Title: Walleye Baits - Spring
Post by: JWHORF on Mar 06, 2024, 02:51 PM
Ice fishing season is over for me and I am looking to do some walleye fishing before the season closes?

Curious as to what everyone's go to baits for the pre spawn walleye bite?

Thanks in advance,
Jeremy

You cannot fish them in NY from 3/16 thru 5/1 (when they spawn).

So, pre-spawn fishing is kinda not good.

However, if I was going to break the law for some walleye.............................why not go all the way.........................dynamite.

(edit) - just saw - "before the season closes".

In that regard, slooooow!
Crawler harnesses would be good.
But the water is cold, so slooooooooooow!

I toss ALOT of plastics in cold water.. right now is a GREAT TIME ..
My go to is a white paddletail .. or white Mr twisters...
If fishing bigger lakes DONT BE AFRAID to troll crankbaits nice and slow..1-1.5 mph

I've had good luck trolling as fishinjohn suggested. Even though people say small baits in the spring, I run the #11 Rapala deep tail dancers. Purpledesent is the hot color for me. They will dive to 30' with 10 pound line. Not supposed to work early season, but i fish water 25-30 feet deep. I do run them slow at times like fishinjohn suggests, but I usually motor troll at 2-2.3mph.
I also run bottom bouncers and worm harnesses at .9-1.5mph with the electric motor in the same deep water. Can't wait to get out.

Bonus pike are fun too.

Thanks for the info.
I finally have a window to fish for a few hours (at night, due to working 2nd shift).
I plan on throwing some white paddle tail (keitechs) along with some Rat L traps.

Thanks again,
Jeremy
