Title: Line counter reels
Post by: yellowned on Jan 09, 2023, 08:13 AM
What size line counter reels do you recommend for spooling 100 yards ( 10 colors )of
18# leadcore line. Was looking into okuma or daiwa brands

Okuma I use 30 series for 10 colors lead and plenty big for lead and backing and use 20 series for 30# braid for dipseys

I never run more than 6 colors
A ten color spool gives me 6 for one rod and 4 for another.  Two spools give me two 4 color and two 6 color.
If I need to go deeper I either use the downriggers or add a snap weight onto the backer of the leadcore line.
We had 10’s and even 12’s years back but our loss ratio for fish getting off was too high.  A buddy of mine, who fished the walleye circuit as a pro told me to stop using so much lead.  He said the fish simply had too much time to spit the hook.  I also cut my leaders from 25’ down to 8-10’.
Our catch ratio went up.
I know there’s tons of guys who run 10 color.  I’m just posting what we experienced.

But, to finally answer your question, yes a 30 will handle it.

Good luck!

I also run 18# advanced suffix runs deeper and thinner, and as long as we use a steady retrieve loose no more fish with 10 out or 5 out just what we've found, when we lost more we found it was because we started reeling faster to get the 10 colors in but once we slowed down and steady( yea seems to take forever) but much better slow and steady ,no lifting and lowering rod just tip up and let rod be a cushion for head shakes

I see cabelas has a line counter reel in size 30 it states
20/250(mono) would 18# 10 colors suffix leadcore fit on that reel?
I still like the okuma cw-303d but would buy the cabelas as
a spare if the size 30 would fit the 10 colors.

The drags on those are junk
I have 2 and rebuilt the drags.
The added cost for the drag parts brought the overall up to an Okuma.
Okumas today aren’t as good as they were 10-15 yrs back IMHO.
Still, they are better than the Cabelas.

Gotagetm, I agree 100% about the quality of the okuma,
you said you had 2 cabelas reels any in the 30 size ?
If so would do they accept 10 colors of 18#.

They could handle 10
A size 30 reel is the basic same spool from manufacturer to manufacturer.
Of course if you put on 500 yds of backing………..
