The corn cob pipe was a challenge. I was laughing all the time I was making it.

Ahhh…….was this because you were hitting on your own corn cob pipe?

Not with fast spinning objects and extremely sharp tools! Been doing woodworking for near 50 years and I can still count to 10 on my fingers.......and thumbs👍

Good man.

Hey - to save me the searching effort here, please post the info again on what you did for your lathe cutting tools.
Jeff is experiencing premature dullness (nope - he stays off the herb while turning like you) on his tool.
Who!
Just read that again.    :o

Anyway, he is currently hand sharpening them and it works.
But he is turning hardwood burl and it's really burning up the tool bits.
I know you discussed this quite extensively a year or more back.

What did you end up doing?
Any suggestions for Jeff?
Thanks.

Bought a variable speed 8" Delta grinder...80 & 180 grit CBN wheels and a Oneway Wolverine sharpening jig setup. Best $500 I've ever spent on tooling. Perfectly repeatable results in seconds on the grinder.

For tooling he should look at Penn State Industries Benjamin's Best tools. A really decent tool of M42 High Speed Steel. Either that or make some carbide insert tools. A couple of replacement tips and a diamond sharpener and he'll be in business. I've made 8 different carbides for different purposes. A couple of the shafts were made by Fishmachine. He's a fine machinist. They're good, long lasting tools for general purpose work.

Nothing like a good plug!   :thumbup_smilie:

Mac, when you say " burning the tools up", does that mean it's "coloring or blueing" the cutting edge?  If so, it's turning too fast.  Have Jeff reduce the rpm's.

If you mean it's just making them dull, it's probably the quality or type of steel they're made of. The only fix for that is new tools.   ;D

Your tool shafts are far better than those I've looked at in the spendy woodworking stores. I use the heck out of them.

Jeff is turning stabilized blanks. Very hard and abrasive. I'd guess he's using inexpensive carbon tool steel tools. No way they're gonna hold up especially if they're not sharpened correctly. I've never seen a freehand sharpened wood lathe tool that's consistent.
