Finally got out fishing for the open water 2012 season.
Sunday, May 6th 2012
fish'n time : 8:30pm - Midnight
Hudson River, NY (C&R only section of the river)

Now normally the river bank rule is that if you want your picture taken with a catfish, it must be over 24".
But, this one is 23" and my buddy caught one too, so I wanted to show off a double for the night.

And not to long later I land this nice 8 pounder.

Now the big full moon came up and the fishing was hot as the moon was peeking out and started to raise. We were thinking that it would turn them off, but as the moon was coming up it got hot but it (the moon) did finally turn them off for about an hour and then we finally picked up a few more before heading home about midnight.

I did manage to catch one real nice 10 pounder.

For fish'n from 8:30pm - midnight my buddy and I caught and released some fun catfish.
Buddy: 15 cats + 2 eels
Me:  16 cats + 1 eel
A great way to start off the open water fishing season!!!!

Day 1 (05-26-12) of 2 from our Memorial Weekend up at camp

Start out with a nice multi double

And a nice smallie with Lady hanging out

My son with a nice perch

And now my son acting funny, "Dad, take a funny picture of me."

Then it was back to camp for supper and into town for some ice cream, hang out watch a little Empire Strikes Back and then it was time to put my son and wife to bed. Hop into the truck, launch the boat again about 10pm and go out fishing. The fish'n really turned on about midnight till about 1am and about 1:30a I was back at the launch and in bed by 2am.

1st jitterbug bass of the season.

Then at midnight I pull up on this rocky point and start throwing a shallow crankbait and this 21 1/2" walleye shows up.

After cranking the whole point, changed back to the jitterbug and ended up with this nice 17" smallie.

What a great way to start off the Memorial weekend.

Day 2 (05-27-12) of 2 from our Memorial Weekend up at camp

After I got up and made breakfast for the family, my son asked to take the kayak out to fish infront of camp while mom and I made lunches to get ready for the boat. My son caught 4-6 smallies and had trouble unhooking this one so he paddled back to camp for dad to help unhook.

I'm very proud of my son fishing and kayaking on his own.

So we got the boat ready and hit the perch hole.

But found some smallies too.

Ya know I can't pass up a nice double.

And finally my son hooks into a pickeral.

And perch hole just wasn't producing the 2nd day so I move over to another spot that I was hoping for some smallies on beds and low and behold, BINGO.

My son was catching them left and right, I really wasn't able to get many throws in, lol.

It was super cool to watch this monster smallie come flying off the bed to attack my son's grub right next to the boat.

An awesome 17" smallie

And the release

My son's 17"er just makes my 16"er look like a minnow, lol.

As you can see we had a great Memorial day weekend up at camp.

Smallies on light tackle.......

While, I desided to hit the river Monday due to winds again. I fished the lake last week with the winds and it was nutz with 2-3 foot rollers and whitecaps. I wasn't into that again this week. The wind was blowing again so I'd try the river. With the winds, it was blowing me up current on the river but still easier fish'n then whitecaps out on the lake.

After the first hour of nothing, I moved over to the other side of the river and finally started to catch fish.

and 5 minutes later .....

I was fish'n with my light action rod, 6# mono, 1/8oz leadhead, 3" slider/paddletail grub and lost control of 2 big smallies so I changed up to my med. action rod with 10# and caught smallest bass of the day. A whopper at 6"-8" and not really being able to feel what was going on with my jig, I changed back up to my lighter tackle rod. I just truely love my BigDadyRod and not too long after that I hook into a real whopper, lol.

Fish'n solo in the wind it crazy sometime. I hook into a real night smallie that headed to the deep water. So I drop anchor and while I'm trying to keep a tight line and feed the anchor line out, I battle this smallie from going into the anchor rope. She dived under the boat and jumps out of the water on the other side of the boat. I fight her to gain control, walking to the back of the boat to get away from the front anchor rope, battle with her under the boat and hoping to keep her out of the motor now. Finally clear of the motor and fish back on the same side of the boat as I. Grab the net and try to 1 handed net fish and after 3 trys, finally in the net and time to share my battle and prize.

close up and notice that I was tight to the bank too.

guess I wasn't totally solo, just haven't caught my dog to net fish yet.

After all that, I turn to look up river and here come a huge house boat heading west toward the Great Lakes.

It was a great few hours of fish'n, I totally love smallies on light tackle, it's one hell of a battle on light tackle and gives the fish an under hand.

Till next time .....
