I guess the real question is   ....   What are you doing with you're feet so close to something that has jaws as powerful as they do ?  ???

Turtle is good eating though if you have taken proper steps to clean them and leave them in cool fresh water for a couple of days before you process them .

I guess you could but we chose not to .
We used to cut a 50 gallon barrel to about two feet deep and drill a few holes at about half way up to let water run out . Put a hose in it running really slow ..< just enough to circulate fresh water > and let it do that for a couple of days .
That will help flush the turtle and give you cleaner meat .
We were always told not to feed because it would help the turtle to burn fat from not eating and that would also help flavor . Not sure if the no feeding rule really worked or not but the fresh running water deffinatley does .

Up at our lake several years ago guys would set out jugs for the snapping turtles.  They used chunks of deer meat soaked in bottles of deer blood from the previous fall.  The would catch a bunch of these turtles, and they made the ones pictured in this thread look like baby turtles.  To kill them they would stick out a branch, as the turtle would strike the branch and snap down they would shoot it in the head with a handgun.  Some body part inside of the turtle was still moving more than a half hour after being cut open and cleaned.  The guys told us that there are 7 different flavors of meat in the turtle, not sure exactly what that meant.

I always thought it would be cool to make a big clock out of a turtle shell.

Turtle's are excellent eating, but a little work to clean.  The 7 different flavors of meat refers to the different pieces of the turtle.  Some taste like chicken, some like beef, some like pork, some like fish, and so on.

Man, if you have never tried it, you should!  Turtle soup is considered a delicacy down in New Orleans, awesome stuff!  Down there they have alligator snappers, that grow to be 200+ pounds.
