thanks gents...hopefully we can get into some more fish this coming 4th of July weekend!!!!!

And if not, we have a huge family get together river trip planned for late July down south on the Shenandoah River outside of Luray, VA. It's going to be one hell of a family and friends week on the riverbank.   8)

nothing real big, lots of river perch and smallies and a few channel cats, bummer no carp, wife really wanted to tangle with a carp this year, but plenty of little ones to keep the interest. Pictures are off the camera and sitting on the computer, just no time right now to go thru them. Hope to get to come vacation pictures here in the next few weeks.  ;D

Ok, on vacation this year we went back to my childhood river bank to camp out for a whole week with family and friends.
July 19 - 27, 2013 @ the Ruffner's Campground on the Shenandoah River just north from Luray, VA.
Had a high school friend come spend a night with us on the river back from outside of DC.
The fish'n was hard with 100% artificial, but got a few on the lite jigheads and 2" twisters, plus the river was about 1 foot higher then normal.

Once my father got there on Sunday we were able to seine for hellgrammites then it was fish on!

Was able to get enough for a few days, but we had to seine a 2nd time mid week so we could get back into them Thursday and Friday.

It was great to have my wife in front of the canoe catching tons of fish.
In the background is camp up on the bank and everyone getting ready to go out fish'n and catch'n some nice fish of the big rock (left side), also a great swimming hole.

Back out in the canoe with wife and son catch'n up a storm of fish, hellgrammites are the #1 bait when it comes to catch'n fish on the river. Everything eats them and it's like dangling a chunk of meat into front of a tiger.

One day we packed up the canoe and kayak and headed up river for a nice family fish'n and float down the river.

Later on that evening back at camp, wife got a nice cat.

Even saw one day a family of deer walking up the bank on the other side of the river.

What camping trip won't be complete without many a night of poker.

More to come, Stay tuned for part 2.

thanks guys!!

Here is part 2 and the last of our Shenandoah River, Luray, VA trip....

With the last day to fish, I was able to get my wife out for a quiet afternoon to hunt down a big carp for her. Unfortunetly we went able to get her hooked up with any, but we saw a few, just couldn't get them to hit. With a few dozen hellgramites we had a great day of fishing. First we had to put a few gills on the stringer to cut up for some catfish bait. So we floated down the river, anchoring and fishing as we went, bouncing from hole to hole, catching tons of fish, this is how it went.

A few gills for the stringer.

We let the chubs go, lol, these river catfish will eat gills first, then chubs and smallies last, lol, just seems to be the way it is.  ;D

So we headed down just below that log jam, anchored up in the shade and had several carp feeding and swimming around. Just couldn't get them to eat our hellgramites, the gills and chubs just rushed right in there. I cut up a gill and baited up a rod for each of us to toss out and lay in the canoe with loosened drags and one foot on the butt of the rods in the canoe so we won't loose them if our baits were hit and run if a need for speed catfish, lol. The other rod in hand we kept throwing our hellgramites looking for anything to bite and were catching fish left and right.
After several runs, I was finally able to hook up with a nice catfish and with a great netting job from my wife, was able to boat it for photo.

With our last day coming to a close, I walked around camp and took some camp photos.

What a great chair with a view.

With our last night around the camp fire, we had an awesome beer batter cucumber and walleye treat.

Now isn't it just awesome to spend a week on the river bank and by the camp fire every night, what some great weather we had.

Now, to end this wonderful trip with some magical fire flames...

Till next year, Fish on!

What did you use to create the color in the campfire
