It's about time...
« on: Mar 01, 2019, 03:50 PM »
The ice season in central Indiana was rather short this year. Still on Shanty, but I'm gettin' the itch to go fishin'.  OK, so most of the streams are blown out, but I'm seeing a lot of open water in lakes and ponds.  Maumee Tackle is updating daily, Bennett Spring has started catch and keep...I have been watching the cams on the Michigan City pier. One day Trail Creek is clear, then the wind shifts and the next it is ice bound.   Any one else heading out on soft water this weekend?

I am guessing in a few more weeks (hopefully less), I will be taking my boat out as well.

Travels took me through Brookston, so I ran over and made a few casts below Oakdale.  There was a
small shad kill and a ton of gulls were taking advantage.  No fish came out to play.  The 36 degree water
was dropping fast.  That probably didn't help.  Still it was good to get out

From what I understand shad are very sensitive to cold water and rapid temp changes this time of year. Could that be it?

Yup,  It's an annual occurrence due to fluctuations in water temp.  It's also the reason those areas
tend to host a bunch of bald eagles each year.  As posted elsewhere, LMB have put me on the board
