Goodbye my Friend.
« on: May 28, 2007, 07:46 PM »
My old dog was feeling poorly for a few day, so on Sat. {May 26th} I took him to the vet.
She said there was no hope for him and that he may be suffering, so, with a very heavy heart, I made the decision to have him put to sleep.
That's one of the toughest things I have ever had to do.

He was a lab / border collie cross and he went everywhere with me.  We shared many hunting and fishing adventures. He was skilled at waterfowl and upland game bird retrieval plus, he even jumped in and retrieved  a few fish for me on occasion. He also worked well with handling cattle and pulling a sleigh.
Rocky was 17 years old, and he has been with me most of my life.

I though I would share a few photos of him.

This is a photo of Rocky on his last day.

Here are some happy memories.

Rocky and his pup.

Thanks for the memories old friend.

They have so much to teach us if we are willing to listen.

They are not with us for very long but the time they are is very special.

There is a poem called "The Rainbow Bridge".
If any of you have not read it you should, it is sad but nice.

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Very sorry for your loss man. I've been through it a bunch of times myyself and it never gets any easier. My condolences. Here's another pretty cool piece that was sent to me after I had one of mine put down.

Message To My Master

The day you laid me down to sleep
you prayed to the Lord; my soul to keep
I know you had to send me on my way
but you sent me to a new; better; and much brighter day

You sent me home; to heaven above
where I'm cradled in God's arms; covered with His love
I understand what you did; you did out of love
and I'll return that love; from my new home above

My sickness is gone; and I'm free here to roam
I run and play in the meadows; here in my new home
We play here by the Bridge; from morning to night
there is no rain here; just warm sunlight

I know you all miss me; I miss you all too
but I'll always be with you; whatever you do
Please wipe the tears; from your weeping eyes
by remembering the good times; from days gone by

When you look out; into the dark of night
I'll be that bright star; your guiding light
We'll meet again at the Bridge one day
when we'll walk in the light; together to stay

very sorry for your loss.

I've always felt that, as hard as it is, a pet that has lived its life with diginty and compassion should have it end the same way.

The great part is they live on in our hearts and minds forever.

Thanks JimP,kappy,pikemaster,walleye1, fshnfool and JDK for you kind words.

Rocky was defiantly a member of the family, all my pets are. :)

That is nice poem walleye1, thanks.

Kappy,It's neat that you had a Rocky also.
I named him Rocky because of the fighter Rocky Balboa.
When he was a pup his mom stepped on his face and sliced the bridge of his nose leaving him a scar all his life, kind like the scars Rocky had, and then when he was older he lost a permanent tooth thus adding even more to his Rocky look. ;D

First post ever to make me cry :'(, God bless Rocky and the lives he has touched along the way.  Don't tell my wife or yours, but somehow I think an outdoorsman may actually mourn the loss of a good dog more than anything else.  I hope Rocky is up there in dog-heaven playing with an old german short-hair named Shaman..........
