I always enjoy this thread. Here in indiana most people consider them trash fish. I don't know anyone who specifically targets them. Not sure why though as they are much better eating than blues or channels.

You got that right Tve   I'm waiting for the first night this coming week with no wind.  May pickup a few crawlers in the mean time as I like to have a couple different baits to offer them
Most folks don't think of this but you cut a medium sized shrimp into 3 or more pieces and they are 1/4  the price of buying crawlers and much easier to keep. Plus the extras are pretty good fried

Time to spread the word there Fishinator   They are some good eats as long as they are caught in clean fresh water.   Catch them in a stagnant beaver pond and they taste like the pond

Think I’ll just eat the shrimp. I’ve got a tub full of crawlers to feed the bullhead. They’ll last till the really warm weather.

The pond I fish is part of a creek system. This time of year there’s really good flow through it and they taste great. I got a couple the other day just experimenting for an hour or so. Water is still cold, it’s pretty windy with high pressure and a full moon. A perfect storm of bad fishing conditions. No sense trying today.

Water an area on your lawn, drive 2 pieces of rebar into lawn, attach battery charger on low to rebar. Wait 1/2 hour, shut off charger. Go pick up the crawlers.

In the spring, with cold fresh water, and properly cared for, bullies cannot be beat for table fare.

I love them the next day cold on rye bread with ketchup.  Awesome sandwich!!

Passed again today. Barometer at 30.60, blue bird skies, NW wind, 23* when I went out for my walk this morning.. didn’t break 40 till after noon.

The weather is just against me at the moment…..but…..at least I know it.

Time is on my side.

My favorite hole was found one night while we were shooting carp. Could not believe what I was seeing. Just wish this cursed wind would stop.  Installed new LED tail lights on the trailer today. No more messing with light bulbs and rotten sockets at 1:00am  Never   Got my fingers crossed for this week

Pulled my hair out over a ground issue this morning. Turns out the tongue and main frame of the trailer are two separate units bolted together. Apparently rust between them formed disrupting the ground to the  back. A couple of self tapping screws and 10" of wire and we jumped the bad area.

Happens all the time on snowmobile trailers Jerry.
So long time ago I started run a separate ground wire to every light on all my trailers.
No problems since.

Got-em   Last night was possibly one of the nicest nights that I have been on the water.  No wind, no rain, no bugs, no moon, only me and a few whisker fish that obligingly took  the hook line and sinker. It was a great way to start the season. I went prepared with several baits and as before, the cut up raw shrimp out fished the night crawlers and liver as well, 3 to 1. When you buy a bag of 30 shrimp for $7 and cut them into 3 pieces giving you 90 baits that ends up being less that $1 a dozen for the best bullhead bait around. Don't think I'll be messing with worms any more. The shrimp is also tough on the hook allowing you to catch more than 1 on a bait.
Get out there guys  It's time !

In New Hampshire our regulation on White and Yellow Perch, Crappie, Sunfish, Bluegill and Horned Pout (Bullheads) has a daily limit of 25 for each species with a total of all species listed of 50 per day.

The reason for the limit is to help reduce catching the listed fish and selling them out of state.

well bullheads are  being looked at as the next on the list  to  protect and  build a better  fishery  soon we will all be catching super duper gaint lakers that we all toss back in cause they taste aweful but they will be trophy bullheads.....another thing to think about they already ended spearing bullheads and  ended trot lining them ...........the states new motto talapia  it's whats for dinner

If you are going to smoke carp cut it into steaks. Brine it for a couple hours. Rinse lightly. Smoke at 250* until flaky but still firm. That will get rid of a lot of blood and fat. Good luck.

As with all the fish I smoke I brined in kosher salt and brown sugar over night 225 for 1.5 hours and I have to say it's pretty good softer than trout or bass I will definitely do it again

Friends of mine from Poland tell me that in Poland , carp is one of the many traditional Christmas meals.  They still own a house there and travel back and forth. I’m not sure if it is just a local tradition in their town or a Polish tradition.
I wonder if it tastes any better in Europe?

My friend caught A really good American eel once when we were spring perch fishing. He sent A picture to his wife, and she was we devastated to find out we released it. She had everything ready to smoke that thing, eel are good  eats. We used to get them in Scribe creek all the time. Nothing screws up A Zebco 33 like an eel spinning like A bass turd on the end of your line. I imagine with the lampricide they use that most of the eels are gone now, also the dams don't help either. Eels are just yummy when done well, also most of the eel you get from sushi bars is smoked catfish, got that one from A sushi bar owner in Plattsburgh. Real eel would be so expensive that they just couldn't sell it. Anyone ever smoke bullheads, I imagine they are more robust and could take the smoke well.

As a kid I caught lots of eels in Lake Ontario from shore while bullhead fishing.  We tried just once to eat one.  Dispatched it, nailed it to a telephone pole and cleaned it.  We cut it up and me and a brother pan fried it.  It was so nasty, like eating sticks of butter.  We threw it out.  I'm not sure if the lampricide has caused the decline in eel numbers but there is no doubt their numbers have crashed in Lake Ontario.  I don't think they spawn in freshwater streams and rivers, at least that is what I think I have read.

At a lodge way up in Ontario that I frequent they do a weekly fish fry for the group.
Part of the fun is a little taste test the owner does.
He fries up the following fish -
walleye
northern pike
Small mouth bass
lake trout
and a sucker

Now mind you, these fish all come from pretty cold water up there.
He passes around 5 numbered plates and doesn't reveal what number plate corresponds to which fish.
Every cabin has a pad and pencil and works together to guess what each plate of fish is.
It's crazy how many people get the sucker wrong.
The walleye and pike often get mistaken with each other.
But the bass, the laker, and the sucker are quite close when everything is done.
The owner is very careful to bleed each fish and get it on ice quickly.
He also trims all belly meat and lateral lines out to get the primo meat for this taste test.
It's a lot of fun.
It also opens up a lot of fishermen's eyes.

That sounds like fun Mac    I might try that on the family   I'll bet I can raise some eye brows
I went last night for my bullheads  Sorry no pics I just didn't take the time   It was a very chilly night with the boat being covered with frost by 11 pm  brrr   Good thing I wore my ice fishing suit   Got 11 nice fish plus a couple of those "tasty" carp  It was a little weird that they never really started to bite until 9 or so   Maybe the cold drove them out deeper ?

Here's another.
I think I have posted this in the past on MFF.

Anyway, 10 yrs or so ago we were at my camp on Lake Erie and I had a bunch of the local fishing buddies sitting at my campfire.
We were all laughing and have a few cold beverages while my son was frying up walleye for everyone.
No please be advised that all these guys are walleye snobs!!!
All other fish are thrown back or into the garden.  All other fish!!!!
(Jimski - you were at this  ;) )

Anyway, Jeff comes up to me quietly and says we were all out of walleye fillets.
I told him to quickly thaw out the silver bass we had in the freezer and do it on the open fire like we always did in this fish grate thingy that holds the fillets between 2 wire mesh screens while you are cooking it.
After he did this, he took the fillets and tossed them all in Franks and butter, like you do with wings, etc.
We served them with ranch dressing instead of blue cheese because the ranch is runnier and doesn't ear apart the piece of fish as easy as blue cheese dressing does.
These guys ate these silver bass like they were starving ravenous dogs.  lol
Afterwards, I told them all they ate silver bass.
That Jeff had run out of walleye long ago.
To this day, some of those guys still don't believe me that they ate silvers.

Moral of the story -

I can turn walleye fillets into fishy strong-tasting food simply by not processing it properly.
However, I can turn typically stronger tasting fillets into something edible by taking some extra time in the up front prep.
Bleed your catch immediately and get it on ice is probably the single most important thing you can do to get nice tasting fillets.
Trim the belly fat and lateral line, where the fats and oils reside.

Have fun.

I’m happy with a cooler full of bullhead.

2 hours from 1:00-3:00 this afternoon. Night crawlers. Only took 16 crawlers….caught 20 fish.. Good thing I didn’t take more bait. I’d still be there I guess.

I’ll fillet some and leave some on the bone. Not much I like more than bullhead fillets blackened on the Weber. Pan fried is great too….just not too often.

It’s a pond that’s part of a local creek system. Only 3-4’ deep. Been fishing it for 20 years. Experience told me right  now is prime time. And, I happened to have the day off from the golf course.

Win….win!

A guy perch fishing near us last weekend caught a few GIANT bullheads. They looked like channel cats their heads were so big.

I haven't targeted bullheads in a long time, but we usually hook a couple while perch fishing shallow.

I picked up a bunch of fresh water clams this morning. Thought I would try them for bullheads this week since it's going to cool down. I'll try any thing once.

Pretty warm waters for bullhead

My favorite fly testing spot is in the midst of the annual cottonwood plague. Took the fly fishing gear out of the trunk and got a catfish rod ready. Love catching catfish……and…….releasing them. Gotta remember to bring the net ;)

I guess I'm throwing in the towel for now. Water is warm, weeds are too thick, bugs are horrible at night with the lights. I usually put in a couple nights in October. I'll save the clams till then in the freezer .
