Eclectic Mix
« on: Jul 25, 2020, 04:43 PM »
I fished the South Hoosic in Cheshire from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM.

It was sunny and about 83 degrees.  The stream was disturbingly low.

I started below the Cheshire Harbor dam,and caught an 8" bullhead - - only the second time I've caught a bullhead on the Hoosic in 25+ years.

Then I headed upstream along the Bike Trail, and fished almost (but not quite) all the way to Church Street in Cheshire Center.

Along the way, I ended up catching five more (8" to 10") bullhead (in a backwater pond near the Adams Drinking Water property), two (7" & 8") brookies (in a feeder stream), two (3" & 5") crayfish and about twenty (4" to 10") dace.

I may need to visit that stretch with a bait bucket!

Yes, the dace seem to have taken over the upstream stretch of the South Hoosic, with any trout action further downstream.

(The DFW traditionally stocks mostly rainbows, which gradually head down stream as the season progresses).

I'm not sure if I'll go fishing today, but, if I do, I'll probably concentrate on the North Branch instead.

Yup, most of them were 6" or 7".  (There were also some smaller ones - - but I couldn't hook and land them).

Too small....need the 10-18" option for fall. Fun fact...adult pike can eat a bait 1/3rd their size.  For the pike in the 40-45" range thats a giant bait.

Nice!  I haven't gone that big yet, but won't think twice about hanging a 14" fallfish.  Usually try to use up the 6"-10" first and save the big ones for later in the season.

I catch those dace on a dry fly, a trico or a caddis when fishing for brown trout. They would be excellent bait! Glad you searched out the mix of fish and places.
