Nice fish Mike. Your fishing attire last few days has gone from ice fishing parka to tee shirt, guess we're heading in the right direction!!!
Thanks Jay! How's it going in Ohio? Its going. I'm not going to be back for my usual opener tournament. We have been working 12hr days every day. Hope to be back before the pike move out onto deeper structure. Good luck, and keep sending the pics!

First leadcore outing on Rondout a success! 16" brown on 5 colors, 17" laker on 4 colors.
FANTASTIC photos, guys!!! Especially yours, Slap!!!
Makes me miss those reservoirs on summer evenings. I used to live right over the hill from the Rondout and Neversink (Claryville) and spent a whole lotta' evening pounding BIG smallies from Cooney's Point.
Those fish used to HAMMER topwaters at sunset. Like they wanted to smash the lure into pieces.
What a place... I never spent much time chasing the trout in the rowboat (only shore fished 'em in the Spring), but those sure are some beauties!
(I remember convincing myself that I was catching big Landlockers when I first discovered those Seaforellen Browns... I assumed they came out the discharge pipe from the Neversink, but it didn't take long for my neighbors to correct me and let me know those are, in fact, Brown Trout, haha... Never did get a darn Landlocker out of the Neversink, and man alive did I try....)
AWESOME STUFF, GUYS!
great fish any stats
Nice guy! Question are you guys running that 832 advanced leadcore?
real great looking lakers ,and nice photos thanks for sharing

When all was said and done we landed 27 fish and lost at least another dozen! Was like early ice on LG! :D
Mike
Thank You Sir! Always enjoys your pics as well!
Mike
Crushed them Mike! Nice work, very jealous!
Can you put KAYAKS out on those reservoirs?
Jager, I never know what to say. You catch some beautiful trout. Always impressed. ;D
Thanks FM! We have a lot of fun on the reservoirs and once in a while we luck out and hit the laker feed just right! Appreciate the kind words! :-)
Mike
Love that second one. Brookie colored fins and all.
Nice job guys! No jigging on fourth Mike? I have been making use of a drift sock this year. What a helpful tool for days hat are too windy!
ANYONE see or HEAR anymore on CANNONSVILLE????????Hi chez.... Well they said the problem is fixed.
I WAS GOING THERE LAST SATURDAY but,Ended up at DOWNSVILLE.
Was a slow TROUT BITE,But hot Bass bite.
Thank you so much Choo Choo for the report.
I heard the problem was fixed, and you seem to have comfirmed it for me.
Im heading to the beach this weekend for a week.
When i get back im gunna hit it for smallies.I luv the fall smallie bite there.
Cannonsville is just getting back to normal after the last problem.
I luv both Cannonsville and Downsville but,Cannonsville is a good half hour closer.
I heard of this Round Out Dam in Ny.
I want to try to get some info on it.And possably drop a boat on it.
THANKS AGAIN ChOO ChOO AND GOOD FISHING TO YOU.
Chez, Roundout is a fantastic reservoir, loaded with Lakers and Smallies and also has a good Brown fishery with some monsters caught each season! In mid July and friend and I went for the day to jig for Lakers. We caught close to 20 fish that day including a nice 13.5lb'r! A great source for info on The Roundout is the Hudson Valley Sportsman, http://www.hudsonvalleysportsman.com/index.php?action=forum
You'll find a great group of guys and there is a lengthy thread on The Roundout as well as several other of the West of the Hudson DEP waters. I think you'll find the site very interesting!
Mike
Mike, what would it take for a CT guy like myself to get out on Roundout?
Me giving you a copy of my key! It'll open all my boats for you to use! :-)
Sent you a PM!
Way to get out! I only see a rainbow and smallie pictured ???
Nice work Mike. I have to come visit sometime soon. Ill do the rowing!
Question guys - Can you chase panfish in the NYC watersheds prior to the April 1st trout opener?
Any time Jon! Be glad to show you around!
Thats whats up Mike! Nice work!!
nice fish!What's the water temp?
Banged a nice fat brown from shore at Cannonsville yesterday. A fathead minnow 3' under a bobber. Surprised to find one that high in the water column Also threw my arm off with all of my go-to spoons without a hit!
Might be better to wait until April 1st to target trout there with spoons unless you were catch and release fishing for bass.
Well what would be the difference between catch & release for Bass or Trout being that they are both out of season? I throw every trout back either way, in season or out. I caught the brown on the minnow accidently while fishing for Crappie....
nice mike, they will be coming fast and furious soon for ya
no worries there, he's fishing a reservoir where the season is open all year.
I remember many long days and nights fishing with my dad under the bridge that splits the Res in half for monster rainbows... :)
I remember many long days and nights fishing with my dad under the bridge that splits the Res in half for monster rainbows... :)We used to fish for the spawning Ashokan rainbows up in the Esopus early every spring. It was always a thrill to catch one.
Jager,
I think I saw a wedding band in one of your pics. Does she have a sister? lol. For a married guy you sure get your fishing time in! :) Good job, you sure have this stuff down!
Now feeling rather silly for dragging arse on getting those permits Mike! I think I better get that done! Nice work!
Looks like it Mike nice work!
Wicked nice brown, Mike! You are having quite the spring!
BIGJim223
Nice one Mike!
Man its got to be fun being dialed in all the time. Do you fish for anything else Mike or is it just salmonoids for the most part?
Hey guys. Went to Cannonsville after work tonight for a few hours of shoreline fishing. Landed a nice fat Brown about 21". It had a blue zip tie through it's dorsel fin. A regular Home Depot zip tie....Not a DEC or NYC tag of any sort. Any thoughts? I turned him free and left it there as it did not seam to be hindering the fish
amazing fish. May I ask what your caught them on, at what depth and at what time of day? I am wondering if similar tactics would work on the Ashokan where I will be fishing this Saturday weather permitting.
Nice work Mike!
some great photos and real NICE fish thanks for sharing

Thanks Jon! Going to switch gears now and do some jigging and yanking LC for Lakers for a few weeks then take a break! Archery season is coming! :D

Hey guys,
I posted these questions on its own thread and was encouraged to repost here....
New member here and first time poster. I have seen some posts on here (1 in particular) in regards to brown trout in several of the NYC water supply reservoirs. I grew up hunting at a camp in Margaretville and spending afternoons during turkey season chasing smallies on the Pepacton. The last two years I lived in PA while attending grad school and was bit hard by the brown trout bug. However all of my trout fishing in PA was in limestone mountain streams. I just took a job in Delhi and have a lot of interest in trying to figure out how to get into the browns on the Pepacton or Cannonsville.
So I have some questions I was hoping some guys on here might be able to answer for me (without prying too much).
Question 1. I was told that the best fishing from shore is at ice out (which happens to be right now). According to the fishing syllabus "Trout season" is from April 1 to sometime in October I believe. This information is also accompanied with legal lengths and limits for keeping trout. Does this mean that trout can only be kept April 1 through October whatever? Meaning that catch and release fishing is permitted year round?
Question 2. Are the browns generally in localized pockets, or can they be found all throughout the reservoirs? I have been fishing the Pepacton (near where rt 30 crosses) for 15 plus years now and do very well with the smallies (occasional large mouth, perch, pickerel) but have never caught a single brown. Now I know I haven't been fishing over deep water targeting browns etc, however I have spent a lot of time chasing pre spawn smallies with jerk baits (my go to for stream browns in PA). I would think that if there were browns there I would have accidentally caught one in all those years? Which leads to my next/final question...
Question 3. What are the most common and successful techniques (both from shore and boat)? I'm not trying to get any secrets out of anyone, but just looking for general techniques, colors, speed, depths. Any info you guys are willing to give up would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any info!
Ben
Got a mount back of a nice male I caught last April on The Roundout. April 1st can't come fast enough! :D

Thanks Chez, appreciate the kind words!
Of the two reservoirs you're considering, I would choose Roundout but I'm partial to the lakers! Love jigging for them and RO is loaded!! I have a boat on Pepacton (Downsville) which as you know, is a brown factory!! It's a blast trolling for them there! This year I'll be putting a boat on Neversink. It too has a good reputation for big Browns and I understand it also has LLS! Good luck and wishing you a successful season on the Ressies! Only 11 more days! ;D
thank you buddy.
that Brown you got mounted.
out of the roundout.how big was he???
You get it flatlinning or trolling?
MK
Actually, if I'm not mistaken, I believe Cannonsville is the one DEP reservoir that permits the use of electric troll motors but it's a tedious process. All others, as Dom stated, are row only! I hope it stays that way too!
MK
.
ITS hard enough getting the gear to and from them ,never mind a Marine Battery.
Chez, I have caught many large browns and lakers on anchor in New Jersey. I fish my bait at different depths. When the wind kicks up there is nothing else you can do. Put your rods in rod holders around the boat and wait. Lou
Nice job Mike!
great photos nice fish thanks for sharing

Tremendous! That second fish is very healthy.
Thanks guys! Yes, all Browns despite the LLS appearance on some. I think there are two different variations of the Browns in Pepacton, pretty common in fact! Nonetheless, pretty looking fish with the minimal spotting! 😃
MK
I never gave that any consideration until you just brought it up! Will look through my old pics! Wonder why?
MK
some great LOOKING fish, nice photos, thanks for sharing

The ones with very few spots like a LLS look like they are of the "Loch Leven" strain.--- E.C.O. told me the biggest difference between a brown and a L.L.S some TIMES is the fine

this caught my eye...
"brown trout are closely related to atlantic and landlocked varieties"
Tax, is there a diffrence between landlocked and atlantics?
Sorry for hijackin thread.
Any of you reservoir guys fish them in the fall for browns? I know pre spawn (mid-late Oct.) in the central pa streams I used to fish was the best time of year for me... but I've also learned that these lake browns are a totally different animal.
Yeah those fall browns are really cool when they are at maximum spawning colors with the big hook jaws! I have noticed at some point they can get just as hard to catch as kings in full spawning mode. Have you noticed that?
There he is! ;D
Nice fish as always ! :thumbup_smilie:
Nice start to the season Mike...
Congratulations....... :thumbup_smilie:
Nice Chunker this morning! Been a while since I’ve fished the local reservoirs! This one felt good! 😃

I'm surprised his kype is so small in relation to his size.
I do/renew it on line and fish the shoreline with a flyrod when the trout streams are high and muddy.catch, trout and bass; it's the walk down the slopes that's a bit troublesome. Good luck
Back at it Mike, nice work!
Must be some exceptions as my older browns in my pond seem to keep their kypes year around once they reach a certain age.
I said ........ "as he ages he may even keep it all year" most kypes however are no where as pronounced as when the fish are in the spawn .... conclusion remains the same ,that's a nice fish jager you at wrights or the one of the others
