Over the past few days, my neck of the woods has received the first half-way decent rains that we've had in quite some time, so I had high hopes that they would reboot the local fishing action and push it into overdrive.
But that does not appear to have happened.
Tonight, I got out after dinner on the upper end of my "milk run" along the South Hoosic in Adams, from 6:30 to 7:30 PM.
The weather was mostly sunny and 73 degrees, and the stream level seemed to be modestly higher than the last time I was out, albeit not as much as I expected.
The last time I got out not quite a week ago (at the height of our semi-drought conditions), I was fortunate enough to catch five rainbows along the same stretch in roughly the same period of time, but tonight I was only able to catch two.
On the other hand, I was able to make up in size for the decline in numbers.
The last several times that I've been out, the trout that I have caught have topped out at 15 inches, but tonight my larger one measured 16".

I typically will do well when the water is rising during the rain events and then will do well a day or two after when its dropping. Id like to get up there in late september/early october to fish pre-spawn wild browns. They will be aggressive and all of those pockets we fished will be prime for some jig streamer action. For you it might be fun to put down the worm segments in favor of a rapala.

Thanks for the tip - - I think I'll give it (a lure) a try for a little variety.
If nothing else, I expect the trout will hit harder that way, even if I don't catch more of them.
I agree that the optimal time for you to visit would be late September/early October.
Hopefully, by then, the stream levels will have returned to normal and the fishing will have picked up again - - and (knock on wood) the browns in particular should be more active.
