Those alarm putts are the signal you have been made. Its shot or not to shot at that point.

GOOD JOB!!!
I hate that sound usually means your screwed!!!
I like the sound of a guns action ejecting a bullet, its like a job well done!

PS if you have not got one yet don't worry, I have shot a majority of my birds after mothers days till memorial, JUST BRING BUG SPRAY!!! and keep moving cause the leaves make it harder to hear em!

One last note if you blow the deal on a tom early in the day try em later before noon, closed the deal on birds guys have screwed up on before and find it awesome to close their or my deal!

My second turkey was gobbling up a bit earlier than I expected. Sherry and I were camping out Saturday night, (Brrrr !!!) in Southern Albany County and heard the darn turkey go off early so I footed up the path for a few hundred yards to get where they like to come down.
Set up, sat down, got all the ducks in a row, set up the tripod and the camcorder, and waited. The dickins was gobbling his way in to me in good order, and I could even hear other Tom's all around the valley, when all of a sudden I hear an owl hooting. A barred owl to be exact, and not a very good imitation of one I must add, about 1/2 a mile away and loud, followed by an imitation crow call, (the danger signal no less), then a poorer still effort on a call box.Every turkey in the valley shut up and did not utter another anything all day long.
I wandered up my creek to check on storm damage and saw something glittering in the sunlight up on a side hill and went to check. I found cigarette butts, a soda can, and a trail bar wrapper, about where I'd heard all the bad sounds earlier. It seems some darned ol' flat land furriners ended up on my land 'cause I have better turkeys or something.
Jeez it all. Not enough to trespass and screw up my turkey hunt, but to leave TRASH behind, out in the open even. I was upset to say the least. Sherry and I are on our way back down there today for another two day campout, and I'm going to make it a point to don my ugly suit and hand deliver their trash back them.
Just another day in the woods I guess. At least nobody got shot. Back to the stripers, and I aint even ready for the contest yet. Tight lines and safe waters to y'all. See some of you on the 13th in Troy. Good Luck.

All other hunters I've shown my video to agree that the turkey sound we hear just a few seconds before I shot was the alert 'Putt'. Experts and specialist also call it the alert, or warning 'Putt', that sends them all quietly on their way 'till tomorrow. I know what they mean but no one can explain why it's called a "Putt".
In fact, I find it bloody impossible for a turkey to do, and I can prove it right now. Say 'Putt". Now say it again while looking in the mirror. Go ahead, say 'Putt' and watch yourself form the word and say it aloud, 'Putt'.
You had to touch your lips together to make the 'Putt' sound didn't you? Turkeys don't have lips, at least on the end that makes the sounds I'm most interested in. That's probably why they're so expensive eh?

Great stories, Chainsaw!  :)

I'm heading back down to Catt county this afternoon for another crack at those birds tomorrow with Butterworm. He is a guide par excellence.
Oh yeah- He's a pretty good caller, too.  ;)

Took a real nice bird yesterday morning (turkey no 2) 22lbs ,10" beard and 1 1/4 spurs.  I'm kindof embarrasses to say I tried the long poke after battling with this bugger for several hours but he dropped where he stood, 55 paces. i guess that turkey choke with 2 ozs of 4x6's will reach farther than I thought.  anyway I'll try to post a pic later if i get some time.  now on to the important stuff   Walleyes!

I don't know about that. They are a real nuisance here.... The DNR just won't step up and admit it

How many birds can you take in that 5-day season, PG?
I didn't mean to sound condescending, but you'd think that your DNR would recognize the potential management benefits from a longer season.

Chain saw, them birds make all kinds of sounds that you think they could not make. Most birds would never win a calling contest. For me its tone and rhythm. Different slates and strikers for different sounds. The long distance slate I use is a aluminum quaker that rips and travels thru the woods even after the foliage had come out.
Alarm putts are reactions to something and the birds are scared of!
Have you ever heard a roll putt? I think thats whats it called, closed the deal on a bird that was spooked earlier in the day and he came in after gobbling three times.
In full display and roll putting and displaying together.
IT WAS AWESOME and never seen it on a video or in person since.
Experts know calls but sometimes wild birds sound so bad and their calls are hard to decipher.

PS get the back tag number of those guys, find out how they are getting on your land and block their entrance. Or at least park a spare car there and make em think your accessing and hunting that area. HOPEFULLY THEY WILL THINK TWICE!

Do guys in NY no longer hunt turks? figured there would be more responce to this?

Pikeguy that is a shame, our flocks were decimated years ago and they have come back strong. Some areas have a two bird fall season. Hope things will change that is a short season.

I tom per season in the spring. I hear there is a fall season where you can take 1 tom and 1 hen.

Buckski. Turkeys can indeed make noises you wouldn't expect. I was kidding about them not being able to make the 'Puttt' sound. My Harley 'Putts' around all day long and it don't have lips either. I have on video tape, a 'Roll Putting' turkey almost running me down as me partner Frog was calling about 40 feet behind me.
As for the TRASHPASSERS on my land...!!! I gathered the trash and took it with me when I introduced my new neighbors to their crazy Biker neighbor. The cars had Jersey plates and the husband/wife team wasted no time in calling a young man to the door who was smoking the same brand as found. They gave him a good "What for".
My land is not posted on the back side and all he had to do was walk out back and cross the stone wall. Now they know the boundries and the rules. I gave the young man permission and a place to hunt West of the creek and North of where he'd posted himelf. He can hunt alone on weekends only after calling my property manager the night before so as to alert others of another loaded gun on the property. His military history had a lot to do with my decision and I don't think there'll be any more problems.
Many of the folks who hunt my land are law enforcement officers and he now knows that anyone he may see in the woods could be a cop. My mission in life is to make good neighbors out of bad neighbors or shoo them out of the neighborhood.
I am now in posession of five turkey egg shells hatched out a few days ago, indicating a young hen, and the turks here in Carlisle, Schoharie county, are only gobbling on the roosts and not answering any calls. I'll just work a little harder 'till we get our bag limits.

Now most of you guys reading this will probably say I'm full of Sh!t and not believe the following, but what you're about to read is the honest to gods truth!!

A fellow electrician buddy of mine that I hunt with Bagged a 32 lb. 4 oz. bird last week in Chaut. County.
Won't give the specifics as to where but it was in the town of Ellery.
12 inch beard with amazing 1 7/8 spurrs.
DEC came, officially weighed it and kept the bird, for the books they called the spurrs 2 inches.
 Brand new NYS record bird!!!

Cabela's is making him some kind or cash offer to purchase the bird for their collection. N ot sure how much yet.

JD
I'll take a bad day of fishing over a good day of work anytime!
