44/aug8.jpg)

Finally, here's the same pier (compliments of the Avalon Pier's web cam) this evening  as Tropical Storm Ernesto hits NC. (Glad we're back home in NY)

That's it for August.  Good luck to all this Labor Day weekend!

Kappy, we usually stay in the Nags Head/Kitty Hawk area. It's a nice place but unfortunatley, the big franchises have recently found it and I  fear they'll drive out the small bars/eating establishments which give the OBX it's unique character.  Per your request here's a few more. First, my view every morning from our deck. Second, another good reason to hit the OBX, nice golf courses. I got beat by my oldest on the last hole as I three putted for bogey  >:(

We were on the water a lot in September. Lots of fly fishing for trout
but only one photo. The kid is getting good with the long
rod. Last two trips he landed 16 trout.

We tried for Mr Big a couple of times but came up short. We did land a
bunch in the 30 to 35 inch range.

I hit Rhode Island for a few days with the wife to celebrate our 20th
wedding anniversary. She gave me the green light to fish for an hour and
I caught a half-dozen stripers in jeans and sneakers (wish I had my waders
but hey, I got to fish on my anniversay - gotta love the wife)

Did some bass fishing also. Check out the first bass Marbury is holding.
It has a black X on his tail. I've seen black blotches on bass before
but never a letter of the alphabet. If we catch it next year, we'll know it.

we need you on IS.

Marbury's got a new fly outfit so we've been bouncing around the Catskills.
Here's some pics from our 2-day trip.

Way to go on the bass and pike Bartman. 8)

Man, some of that water looks like you are fishing on a green felt carpet.
I think the fish would be going by sound only with your surface frog.

On your previous post nice drum, walleyes, striped bass and trout. :)
