is it me or are these lure prices getting ridiculous. I remember when I used to complain about Rapalas being $5 a pop, now the average lure is $10. even spoons are $7 for a piece of metal! I've been fishing my whole life and still lose 4 to 5 lures a year... i dont know -- its crazy... and its only going to go up from here... in 10 years its going to be $15-$20 for the average lure. just needed to complain....
-
i completely agree with you especially when i like to fish for river walleye and toss crankbaits its nothing to lose a couple of those 8-10$ lures a trip and it gets real old real fast
-
The price of lure is ridiculous!i got some good deals on lures at bass pro and dick during there preseason sales.
-
I'm already seeing lures in the 15-20 dollar range. I really can't imagine them being that much better than an $8 lure. I wait for sales at BPS, Dicks or Sports Authority, or buy my lures at Wmart, so most of the time I'm paying no more than 4-6 bucks for a Rapala or similar lure. The only time I pay the high prices is when it's something I can't find in the big box stores and have to buy it in the local tackle shop.
-
You expected prices to go down?
RG

Yup were old. Get use to it............. ;D

That's why there isn't bait shops around any more!

I'm getting old and still say lure prices are insane. Have to raise my own crawlers in lieu of lures, spent all my savings on ammo. ::) ;D

Oil, guys. It all comes back to.......OIL!!!!!!

That wouldnt surprise me one bit actually....You expected prices to go down?
RG
No, just remember when they were $5 a pop, and kind of expected them to hover around the same price -- not almost double with no end in sight...
i wonder what the costs would be to start making my own..... eventually thats what im gonna have to do anyway at this rate with the inflation...

It all comes from China

Sad thing is, rapala's are cheap compared to live target and lucky craft and such. I remember seeing a bass swimbait on tackle warehouse for $490. Paying $10-$20 for a lure is considered cheap now. I loose lots of lures....adds up quick

When my parents moved a few years ago my dad was clearing out some of his old fishing stuff and gave it to me. He had a few Rapalas, still in their original box, marked $2.99.

I am always looking for bargains and often find good deals, in big box stores, small shops and ebay. But some lures like Sebile Magic Swimmers, you just can't find big discounts and so far I have not found a lure as well made with a action like it. I have caught so many fish with Shimano's Butterfly jigs and they start at over $20 and don't even come with hooks! Some times the cheaper knock offs will work (thank goodness) but many lures just aren't as good... All that being said, I don't throw the expensive lures into brush piles, (if I can help it) and I go thru a lot more effort to get one of those suckers back. I do think that there is a LOT of gouging going on, but many of the expensive lures are much better made then your average Rapala. As long as enough anglers buy them, then they will keep selling them...
In 1960 a loaf of bread and a gal. of gas was .25 cents... I think (its to early in the morning for me)if we did the math, a Rapala has not gone up as much in comparison...
-
20$ is definatly insane for a lure even 10$ is crazy. I try to hit up the flea markets and watch craigslist for whole tackle boxes filled with gear for cheap. Only problem with that is you don't get a choice of color/brand ect. so ya still end up spend that $11.99 for that new rapala xrap countdown...at least it always ends up being worth it when you land that fish in the $80+ net ya just had to have...dam nothings cheap :'(
-
From Wikipedia;
"1960, Rapala Sales were slow at first as the price of $1.95 was twice that of typical lures on the market."
1960 loaf of bread .25 Cents, cheap loaf of bread now about 2.50, 10x the price. If the Rapala had gone up at the same rate as bread they would be around $19.50, there is something to be said for Mass production...

As we all know bread is made from wheat and grain prices have gone way up since we started to make gas from our food.
ClearCreek

yeah -- its not just lures either. fishing line is getting a bit crazy -- not to mention a good net now adays is $80, like dirtydeeds said.... I hate supporting the big box stores over the local bait and tackle shop -- but my wallet feels a lot better leaving wally world than the local bait shop. guess we're all getting old.

Oh Rapala has lures going for $20 a pop -- XRap countdown $19.99 at Cabelas....
yea, next thing you know Rapala will be making their lures out of corn -- seeing how everything else in this world has corn in it....
-
No it's the trend everywhere in the US... Prices of commodities are going up and wages are going down. It's because companies have gotten away the henry ford model of running businesses. Its very annoying!
-
The price of poles and reels are outrageous too, the daiwa steez cost $599! Way to much for a baitcaster
-
I but Norman and storm ... Still 5 bucks a pop
-
Make your own! I rarely use crank/stick baits any more. I catch most of my fish on jigs, and they are easy and cheap to make. On most days they will out produce a hard body bait. There are a couple guys on here that make lures, and some are way beyond what you can buy.

This.... but even more then oil is inflation. Our dollar is being devalued more and more everyday. Can't imagine being older and living on fixed income from money stashed away from 20 years ago :o

You nailed it ,and it isn't just lures it's everything we buy . It's over . >:(

Check out the new Ranger 520c bass boat. $80,000 and the one I saw was sold.
-
Right! and the price of that ranger bass boat will never go down! Just like everything else- the prices only go up, not down. I don't think it's attributable entirely to inflation because prices don't go down during deflationary periods. The bubble is going to pop eventually...
-
Price keeps going up and quality keeps dropping. Just bought a new Stradic 2500 and the first thing that hit me was all the plastic parts that were being used, compared to my other Stradics that I purchased 10 years ago.
-
I had gotten some huge MagShad lures off ebay at the end of the open water season last year. They were all under $10 apiece and seem very well made. When I say huge, I mean they were all 12+ inches. I also purchased a bunch of material to make my own muskie/pike lures. I can make them now for around a $1 apiece, versus $10-$15 apiece at the store.
-
My tire guy is giving me all of his old wheel weights, I am going to start making my own jigs, sinkers. I agree, the prices that they are charging for this stuff is outrageous!
-
yeah the homemade route is where its at. there is no middle class, anymore -- its rich, less poor and poor.... everything it outsourced so its cheaper to make, even if its made here in the u.s.a. most of the materials are shipped from across seas.... $80,000 for a bass boat is crazy. just like the side by side a.t.v's -- some of the top models are $25,000..... you can buy a brand new car for the price of your off road "toy" t.v.s are getting cheapere, though -- i remember when a 42" plasma t.v. was $10,000 -- now they have them for dirt cheap -- and you can get an l.e.d. 75" for a grand...
-
One of the local stores had Shadraps on sale for $4.99 yesterday. I use SR9 deep divers a lot so I grabbed ten of them. They are $6.99 at Cabela's.
-
its all about greed I just bought some strike king lures from tackleware house they were the king shad nomal price 20.00$ got them for 7.00$ that's 13$ off and they are still making money I bet it doesnot cost them more than a dollar to make they should then sell it for 4$ not 20$ there is one way to stop the high prices if nobody buys them then the price will go down but that will never happen and they no that
-
I like big wooden American made lures: Afterhours, RM Smith, Stripermaineiac, etc etc many other great plug makers out there ... $20/$30 bucks a pop.
Worth every penny, as expensive or as cheap as you want to make it. Redfins for $5 or $7 just as good. Not rich by any means, probably why I don't own a boat. :D
-

on IS some guys were making some pretty good lookin jigs...i think it would b cool to make them and catch something on what i made...more satisfaction that way....lol
-
I agree and will add the prices of hip boots and waders are crazy. I remember getting a pair of good insulated waders for around $40 but those days are long gone. Then again I also remember when I could get a pair of size 14 waders in just about any store, now a days you have to order them if you're lucky enough to find them.
-
no different now then back in the day my dad use to complain about prices back then, lol ,dollar bill was worth more back then so it went farther ,and we still made stuff here, but I'm a little senile and could be looking at it a little different
-
I make my own jigs and after buying hooks,7 or 10 def colors of paint, thinner, clear sealer(Don't buy the cheap stuff ) plus the time u have in them ,they really arn't that much cheaper. But they do seem to catch more fish . I do make alittle back by selling some . My jig sizes are 1/32 ,1/16. 1/8 ,3/16 ,1/4 i get 1.50 to 2.00 each. Plus i forgot the mold (40.00) plus shipping.
-
Here are some appox prices for componites mold 40.00 .paint and sealer (1 oz)4.50 , hooks 10.00/100 thinner 4 oz for 12.00
-
The way to get the price of $80,000 boats to come down is to keep a boat for more than a few years. The price doesn't keep going up if the aren't selling. I kept the boat previous to the one I have now for 13 years and this one is 7 years old already. I know people who buy a new one every few years because the graphics and interior colors change.
-
My boat is almost 14 years old and I plan to keep it a lot longer because it's paid for.
-
haha I hear ya. Mine is 26 years old. just put a new motor on her so shes good for another 26. not ONE rivet leaks. I love that old beast.....

The greed of corporate America is hoooorible! All the bigwigs running these company's are making way too much money. It shows when they ship the manufacturing jobs oversees and screw their own country's economy for their own profits. I try to purchase items made in the U.S.A. as much as I can. :flag: :flag: :flag:

X2 but it is getting harder every year. Generally USA made produces cost more because manufacturers costs are higher because of inflation and wages; if they have full time employees Obamacare hits them hard. So a lot of the US manufacturers are either closing or going foreigner made.

I have a 87 17' Lund Sportsman and have no plans to trade up soon for the very same reasons.
-
as soon as you are conceived, you are getting older!!!!!!!!
-
Just bought a new 13year old Crestliner last year. I plan to keep it for a long time!
