Title: Finally Got him
Post by: Jdawg67 on Jul 07, 2010, 03:59 PM
This past weekend, I was at Chautauqua Lake with Family and friends.  My son (Kenny) and I got a chance to do a little fishing together with a friend of mine, but Kenny is only 4, so a little fishing means 5-10 minutes at a time.  I understand, and know I can't push it too much, and have him not like fishing at all.  We would take the boat out, and fish for a few minutes, and then drive around.  Fish a few more minutes, and go for a swim.  This is how it has to be with him.  So the last night we take the boat out, and do our thing, and he still just isn't really all that interested.  He likes to see the fish that are caught, but doesn't really want to catch any himself.  I know it's not over, but I also know he isn't quite as hooked yet as I want him to be.
We head back to the Dock.  Kenny says he wants to fish while I cover the boat and what not.  Sure Pal Why not, and I put a little piece of worm on the hook.  Kenny is off to do his thing with his trusty snoopy pole in hand.  I tell him he should fish at the end of the dock where it is a little deeper, but he has other ideas.  He wants to go fish from shore next to the dock.  I, knowing the water is only a foot deep at shore, know he probably won't catch anything, and try to urge him to fish out near me while I cover the boat.    He wants to fish on shore, and that is that, but as long as he is happy, that's what matters.
I am in the boat putting the poles up, and the cover, and all of the sudden, I hear screaming of Daddy, Daddy Come Here  I think Oh boy, I am about to have to remove a hook from the boy, and Momma is going to kill me.  To My Surprise, he is standing on shore holding his pole up with a 3” perch dangling from the hook, yelling “I catched one, I catched one.”  I come running down the dock to see a boy as proud as any boy ever was with himself.  “Daddy I catched one all by myself, I'm a big boy!”  At that point, I was a puddle of mush.  He was fishing away all by himself, and The grin on his face will never leave my mind.  I take his fish off, and he tells it good bye.  In the water it goes.  He proceeds to catch about 25 perch, sunfish, and rock bass in the next ten minutes.  He is more proud of each fish than the last.  I just sat next to him, and watched him go to town on those fish.  He called Momma over to watch too, and she couldn't have been more pleased with her boys.
It was the 4Th of July, and the Fireworks were starting, so our fishing had to end.  As I carried him up to the cottage, he put his arms around my neck, and said “Daddy, I'm so happy I catched some fish with you.”  I said me too buddy me too.
At that moment, I knew he was my newest fishing partner.  I finally GOT HIM… HE WAS NOW HOOKED just like his old man.

I know I'll never have to go fishing alone again...

That's pure awesome.  It's funny how the rookies can get on that many fish when the seasoned fishermen are thinking they're not going to catch anything...

Great story. I can see the grin on his face just thinking about it. Memories for a lifetime. I can still remember when each of my kids started fishing and it brings tears to my eyes thinking about it. The highlights of my fishing with my kids are when my oldest was 6 we won a father daughter derby. She won on the kids side and I won on the parents side and this past winter my 14 yr old caught a 13 lb walleye ice fishing. After she caught the fish I stopped fishing the rest of the day and sat back with a huge smile and tears in my eyes after watching her land the fish herself.  When I got the fish back from the taxidermist and she seen it the smile on her face was unforgetable. Cherish the memories with your kids.

That's a great story.

My now 3 year old boy is still only interesting in me casting the bobber out and him reeling it back in.  No matter how many fish he's caught, he's still interested only in the reeling in part.  I believe it's because I use a lot of artificial and all I'm doing is reeling  back in.  He rarely see's me with the bobber just sitting out there because I'm working the bobber too.

Absolutely priceless. Both my kids are all grown up and your story brought me back a few years. I remember taken them out at 4am in the morning and catching one salmon after another. I still have thr picutres in my office and see them everyday. Congrats to your boy, he is hooked for life.

I have had him out a few times since, and he is stoked wth anytghin he can catch.  Fished Conesus for a couple hours this weekend, and he caught a few gills, and a lot of weeds.  The first fish that hit his little bit o worm was a real nice Large mouth 18" or so.  Unfortunately the fish got off before he had the line tight.  That would have been fun to watch.  But we ended the day with a few gills, so he was successfull.  We'll be back at Conesus for a long weekend starting Thursday night.  He asks me every morning if it's Thursday yet.

He is getting a little more hooked each time out, and his patience is starting to get a little better.  He goes almost a minute before he reels in the bobber to see if he caught something yet.

Wow! That sure brings back memories. I learned everything I know from my father. I recently lost him to brain cancer, and fishing hasn't been the same since. Its lonely out there without him, my best friend, my fishing buddy, my Dad. Love you Dad!

Kenny has grown a bit as a fisherman now.  He was out this past weekend with me, and caught over a dozen all by himself.  I nice three pound Largie, and 5lb sheephead in the mix too.  That sheepie was loads of fun.  Kenny trie to give me the pole several times during his epic battle, but with a little help from Dad, he got him in.  The look on his face when he saw that fish was truly awesome.  Monday morning I was getting ready to leave for work, and he wrapped his whole body around my neck.  He said I love you daddy thanks for taking me fishng.  Needless to say we will be going agiain this weekend.
