Nice....mourning doves are nice birds. Kind of clumsy around the feeders, but nice. Do you have some sunflower feeders out for them?

I have a pair on my property. I like them too, but growing up my brother hated them. If he tried to sleep in on his days off he had one that hooted right out side his window.

I think every woodpecker in the neighborhood has found those mealworm blocks.

Just got a shot of the little House Wren who moved into the house I hung in our pine tree.

Squawky little thing. Let's me know she's there when I'm tending my gardens.

The bluebirds have also decided that the blocks I put out are pretty yummy.

The Hairy Woodpecker comes in and moves everyone out of his way.

Starlings or Robins Dom?

Doesn't look like a robins nest. No mud.
I need to check our bluebird box for eggs later today. They've been around and defending their territory. Funny to see the male swoop down and whack a squirrel on the head as it's running away. Feisty little bugger.

I have a homing pigeon resting in a cage in my garage with feed and water tonight. It got caught in some mono line I put around my ponds to keep the Great Blue Herons out. It has at least one band and I will look it up tomorrow. Is wet and exhausted.

This is not the first time a homing pigeon that has hung around my property. Anybody have any ideas why they land here? Looks similar to their destination? The four ponds have something to do with it?

We find they hang out here for a few days and then fly off.

Here's the female pigeon my dad kept in a cage for the night with food and water. She ate some of the food and drank some of the water and was raring to go the next day and took off. My dad (lives in an apartment above my garage) released her before I could get the numbers down from the bands. That said I doubt this will be the last time we get a banded pigeon to show up.

That is really cool. I've seen them nest in the darnedest places!

How many of you know that the robin was originally strictly a woodland bird that has adapted to open spaces?

the storms probably messed it up.  it mite still find its way home. since you fed it, it just mite come back again.  they arent like wild birds.  i have heard of them hanging around for several days.

Thanks for the response. Just wish I could have seen the band numbers to see where she came from.

We raise and harvest our own pigeons, 30 years now. One of my favorite proteins when in a barley soup with parsley and mushrooms. Meat is fall off the bone.

Last thing my gramps requested before passing away...... might be mine too.

I had a dove build a nest on the wire to keep debris out of the down spout on my gutters one time. Luckily we never had any rain to speak off while she was there.

When I used to field hunt geese I always  had some #7 steel in my vest. Barn pigeons were attracted to my spinner. We shot quite a few over the years. Good eating.

The year we had a dove season in Michigan it was only in the southern most counties. Of course we had no season in the field we were hunting in the north. The 10 acre field we were hunting geese on was solid with doves. The farmer had planted alfalfa with a wheat cover crop. The next year he blamed the geese for the failure of the alfalfa. I told him it was dove not geese. Sadly dove season was put on the ballot and the city slickers put an end to it.
