Be on the lookout.
My family just had our first fiddleheads of the season for dinner last night. That's the earliest I can ever recall being able to harvest any.
My two oldest also spotted some ramps just beginning to sprout during a hike earlier in the week.
-
We’ve been getting ramps from ashfield area for a couple weeks now.
Interestingly my friend has been transplanting ramps for a few years now with pretty good results. Patches now coming up in most of her friends yards that have the right conditions.
This is exciting because a lot of wild patches in the area are getting cleaned out from over harvesting.

fiddleheads are gone where I go for them. they are ferns now.

In other non-fishing nature news:
A developmentally disabled robin perched in a bush just outside my house keeps flying into the bay window in front - - evidently because he (or she?) sees its reflection and thinks it's another robin.
Some really cool looking small birds with blue backs were flying around and skimming the surface of Fish Pond as I prowled the shore and tried to find some fish to cast to.
I think they were swallows and that they were looking for bugs, but I honestly don't know what they expected to find - - the thermometer in my car said 50 degrees, but I've had warmer days ice fishing, so I cannot imagine there would be too many bugs for them to catch.
-
I typically see birds doing that on the river during a hatch.
-
I've read swallows actually take drinks of water off the surface. Could they be doing that?
BTW for the ignorant here in the midwest: What a "ramp?" By the title I thought I was going to be reading about boat ramps.

Ramps are like wild green onions/scallions. They are little like garlic.

Ditto, actually found a small patch along the westfield and it looks like I was a few weeks too late.

And when life gives you ramps, you cut that ship up and make ramp sausage.

Sharps - - What do you use for the meat for the sausage? Beef? Pork? Other?
Looks yummy!

Pork. Sometimes venison as well depending on what I make.

Close contender to being my favorite sausage I make. All credit to you with the ramps pal.

In our area the ramps are usually ready around mothers day, and were right on schedule this year. Did a potato chowder and a leek quiche with them this year. Delicious indeed!
