Well the ice is finally off the rivers here in central Alaska. The grayling are on thier annual migration run into the local backwaters to spawn. They're relativily easy to catch on fly and damned beautiful to look at. Most are big "suckers" for dry as well as beadheads and chronomids. A blast on a little 5 wt. rod! I don't think these photos due them justice! -Barleydog

gorgeous fish BD, you get those in the Chena? The rod i have up here is way overkill for grayling, 9wt. I don't know if i'll go for them this spring, although it would be fun. How was the action?

Jake, I was fishing the Piledriver area. Lot's of fish! If you have an light action rod, that's all you need. Let me know if you want to go... Some 16" fish were available, but the rookies fishin' with me kept spookin them!

That is some clear water, and some beautiful fish. I don't think that I had ever seen the sides of a grayling. Are they good eating, or just pretty and a nice fight on light tackle?

Beautiful fish Barley dog. Thanks for shareing the pics. I have never seen that good of a pic of a Grayling before. That gives me a lot better of an idea of what they look like.

ReubenPa, Ya know I have eaten Grayling a couple times and they are o.k. Kinda mushy unless eaten fresh out of the water. They don't save well in the freezer either. Most of the area rivers are catch and release artificial bait only, makes for some great fishing though! The fish fight like mad dogs. They use thier dorsal fin as leverage against the river and angler. ;D

Average fish about 14-15" This one fell for my son's gitzit jig.
