My partners and I did a bit of boat fishing yesterday afternoon, Sat. June 2nd.

As we arrived at the lake I saw some guys and ladies with a tub of fish, taking notes.
They had some pike, lots of walleye, a few big suckers and a couple of tiny perch.
They said that they were the Department of Natural Resources {DNR} and they had netted the fish for study of lake population and what they were eating.
They said that this particular lake had quite a few 2-3 lb walleye with a few 5 pounders mixed in, the pike numbers were average with 2-5 lbs common and a small group of large suckers but only a handfull of 6 inch perch.

It turned out that most of the fish were feeding on the abundant freshwater shrimp population.
The lake is very high with lots of fresh water and you see shrimp swimming everywhere near the surface.

They had also netted the lake a few km's to the West.
In that lake they found pike walleye and perch along with a monster 28 lb pike.
The DNR staff were very happy and surprised with that big one, unfortunately,  the fish was dead when they found it.

The lake that I was fishing Sat. also had a few good fish taken last weekend.
There was a 15 and 23 lb pike taken and a few 2-5 lb walleyes.

My partners and I didn't find any fish as large as those.
The pike were all the same size in the 21-22.5 inch range.

This one is my big fish of the day a slightly chunky 22.5 inch pike. :)

The marks on it sure look like a net, perhaps the fish escaped the DNR's net or it was found alive and released.

I would have entered it for the tourney, but upon review when I got home I noticed that the trees blocked the view of the lake and you need the lake in the photo, so that fish does not count,Oops. ::)

Oh well there's always another day. :w00t

Thanks pikemaster,

Yeah some of the pike really have reddish orange fins which show up well in the sun.
while some of the pike have more yellow green fins.
It all depend on the fish, no two are alike. 8)

I caught a pike last fall who had no dark marking at all on it's lower fins, even half of it's tail, while the dorsal and upper tail fin was dark.
That was the first time I have seen that coloration in pike.

It even had a little diamond on it's side. :w00t:
